This Marino Beach Colombo review is based on my final night in Sri Lanka, after travelling through the country in a mix of hostels, homestays and guesthouses.
By the time I reached Colombo, I wanted somewhere a little more comfortable, private and easy before flying out to Indonesia, and a rooftop pool and proper buffet breakfast sounded very appealing.
Marino Beach Colombo felt like a good middle ground. It had a rooftop infinity pool, a spa, an ocean-facing location, and a 5-star feel; it didn’t come across as pretentious in that stiff, luxury-hotel way I don’t really enjoy.
Here’s my honest review of Marino Beach Colombo, including what I liked, what wasn’t quite perfect, and whether I think it’s worth booking for your final night in Sri Lanka.

It’s not a small boutique stay, but after travelling through Sri Lanka in smaller stays, this was exactly the kind of comfortable final-night hotel I wanted before flying out.

My thoughts
For me, Marino Beach Colombo made sense as a comfortable city stay rather than somewhere I’d base myself for a long Colombo trip.
The rooftop pool was a lovely bonus, the spa treatment was one of the better ones I had in Sri Lanka, and the room felt bright, clean and comfortable.
It wasn’t perfect, especially with the construction obstructing my balcony view and the slightly awkward spa access, but overall, I was happy with my stay.
Before Colombo, I spent a few slow days on the south coast, so you might also find my 4 days in Ahangama itinerary useful if you’re planning a beach stop before heading back to the capital.

How To Get To Marino Beach Colombo From The Airport Or Train Station
Marino Beach Colombo is located on Marine Drive in Colombo 03, opposite the ocean and close to Bambalapitiya Railway Station.
If you’re arriving in Colombo at the end of your Sri Lanka trip, as I was, the easiest way to get here is by taxi or PickMe.
You can use the official airport taxi service at arrivals, pre-arrange a hotel pick-up, or book through PickMe.
From Bandaranaike International Airport, I’d personally choose a taxi or pre-arranged hotel pick-up, especially if you’re arriving with luggage or after a long travel day.
The journey to Colombo can take around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, as Colombo traffic can be very chaotic, especially during rush hour.
You can also travel by public transport, but it’s less direct.
If you arrive by train or shuttle-bus into Colombo Fort Station, you can either take a tuk-tuk straight to the hotel or hop on a short local train to Bambalapitiya Railway Station, which is the closest useful station for Marino Beach Colombo.
It takes around 10 minutes to walk from Bambalapitiya Railway Station to Marino Beach Colombo.

Pro tip: A tuk-tuk is fine for short city journeys, especially from Colombo Fort or Bambalapitiya Railway Station, but I wouldn’t choose one all the way from the airport unless you’re travelling very light and feeling unusually committed to the bumps.

Check-In & First Impressions
Marino Beach Colombo made a good first impression as soon as I arrived.
After travelling through Sri Lanka in smaller guesthouses and hostels, it immediately felt more polished and put together, but not in a pretentious way.
I was greeted warmly at reception, handed a fresh juice and checked in without any issues.
One detail I really noticed was the female staff wearing beautiful saris.
It was a small thing, but it added a lovely sense of place and made the hotel feel more connected to Sri Lanka, rather than just another big city hotel that could be anywhere.
I did have to pay a deposit for the room when I checked in, which was refunded in full when I checked out. My bags were also taken up separately and arrived shortly after I got to the room.
Overall, check-in felt smooth, friendly and easy, which was exactly what I wanted after arriving in Colombo for my final night in Sri Lanka.

Why I Booked Marino Beach Colombo
I booked Marino Beach Colombo because I wanted a really comfortable stay with a bit of luxury on my final night before leaving Sri Lanka.
For most of my trip, I’d stayed in a mix of hostels, homestays and guesthouses, which I loved, but by the time I reached Colombo, I was ready for a private room, a big bed, an indulgent breakfast and somewhere I could relax before flying out to Indonesia.
Accommodation in Sri Lanka is also relatively affordable compared to many other destinations, so booking a 5-star hotel for one night didn’t feel like a ridiculous splurge.
It felt more like a small end-of-trip treat.
Marino Beach stood out because it offered a rooftop infinity pool, spa, buffet breakfast, and an ocean-facing location, all while remaining practical for a short Colombo stay.
I also booked the Premier King Room, which came with a complimentary city tour and access to the Beach Lounge.
I didn’t use either in the end, but if you arrive earlier in the day or stay more than one night, they could add decent value to the stay.
I wasn’t looking for a resort-style escape or somewhere with loads of character; I wanted comfort, convenience and a smooth final night in the city.
For that, it made a lot of sense.

Who Marino Beach Colombo Is For / Who It’s Not For
Marino Beach Colombo is a good choice if you want a comfortable, modern hotel in Colombo with a little bit of a treat-yourself feel.
Marino Beach Colombo is best for:
- A comfortable few nights in Colombo
- Couples wanting a modern hotel with a rooftop pool
- Solo travellers who want somewhere easy and secure
- Short city stays before or after a flight
- Good if you enjoy a big buffet breakfast
- You want a 5-star hotel experience
Marino Beach Colombo might not be for you if:
- You prefer small boutique hotels
- You want a quiet beach escape
- You’re travelling on a tight backpacker budget
- You prefer homestays or locally run guesthouses
- You want to walk everywhere, as Colombo’s sights are quite spread out (you’re better staying in Fort or Pettah)
Even though Marino Beach Colombo is on the ocean, it’s still a city hotel. Expect traffic, tuk-tuks, high-rise buildings and that busy Colombo energy.

