A day trip from Labuan Bajo is best if you’re short on time, don’t want to sleep on a boat, or simply want to see Komodo National Park’s main highlights in one go.
It’s the quickest and easiest option, especially if you’re flying into Flores and only have a couple of days to play with.
Pros:

From what my friend said, the scenery and seeing manta rays were the real highlights of the day.
So while it may not feel as immersive as a multi-day trip, it can still be a really good option if you want to experience Komodo National Park without committing to several days on a boat.
Pro tip: If snorkelling is a big reason you want to visit, it is worth knowing that some Komodo trips include better marine stops than others, especially if you have already done snorkelling tours in Bali.

This is the option I chose, and for me it felt like the best balance of adventure, scenery and time in the park.
Leaving from Labuan Bajo, you get longer at each stop, time to settle into life on the boat, and more of that feeling of actually being in Komodo National Park rather than just racing through it.

For me, this was the best way to visit Komodo National Park. I loved waking up on the boat, moving between islands and having enough time to actually soak it all in.
It definitely wasn’t luxury, and there were a few rough moments, but if you want the trip to feel like an adventure rather than a quick excursion, I think a 3-day boat trip is the best option.

Instead of flying to Flores and starting there, this option usually combines transport, island scenery and a multi-day sailing experience in one.
It is a popular choice if you’re already in Lombok or the Gili Islands and want to reach Komodo National Park in a more adventurous way – this option is high on my list now I’m living on Gili Meno.

It’s the most practical jumping-off point and the easiest place to compare tours, sort transport and get yourself organised before heading out onto the water.
Visit from Lombok or the Gili Islands
You can also visit Komodo National Park from Lombok or the Gili Islands, usually as part of a longer multi-day boat trip.
This option is popular with backpackers travelling west to east through Indonesia, as it combines transport and the Komodo experience in one trip.
It takes longer than flying to Labuan Bajo, but if you want the journey itself to feel like part of the adventure, this can be a really good option.
Can You Visit Komodo National Park Without a Tour?
No, not really.
In practice, most people visit Komodo National Park as part of an organised boat tour from Labuan Bajo. This is the standard way to see the park, whether you choose a day trip, a multi-day sailing trip or a private charter.
For places like Komodo Island and Rinca, you also need to go ashore with a guide or ranger, as the dragons are dangerous and the areas are protected.

What varies most is whether things like park fees, guide fees, hotel transfers, towels, and private room upgrades are included, which is why I would always compare the full breakdown rather than just the headline price.

The best time to visit Komodo National Park really depends on what kind of trip you want and how much weather risk you are willing to take.
In general, the drier months are the most popular because seas are calmer, days are sunnier and boat trips tend to run more smoothly. But that also means more people and, often, higher prices.
I visited in February, which is not usually seen as the ideal time, and while we did have some rain and missed a couple of things (like swimming with manta rays) because of the weather, the landscape was much greener and lusher than I expected, especially around Padar Island.
So if you don’t mind a bit more unpredictability, travelling outside the driest months can still be really beautiful.
It just depends on whether you would rather have the best chance of smooth sailing or a quieter, more dramatic-feeling trip.
Where to Stay Before Visiting Komodo National Park
If you’re travelling around Indonesia for longer, especially after spending time in Bali on a budget, it is worth comparing tour inclusions carefully before booking.
Most people stay in Labuan Bajo before visiting Komodo National Park, as this is where the majority of tours leave from.
If you’re doing a day trip, you will definitely want to base yourself there the night before, and even on a multi-day boat trip, it makes things much easier to arrive in Labuan Bajo first rather than trying to connect everything on the same day.
There are plenty of places to stay in Labuan Bajo, from budget hostels to mid-range hotels and more comfortable resorts.
I would choose somewhere fairly close to the harbour or town if you want things to feel easy, especially if you have an early boat departure.
Even if you do not plan to spend much time in Labuan Bajo itself, it’s still the most practical base for organising your Komodo trip.
What to Pack for a Komodo Boat Trip
Packing for a Komodo boat trip is fairly simple, but a few things will make the experience much more comfortable.
Days are hot, sunny and active, while boats can be basic depending on what you book, so it helps to pack light but sensibly.
Pro tip: If you’re doing a multi-day trip, I would pack a small overnight bag rather than a big suitcase, as space on boats can be limited. If you’re returning to the same hotel after the excursion, it’s often possible to leave your main bag in the hotel’s storage.
I’d make sure you bring:

If you’re booking a budget trip, I also think it is worth keeping your expectations realistic. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a great experience, but comfort and organisation can vary a lot from boat to boat.

For me, the best way to visit Komodo National Park was the 3-day boat trip from Flores. It gave me enough time to enjoy the journey, spend longer at each stop and actually feel like I was in the park rather than just racing through it.
That said, I can also see why a day trip works well for some people, especially if you’re short on time or do not want to sleep on a boat.
I really think the right choice comes down to what kind of trip you want.
