Is Indonesia Worth Visiting 2024? Everything You Want To Know!

With many other destinations to choose from around the world, you might be wondering if Indonesia is worth visiting.

It’s a country that we have spent a lot of time in, having lived in Bali for 6 months and travelled around a number of the other islands. Like many others, we came to appreciate the beauty of Indonesia. It captures the imagination of travellers from all over the world, but it’s also somewhere that has a bad reputation due to over-tourism and an ever-growing pollution problem. 

With this in mind, and although it has its drawbacks, I still firmly believe Indonesia is somewhere worth visiting. I wanted to share my reasons for thinking this to help you plan your next trip.

Why Is Indonesia Worth Visiting?

To be completely honest, we didn’t really do too much research into Indonesia when we decided to head to Bali, all I had on my mind was Bali, Bali, Bali! The truth is, I wish we had spent more time exploring Indonesia and less time galavanting around Bali. That’s not to say Bali isn’t worth visiting, Bali certainly is worth visiting, but so is Indonesia! 

There are multiple reasons why Indonesia is worth visiting. For one, it boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage that can be explored through its ancient temples, vibrant festivals, and traditional art forms. 

As we backpacked around Indonesia we, at times, felt completely immersed in the local culture by participating in cultural activities, enjoying unique culinary delights, and experiencing warm hospitality from the locals. We stayed in many a homestay and truly felt so welcomed by the Indonesian people.

Another reason why Indonesia is worth travelling to and probably the main reason you’re even considering a visit, is its stunning natural beauty. From dense rainforests to unbelievable beaches and soaring mountains, Indonesia’s landscapes are incredibly diverse and awe-inspiring. 

The country is also home to some of the world’s most unique and biodiverse ecosystems, such as the Komodo National Park and the tropical forests of North Sumatra.

Finally and another fantastic reason why Indonesia is worth travelling to is it’s a very affordable destination that offers a wide range of accommodation options and activities to suit the savviest of budget backpackers.

Top 15 Best Things To Do In Indonesia

Here’s a quick rundown of the top 15 things Indonesia is best known for and why it makes a destination worth visiting.

1. Island Hopping

Island hopping in Indonesia is a unique and incredible experience that you should consider if you’re heading there. With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia offers an array of diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and natural wonders. Why visit one paradise when you can visit thousands?

Of course, the world-renowned island of Bali is the most popular destination but Indonesia has other equally, if not more so, pristine locations. Each island has its own distinct charm, from the traditional villages and ancient temples to the lush jungles and active volcanoes. Some of our favourites included Nusa Lembongan and Lombok!

Island hopping in Indonesia is the perfect way to explore the beauty and diversity of the country, connect with the friendly locals, and learn different traditions which will provide you with an adventure of a lifetime.

3. Rainforest Tours

Visiting the rainforests in Indonesia is an excellent way to experience the country’s incredible biodiversity and natural beauty. Indonesia has some of the world’s largest and most diverse rainforests, including the famous Borneo and Sumatra rainforests. 

These rainforests are home to a staggering number of wildlife species, including orangutans, tigers, elephants, and various primates, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. 

As well as the diverse wildlife, you can expect to see a range of exotic plants and trees, many of which are found nowhere else in the world! The rainforests also play a crucial role in regulating the world’s climate, making them a vital ecosystem to protect. 

Indonesia’s rainforests are threatened due to deforestation to make way for, among other things, oil palm plantations causing loss of habitat. The wildlife and flora are being pushed to their limits and many species are critically endangered. 

As we drove to Bukit Lawang in Indonesia we passed through enormous oil palm plantations, it was a sobering experience. Bukit Lawang sits on the border of these plantations and the protected Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.     

By heading into the jungles you’ll be supporting local tourism and education and helping protect them from deforestation. On these treks expect to discover hidden waterfalls, see endangered animals and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of local communities. 

