Are you looking for the best things to do in Chelmsford? Lucky for you, we know all the fun things to do as itās our home, or at least it was before we decided to move into our van conversion!
We lived in Chelmsford for years, on and off, and I even went to University in the city. It’s a lovely place to visit for a weekend break outside the city since it has excellent transport links from London.
The inner city is small and can be seen in a day, but there are plenty of nature hikes, country parks, games and museums to fill your days; thereās also a small cathedral. Since there is a lot to do outside the city centre, Iād say make the most of your trip to Chelmsford and plan for a weekend getaway!
Since This Was Our Home, We Know All The Amazing Things To Do In Chelmsford, And Now So Will You!
In this post, we will tell you all about the fun things to do in Chelmsford. Iāll also cover topics including why Chelmsford is famous, where to stay, and our favourite nature trails, and explain why Chelmsford is worth visiting.

Why Is Cheslmford Worth Visiting?
Would you believe that it was Chelmsford that Jack and I met? Well, for the second time around since we knew each other from school. We were living there and just happened to bump (or re-bump) into each other while out and about in the town centre.
So, of course, we think Chelsmford is worth visiting. Itās a great little city surrounded by countryside, which has a relaxed vibe and is close to many beautiful outdoor places to visit in Essex.
The town centre is a fun place to be on the weekends, but even during the week, there are tons of activities to keep you busy. On Tuesday and Friday, youāll even find a fresh fruit and veg market along the High Street!
In summer, the local parks, which are so easily accessed from the centre, come alive with colourful flowers, picnics and many outdoor events; think foodie markets, live music and festivals.
Wander outside of the town centre, and there are numerous outdoor places to visit. You can opt for peaceful walks along the rivers or take a trip to the famous Hylands House Estate; you can even visit the stunning RHS Hyde Hall Gardens!
ā Who Will Love Chelmsford? If youāre looking for a country escape where you can be absorbed by nature while still being nice and close to London with a high street big enough to grab a decent meal and do a spot of shopping, then Chelmsford is somewhere youāre going to enjoy.
25 Best Things To Do In Chelmsford
Thereās quite a lot to do in Chelmsford, so Iāll just go over the top 25 best things to do. Iāve tried to include a variety of activities to suit all ages and budgets. Some of these activities are also free (which we love), while others are only open on certain days – so be sure to plan your trip accordingly!
Iāll start with the best activities to do in or close to Chelmsfordās city centre and then those outside the city followed by locations which might require a half or full-day trip.
Things To Do In Chelmsford: City Centre
1. Enjoy The Chelmsford Markets & Shopping
There are two main markets in Chelmsford. You have the High Street market which runs every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, and The Chelmsford Market open Tuesday to Saturday.
Youāll find a variety of shops and stalls at both markets. If you visit on a day they are both open youāll get the best experience of a bustling market town. The markets offer items such as fresh produce, clothing, crafts, eateries and much more.
In addition, you can also explore the High Chelmer Shopping Centre, where you’ll find popular high-street shops. There is another shopping centre called Meadows which has a handful of useful shops but ultimately, itās not a great shopping experience.

2. Visit Chelmsford Cathedral & Shire Hall
Chelmsford Cathedral is a stunning but modest building (unlike the more famous Lincoln Cathedral) with a rich history dating back over 800 years. It’s a great place to admire the architecture, learn about its religious significance, and attend one of the many events held throughout the year.
Shire Hall is also worth passing by (it’s closed currently) and sometimes has open days. Itās a Grade II listed Georgian building which sits grandly at the top of the High Street, it’s nice just to admire and take a photo if nothing more.
The good thing about both these buildings is that they are very close to each other and in the centre of town. So you can visit them both before strolling down the High Street and grabbing a coffee at the cosy ACanteen along the river.

3. Visit The Museums
In all honesty, we havenāt visited the Essex Police Museum but I know itās a unique attraction, where you can learn about the history of law enforcement in the area.
The Chelmsford Museum, on the other hand, is a must-visit for those of you interested in the history of the city and its surrounding areas. You can see a range of exhibits and artefacts that showcase the local culture and heritage.

4. Chelmsford Civic Centre & Theatre
The Chelmsford Civic Centre is a modern building that houses the council offices and public library. Itās not that amazing but if youāre into books you might want to check it out.
The Chelmsford Theatre which is also located in the centre, around the back hosts a variety of performances throughout the year. Youāll need to check their timetable but performances include theatre productions, live music, and comedy shows.

5. Cuddle Up At Everyman Cinema
Have you visited an Everyman Cinema before? As Odean and other big named cinemas seem to be closing left, right and centre the popularity of the Everyman Cinema just keeps growing.
Itās a new-age cinema chain that offers a unique and luxurious movie-watching experience.
Think comfortable seating, delicious food and drinks, and a range of classic and new films on offer, it’s a great place to unwind and enjoy a night out.

6. Have Fun Boom Battle Bar
One of the newest editions to Chelmsfordās High Street is the Boom Battle Bar. The venue is a fun and lively games bar that’s becoming really popular! We only just stuck our heads in the place the other day and have since made plans to return with friends.
It looks epic! With a great selection of entertainment such as axe throwing, bowling, darts, pool and so much more, it looks to be a fun night (or day) thing to do in Chelmsford for families and friends.

7. Picnic At Central Park Or Admiral Park
Central Park and Admiral Park are two of the most popular green spaces in Chelmsford. Both offer beautiful scenery, walking paths, and plenty of open space to have a picnic or relax with friends and family.
They are easily reachable as Central Park flows into Admirals Park. Youāll find the entrance to Central Park by Chelmsford Markets, or just follow the river west.
Usually in Summer, there are numerous events held at these parks which are becoming more popular each year. Weāve been to a Beer & Cider Festival a few times and a Vegan Foodie Market/Festival but there are tons of options.

8. Chelmsford Escape Rooms & Escape Live Chelmsford
I did this in London years ago and Iām so thrilled itās now in Chelmsford! It was so fun and a real challenge, between you and me we didnāt complete it, but shhh; donāt tell anyone!
If you love a challenge, the Chelmsford Escape Rooms and Escape Live Chelmsford offer a thrilling and immersive experience. You’ll need to use your problem-solving skills and work as a team to escape the room before time runs out.
It honestly has got to be one of the most fun things to do in Chelmsford and is a superb idea for a birthday!

9. Rascal Bay Crazy Golf
Rascal Bay Crazy Golf is a fun and challenging activity that’s suitable for all ages. A few years ago it had a whole overhaul and has now re-opened with a variety of awesome holes and obstacles to overcome.
It’s a great way to spend a sunny afternoon with friends and family and since itās not to far from the centre you can plan the activity for your Chelmsford town outing.
10. Ceramics on the Hop
Interestingly, we found this little gem when we were exploring the nearby village of Writtle, which is my favourite place and somewhere Iād happily move to. Ceramics on the Hop used to be a mobile painting activity but is now a fun and creative studio that’s perfect for all ages.
You can choose from a range of ceramic items and paint them in your own style. Once you’re finished, you’ll have the opportunity to take your item home with you! (Keep in mind the item needs to be fired first which is done once a week, so you’ll need to go back to collect).

11. Writtle Sunflowers
Writtle Sunflowers is a must-visit destination for those who love nature and stunning scenery. This beautiful sunflower field is located in the village of Writtle, just a short drive from Chelmsford.
For a short period in the summer, you can stroll through the field and enjoy the beauty of the flowers up close. The field is open seasonally and usually between late July and early September.

12. Visit Pleshey Castle
Although we havenāt made it to Pleshey Castle yet, Iāve read itās a small historical site located in the village of Pleshey, just a few miles outside of Chelmsford.
The castle, which is the remains of an imposing motte and bailey castle, dates back to the 12th century and was once the home of the de Mandeville family, who were some of the most powerful and influential landowners in medieval England.
Today, youāll be able to explore the ruins of the castle and learn about its history, although this is by appointment only. The castle is open between April and September.

13. Go Crazy At Jump Street Chelmsford
Have you been to a trampoline park before? Jump Street Chelmsford is an indoor trampoline park that offers hours of fun and excitement for the whole family. There are a variety of trampolines, dodgeball courts, and foam pits to run around in and practice your backflipsā¦
Or back slams if youāre anything like me, but I tried a least! Either way, youāll find thereās something for everyone at this popular attraction, and when youāve had enough thereās an on-site cafe to grab some snacks.

14. Get Merry At The Races
For those of you who love horse racing or just want to experience the thrill of the races, Chelmsford City Racecourse is the place to be!
Located in Great Leighs, just a few miles outside of Chelmsford, the racecourse offers regular fixtures throughout the year. You can enjoy a day of racing and entertainment, with plenty of food and drink options available on-site.

15. Admire Hylands House Estate
Hylands House Estate is a stunning country house and parkland located just outside of Chelmsford. The house was built in the early 19th century and features beautiful architecture and dƩcor.
Youāll be able to take a tour of the house, explore the surrounding gardens and parkland, or enjoy a picnic on the grounds. The estate also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts and outdoor theatre performances.
Itās a wonderful place to visit if you enjoy nature as there are different areas to explore, such as ancient woodland meadows and lakes. Itās perfect for a relaxing stroll, walking your dog, taking a family picnic or watching the sunset over the parklands.

16. Stroll Around RHS Hyde Hall Gardens
RHS Hyde Hall Gardens is a beautiful garden located just outside of Chelmsford. The venue is pretty big and has its own cafe – which serves traditional home-grown goodies, a shop and a garden centre.
The gardens themselves feature a wide variety of plants and flowers, including many rare and unusual species. Itās a really beautiful place to spend the afternoon, wandering aimlessly around the unique spaces and enjoying the beauty of the natural surroundings.
The garden also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including garden shows and workshops which are useful if you want to learn more about seasonal gardening.