3. Orangutan Tours

One of the most unique and rewarding experiences that you can have in Indonesia is going on an orangutan tour. These primates are native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra and are critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. 

By taking an ethical tour, you not only get to see these incredible creatures up close, but you also support the conservation efforts of organisations that work to protect their habitats and prevent their extinction. 

These tours typically involve hiking through the jungle with a knowledgeable guide, who can help you spot wild orangutans in their natural habitat. Some tours even include opportunities to volunteer at orangutan rehabilitation centres and learn more about their behaviours and biology.

The Coral Triangle, a region encompassing parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea, is considered to be the global centre of marine biodiversity, with a higher diversity of coral, fish, and other marine species than anywhere else on Earth!

5. Komodo National Park

Visiting Komodo National Park is a must-do activity for nature lovers and adventure seekers visiting Indonesia. Located in the eastern part of the country, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the famous Komodo dragon, the largest lizard species in the world. 

The best thing about visiting Komodo is that you’ll not only get to see these ancient reptiles in their natural habitat, but you can explore the park’s stunning landscapes, including rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, (including the famous Pink Beach) and tropical dry forests.

Since Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands it makes sense that water sports are a hugely popular activity in the country with people flocking to the coast. The warm tropical climate and crystal-clear waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans make it an ideal destination for water enthusiasts.

The country’s vast coastline and abundant natural beauty offer a variety of water sports such as surfing, diving, snorkelling, and rafting. Let’s dig a little deeper into these below!

7. Surfing

Surfing in Indonesia is a must-do activity for tourists and locals alike, and for good reason. Indonesia is home to some of the best waves in the world, thanks to its unique location in the middle of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. 

The country has numerous surf spots that cater to all levels of surfers, from beginners to advanced. We really enjoyed surfing in Kuta, Lombok.

The warm waters, tropical climate, and consistent swells make Indonesia a surfer’s paradise. Not to mention, the stunning backdrops of lush greenery, volcanic mountains, and white sandy beaches add to the overall experience. 

8. Snorkelling

As mentioned earlier, Indonesia boasts an incredible diversity of marine life and some of the most stunning underwater scenery in the world, making it a top destination for snorkelling enthusiasts. 

You can expect crystal-clear waters, colourful coral reefs, and an abundance of tropical fish species very close to the surface. Indonesia’s waters offer a truly immersive experience of the marine world and in our opinion, it was some of the best snorkelling we have ever done!

Some of the top spots for snorkelling in Indonesia include the Gili Islands, Bali, Komodo National Park, and Raja Ampat. 

9. Scuba Diving

Indonesia is known as one of the world’s top destinations for scuba diving. In fact, it’s where Jack completed his PADI Open Water course. Lucky him, right? Due to the country’s location in the Coral Triangle, he couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 

With so many islands, Indonesia offers a diverse range of underwater landscapes such as coral reefs, volcanic formations, and shipwrecks, which provide habitats for an incredible variety of marine life. You’ll see everything from colourful tropical fish and sea turtles to sharks, manta rays, and even whales up close – if you’re lucky. 

Something which many people don’t realise is that many dive sites in Indonesia are relatively unexplored, making it possible for divers to discover new locations and species!

10. Volcano Treks

Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes, making it a popular destination for volcano treks. One of the most famous is Mount Bromo, located in East Java. Hiking to the summit of Mount Bromo provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the Tengger Caldera and Mount Semeru. 

Other popular volcano treks include Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Mount Batur in Bali, and Mount Ijen in East Java. Some of the treks, especially among the taller volcanoes, can be physically challenging but the scenic views make it worthwhile.

During our time in Indonesia, we climbed two volcanoes – Mount Ijen and Mount Batur – and were able to learn about Indonesia’s geological and cultural history while enjoying some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the islands!

11. Topical Beaches

Indonesia is known for having some of the best and most beautiful tropical beaches in the world, and they are a major draw for travellers.

Many of these beaches are characterised by soft white sand, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery. But, you’ll also find volcanic black sands and baby-pink beaches! Some of the most popular beaches in Indonesia include Gili Trawangan in Lombok, Pink Beach on Komodo Island, and Nunggalan Beach in Bali.

Just picture soft fluffy sand between your toes and beaches lined with coconut palms. Of course, many of Indonesia’s beached have become commercialised but you’ll still find areas of raw beauty, especially if you leave Bali. 

12. Culture & Heritage

Indonesia is a country with a rich and diverse culture, making it an ideal destination if you’re interested in history and heritage. The country has over a whopping 300 ethnic groups and speaks more than 700 languages! This results in a fascinating cultural tapestry that includes traditional dances, music, handicrafts, and festivals. 

You’ll have a chance to explore historic temples, palaces, and mosques, as well as see ancient ruins and relics that date back to the days of the powerful empires that once ruled the archipelago. 

A popular cultural place in Bali is Penglipuran Village, it’s described as a traditional Balinese village but we weren’t too sure as it felt more like a tourist trap.

13. Ancient Temples

Indonesia is home to numerous ancient temples that provide a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage. One of the most famous is Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the island of Java. 

Borobudur is a massive Buddhist temple constructed in the 9th century and consists of nine stacked platforms adorned with thousands of intricate carvings and statues. The temple’s impressive size and exquisite artistry make it a must-visit destination for those interested in exploring Indonesia’s ancient history. 

Other notable temples in Indonesia include Prambanan, a complex of Hindu temples also located in Java, and Tanah Lot, a stunning temple perched on a rock formation overlooking the ocean in Bali. Tanah Lot is close to the popular surf town of Canggu and is somewhere worth visiting while you’re travelling Indonesia!

14. Rice Paddies

Visiting rice paddies in Indonesia is a great way to experience the country’s rich agricultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest rice producers and its rice terraces have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. 

The lush green fields of rice paddies are not only visually stunning but also a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of Indonesian farmers who have been cultivating these crops for centuries. 

The wonderful thing about this experience is that you can hike through the terraced fields, learn about traditional farming techniques, and even participate in the rice planting and harvesting process if you want. 

15. Culinary Delights

Finally, we come to the most important thing which makes Indonesia worth visiting, the food! A foodie’s heaven, Indonesian cuisine is undoubtedly some of the tastiest in the world. 

Bali, in particular, has created a fusion of local and international flavours with a modern twist. From street food to fine dining, the island offers a diverse range of dining experiences. 

Outside of Bali, you’ll notice traditional Indonesian cuisine is characterised by the use of aromatic spices and fresh herbs, fresh coconut and lots of fried rice or noodle dishes. The result is rich and flavourful meals including my favourite, the rendang curry!

So, whether it’s sipping coffee in a trendy cafe in Bali or tucking into a spicey curry in Sumatra Indonesia’s culinary scene is a delicious reflection of the country’s cultural diversity.

✅ Editors Pick: Who doesn’t love a cooking class when overseas?! Jack and I did one in Bukit Lawang which was super fun. We learnt about different spices and cooking styles and how to make the dishes authentic. Bali is also a great place to try an authentic Indonesian cooking class!

Hopefully, by now you know what Indonesia is all about but to summarise, Indonesia is a vast and diverse country known for its rich culture, natural beauty, and vibrant cities. The country is comprised of thousands of islands, each with its own unique culture, language, and landscape. 

Bali, the most famous of these islands, is known for its beautiful beaches, lush rice paddies, and vibrant Balinese-Hindu culture. In addition to Bali, Indonesia is also home to other popular spots such as the island of Lombok and the city of Yogyakarta in Java, which is known for its ancient temples and traditional Javanese culture.

On top of this, Indonesia is world-renowned for its natural wonders, including volcanoes, rainforests, and coral reefs with some of the best diving in the world. The country is home to some of the world’s most stunning natural attractions, such as Raja Ampat, an archipelago in West Papua known for its incredible marine biodiversity.