17. Visit The Cressing Temple Barns
Visiting The Cressing Temple Barns is still on our to-do list but Iām looking forward to a unique and fascinating visit. The historical site is located a short drive from Chelmsford and therefore makes for a great place to visit if you want to explore further afield.
The barns date back to the 13th century and were once part of a large medieval farm complex. Granted to the Knights Templar in 1137, the barns have been restored complete with a Tudor walled garden and Tiptree tea rooms.
While visiting youāll be able to explore the barns and learn about their history and significance. Like most places on this list, the site also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including farmers’ markets and craft fairs. We plan to go when the farmersā market is on!
šWebsite: The Cressing Temple Barns
18. Admire The Ingatestone Hall
Ingatestone Hall is a beautiful Tudor mansion located just outside of Chelmsford in the cute village of Ingatestone. The house was built in the 16th century and features stunning architecture and dƩcor.
Take a tour of the house and learn about its history and the families who lived there. The grounds also feature beautiful gardens and a picturesque lake to while away yout day.

19. Snap Sandford Mill Bridge And Lock
This one is really just for the photo shot. Sandford Mill Bridge and Lock is a historic location that offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The bridge is a beautiful spot for photography, and you can enjoy the scenic views of the river and the lock.
Apparently, there is the Sandford Mill Museum nearby but weāve never been to it and at the moment it states itās temporarily closed. Its website also states itās not normally open to the public and does not have regular opening times. But, they do sometimes hold special open days.
šWebsite: Sandford Mill Museum
20. Canal Cruises
For those of you who want to explore the area further, a great way is to jump on a canal cruise. Essex Waterways offer unique boat tours along the River Chelmer, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife while learning about the local history and architecture.
Although we havenāt done this at Chelmsford either, a boat tour is a great way to experience the area and see the canal and locks from a different perspective.
šWebsite: Essex Waterways
We have walked along the canal many times and visited the locks at Chelmsford, Paper Mill Lock and Heybridge Basin near Maldon. It would be lovely to take the boat trip.
š Maldon is also a lovely riverside town to visit. I’ve written a few articles if you’re interested in a visit. Check them out: the best things to do in Maldon, the best coffee shops in Maldon and the best places to eat in Maldon (we obviously love this town too)!
Things To Do In Chelmsford: Nature Trails
Although we havenāt done the last walking trail (yet) on this list, the other two we did quite regularly when we lived in the city. They are our favourite nature trails to follow in Chelmsford, and although public they donāt get too busy!
21. Walking Route: Chelmsford – Little Baddow – Paper Mill Locks
This oneās straightforward. It follows the banks of the Chelmer River east out of Chelmsford passing along the flood plains, the countryside and numerous locks and weirs. Eventually, after about 3 hours of brisk walking, youāll reach Paper Mill Locks which is the perfect place to grab lunch.
Itās not a round trip, although you can sometimes organise a canal boat to take you back along the river to Chelmsford otherwise youāll have to walk back, catch a taxi or there are a few buses in Little Baddow which go to Chelmsford.
Itās actually a beautiful walk, which is a great way to experience nature and the surrounding countryside. Just keep in mind there are no facilities until you reach Paper Mill Lock.
š Did you know? You can jump on the canal boat at Paper Mill Lock and continue to Heybridge Basin. There’s a lovely tea room and pub there but also some stunning views over the estuary. You can even take a walk along the seawall, like the one we did in Maylandsea!
22. Circular Cycle Route: Chelmsford – Writtle – Hylands House – Chelmsford
This route follows the public footpath all the way through Chelmsford, Writtle and Hylands Park before coming back to Chelmsford. Youāll start at Central Park and continue through Admirals Park.
At the end of Admirals Park continue following the public footpath signs which will direct you around the back of the Chelmsfordian Tennis Club and the the Writtle College Sports Ground before you arrive in Writtle.
Enjoy Writtle, itās one of my favourite little villages as itās full of beautiful houses and cottages. After Writtle keep walking until you reach Hylands Park and Estate. This is a great place for a picnic, sometimes it has events on.
23. Saffron Trail Stage 4: Great Waltham to Chelmer Village
The Saffron Trail Stage 4 is a 9-mile walking route that takes visitors from Great Waltham to Chelmer Village, passing through scenic countryside and charming villages along the way.
The trail is well signposted, and walkers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the River Can and River Chelmer, open fields, and hedgerows. The walk also takes visitors past historic landmarks such as Hylands House and the round tower church of St Mary with Leonard Church.
It’s a great way to explore the beauty of the area while getting some exercise and fresh air.
Things To Do In Chelmsford: Festivals
24. Creamfields South Festival
Held at Hylands Park this event has changed hands so many times. It used to be V Festival back in the day and then it was Rise Festival and now it’s Creamfields South. Itās a huge weekend festival attracting many A-list performers.

25. Hideaway Festival
New to Chelmsford, Hideaway is a brand-new family-friendly boutique festival which runs for an entire weekend. It looks to have a great lineup with some popular acts, street food stalls, a vintage fun fair, entertainment and glamping!
I think we will head to this one for the day to check it out!