When Is The Best Time To Go To Indonesia?

The best time to visit Indonesia depends on where you plan to go and what activities you want to do. Generally, Indonesia has two main seasons – the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season runs from April to September, and the rainy season runs from October to March.

If you plan to visit Bali, the dry season is the most popular time to go. This is when the weather is generally sunny and dry, and the beaches are at their best. June to August is the peak tourist season in Bali, so expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

For those of you interested in outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring national parks, the dry season is also the best time to go. During the rainy season, some areas may be inaccessible due to flooding or landslides.

That said, some activities such as white water rafting and visiting waterfalls, such as Aling Aling waterfall in north Bali, are at their best during the rainy season when the rivers run fast and high. If you have specific activities in mind be sure to check when the best to go is!

Keep in mind that Indonesia is a vast country with many different regions and climates, so it’s always a good idea to research the specific areas you plan to visit before deciding on the best time to go.

Types Of Accommodation In Indonesia

Indonesia has a wide range of accommodation options to suit all types of travellers and budgets. From budget hostels and guesthouses to luxury resorts, there are plenty of choices available.

For my backpackers and budget-conscious readers, hostels and guesthouses are great options. We stayed in budget accommodations as we travelled around Indonesia including guesthouses, homestays and hostels. These accommodations offer basic facilities such as dormitory-style rooms and shared bathrooms, but are clean and affordable. 

Homestays are a great way to experience local culture while staying with a host family. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the Indonesian culture and support small businesses this is a great way to do it. Some of them can be really nice like the one we stayed at in Pemuteran, Bali!

For those of you seeking more luxury, there are plenty of high-end resorts and hotels in popular tourist destinations such as Bali, Lombok, and Java. These accommodations offer top-class facilities such as private villas, swimming pools, and spa treatments.

Indonesia also offers other unique options such as glamping and eco-lodges. Both glamping and eco-lodges offer sustainable and eco-friendly accommodations surrounded by natural beauty.

Where To Visit In Indonesia

During our travels around Indonesia, we stayed in various locations. As I previously mentioned, we didn’t visit half as many places as we would have liked to. However, the places we did visit were both stunning and educational. 

Here’s where we went and where you could also consider heading on your own trip!

✔️ Bali

We spent 6 months in Bali and really explored the island. We even did a 4-week road trip around the coast where we rented scooters in Bali for the trip! Some of our favourite Bali locations included Canggu, Medewi, Amed, Ubud and the Nusa Islands.

✔️ Lombok

Lombok was an incredible island and although we only explored the south we made some of the best memories! We based ourselves in Kuta (Lombok’s Kuta not to be mistaken with Bali’s Kuta) and spent weeks trying to learn to surf!

✔️ Java

During our time in Java, we hiked to the blue crater of Mount Ijen in hopes of seeing the blue fire, it rained so we didn’t but we were blessed with the most stunning of sunrises. We also visited the capital city, Jakarta before flying to Singapore.

✔️ Flores

We spent a little over one week in Flores as this is the base for visiting Komodo National Park. The island has much to offer as well but unfortunately, we were only able to explore Labuan Bajo and Komodo. If you head here, pen in some time to travel around the island!

✔️ Sumatra

Sumatra was a beautiful place where we spent a few weeks visiting areas such as Bukit Lawang, Medan and Lake Toba. All three had their own charm but Bukit Lawang is where we went for our orangutan trek and a great little spot right by a river.

Is Indonesia Safe?

In our opinion, Indonesia is generally a safe country to visit for travellers, we didn’t have any problems. However, as with any destination, there are some safety concerns that travellers should be aware of. 

The most common risks include petty theft, pickpocketing, and scams in touristy areas. ATM scams and fake tours prevail. Exercise caution and common sense when travelling, such as not displaying valuables, staying in well-lit areas, and avoiding unlicensed transportation. 

You should also be aware that this is a potential for natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, which can occur in certain parts of the country. Always keep informed and up to date with the current news and government announcements. 

Nevertheless, with proper precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip to Indonesia!

Is Indonesia Friendly To Foreigners?

Yes, Indonesia is friendly to foreigners. Indonesians are known for their hospitality and warmth towards visitors, especially in rural areas. However, like in any other country, it is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. 

Luckily for us, English is widely spoken in popular tourist areas, so communication is pretty easy. If that fails, the universal language of gestures and a big smile will always help too! 

Overall, I truly think Indonesia is a great destination worth visiting. If you’re looking for a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural experiences in a welcoming environment, you’ll enjoy Indonesia.

Is Indonesia Safer Than Thailand?

It’s difficult to make a direct comparison as both countries have their own unique safety concerns. However, Indonesia is generally considered safe for tourists, but like any other country, it’s important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. 

Thailand is also considered a safe destination, but there have been instances of violent crimes such as assault and robbery.  In recent years, there have also been reports of political unrest in Thailand, which can sometimes result in violence. 

Again, it’s important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings while travelling in either country. Ultimately, both Indonesia and Thailand can be safe destinations.

Is It Expensive To Visit Indonesia?

The cost of visiting Indonesia can vary depending on your travel style and preferences. In general, Indonesia is considered to be an affordable destination compared to many other popular travel destinations in the world. It makes a great budget backpacking spot! 

Accommodation, transportation, and food can be very cheap. If you’re planning to backpack, you’ll have to stay in budget accommodations and eat at local restaurants. This will keep costs down.

However, prices can also vary depending on where you go and where you stay in Indonesia. Bali, for example, can be just as cheap or extremely expensive. There are many luxury resorts which cost thousands! Additionally, activities such as diving or trekking may come with extra costs. 

Overall, Indonesia can be a relatively inexpensive destination, but it’s always a good idea to plan and budget accordingly.

How Long Should You Spend In Indonesia?

The amount of time you should spend in Indonesia depends on your travel goals and interests. Indonesia is a vast country, so it’s almost impossible to see everything in one trip. 

However, I’d say anywhere from two weeks to four is recommended to explore the country’s major highlights.

✔️ If you’re interested in island hopping and beach destinations, you can easily spend two weeks exploring Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands. These places have great tropical beaches!

✔️ For culture and heritage, Java is a must-visit with its ancient temples, vibrant cities, and traditional villages. That said, Bali also has some magnificent temples.

✔️ For nature and adventure, Sumatra and Borneo offer rainforest treks, orangutan tours, and wildlife watching. These are two of the best places to head in Indonesia

✔️ If you have more time, you can also consider visiting Sulawesi, Flores, or the remote Papua region – somewhere we wish we had gone! It’s always a good idea to plan your itinerary in advance and allow for some flexibility. Indonesia can be unpredictable and full of surprises, but a great adventure!

What Are The Negatives Of Indonesian Tourism?

Indonesia’s tourism industry faces various negative aspects that could affect your holiday experience. One of the most significant issues is over-tourism, which has become a problem in some popular destinations, including Bali. 

The rapid influx of tourists has resulted in environmental and infrastructure strain, leading to issues such as traffic congestion, pollution, and waste management problems. Moreover, coral reefs have been damaged due to increased human activity in the area.

Another challenge that you might encounter, especially in Bali is the rise of scams and petty crime. Additionally, stray dogs are a common sight in Bali, and you need to be cautious when interacting with them. Many are in poor health which can be disturbing to see.

Outside Bali, street harassment and unwanted attention towards women in tourist areas have also been noted. If you’re a solo female traveller you might feel uncomfortable or unsafe when walking alone or using public transportation. 

In addition, Indonesia has a conservative culture, especially outside of Bali, which many tourists forget. It’s vital you respect local customs and dress codes to avoid causing offence.