Accommodation Options At Marino Beach Colombo
Marino Beach Colombo has a mix of rooms and suites, so it’s worth checking the room type carefully before booking, especially if sea views, breakfast or extra perks matter to you.
Room Types
- Deluxe Room: Best if you want the most affordable room option at Marino Beach Colombo but still want a balcony, partial sea view and access to the rooftop infinity pool.
- Premier Room: This is the room I booked. It was bright, modern and comfortable, with a balcony, a partial sea view, a private bathroom, air-con, a mini-bar and enough space for a short stay.
- Signature Room: Best if the sea view matters to you. I didn’t book this room, but looking back, this is probably the category I’d consider next time if I wanted the stay to feel a little more special, as it comes with a full sea view.
- Signature Plus Room: Best for couples or travellers who want more space. These rooms are larger, so I think this would be a better option if you’re staying for more than one night.
- Signature Panorama: Best if you want sea views, breakfast and a few extra touches like afternoon tea. I didn’t stay in this room, but it sounds like a good option if you’re using Marino Beach Colombo as more than just a quick overnight stop.
- Signature Suite One Bedroom: Best for a proper splurge stay. This would suit couples, honeymooners or anyone wanting more space, sea views and extra perks such as airport transfers, afternoon tea and evening cocktails.
👉BOOK: I stayed in the Premier Room, which worked well for a short Colombo stay, but if sea views matter to you, I’d compare the Signature room options before booking.
Room Quality And Sleep
My Premier Room at Marino Beach Colombo was bright, modern and well-maintained, with a comfortable hotel feel. It wasn’t overly flashy, but it felt clean, spacious and easy.
- Space & bed: The room felt spacious, and the bed was comfy and fresh with plenty of pillows.
- Climate: The air-con worked well, which I really appreciated in Colombo.
- Storage: There was enough space for my luggage and belongings, especially as I was only staying for one night.
- Wi-Fi: Wifi was very strong.
- Noise: I didn’t have any problems with noise, even though there was construction opposite my balcony.
The only real downside was the view. I could see the ocean, but only from the side of the balcony, and the building directly opposite was under construction. It didn’t disturb me, but it did mean the balcony wasn’t somewhere I wanted to sit and relax.
The room also had a mini-bar, tea and coffee facilities, a Ceylon tea box, free bottled water, a safe, wardrobe space, desk, TV, bathrobe and slippers. I especially liked the tea box — after two weeks in Sri Lanka, I was still not over the tea. The British wiring is simply too strong.

Private Bathroom
The private bathroom was one of the standout features of my room at Marino Beach Colombo.
It had a glass window that looked into the bedroom, which made the space feel more open and modern.
There was a blind for privacy, so it wasn’t as dramatic as it might sound.
The bathroom felt clean, spacious and well-designed, and it definitely added to the more comfortable, luxurious feel of the stay.

Accessibility At Marino Beach Colombo
Marino Beach Colombo has lift access, which made it easy to move between the room, lobby, breakfast area and rooftop facilities.
The hotel also has accessible rooms, although I’d recommend contacting Marino Beach Colombo directly before booking if you have specific accessibility requirements.
This is especially important if you need a particular bathroom setup, step-free access, extra space around the bed or a room close to the lifts.
I didn’t stay in an accessible room myself, so I can’t provide a full accessibility review.
However, from my experience, the main hotel areas felt easy to navigate, and the lifts made it a practical option compared to smaller guesthouses or older properties in Sri Lanka.

Facilities & Common Areas
Marino Beach Colombo has plenty of facilities, which is one of the reasons it works well for a comfortable final night in the city.
- Rooftop Infinity Pool: The rooftop infinity pool is the main highlight. It has ocean views and was a lovely place to cool off after exploring Colombo, although it is overlooked by surrounding buildings. At first, I noticed this, but then I reminded myself that this is still a city hotel, not a remote beach resort.
- Rooftop Garden: Next to the pool, there is also a rooftop garden area. It feels a little unusual at first, but it actually works quite well. It creates extra space to relax and enjoy the views without being right beside the pool.
- Tonic Lanka Spa & Wellness: I also booked a 90-minute full-body massage and facial at the spa, and it was one of the best treatments I had in Sri Lanka. It was more expensive than visiting a local spa, but the service was excellent, and I thought it was worth the price.
The only awkward part was getting to the spa. I had to walk through the rooftop restaurant area in my robe, which felt a bit uncomfortable. - Lobby, Lounge Cafe And Common Areas: The lobby area felt bright and welcoming, with a lounge cafe near the foyer. I didn’t eat there properly, but I did notice sweet treats at the counter and saw people enjoying afternoon tea.
I didn’t use every facility during my stay, but there is also a lobby lounge café, restaurants, bars, a fitness centre and other on-site entertainment facilities.
Marino Beach Colombo is connected to Marino Mall, which is handy if you want somewhere easy to browse, grab food or escape the heat for a bit. I wouldn’t say it’s the reason to book the hotel, but for a short Colombo stay, having shops and food options close by is a useful bonus.

Breakfast At Marino Beach Colombo
Breakfast at Marino Beach Colombo was buffet-style and included in my room rate.
I’ll be honest, I do love a hotel buffet breakfast, and this one was pretty impressive.
There was a big mix of Sri Lankan and international options, with plenty to choose from whether you wanted something light or a proper plateful before heading out.
I enjoyed wandering around and inspecting everything first, as one does when faced with a breakfast buffet and too many tiny decisions.
In the end, I went for hoppers, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cold cuts and cheese.
There was indoor and outdoor seating, but I chose to sit inside with the air-con. Since I was flying out later that day, staying cool and fresh felt more appealing than sitting outside in the Colombo heat.
For me, breakfast was one of the things that made Marino Beach Colombo feel worth it – having a delicious, easy hotel breakfast before my flight was a lovely final-day treat.
Best Tours & Excursions In Colombo
If you only have a short time in Colombo, I’d really recommend booking a city tour rather than trying to piece everything together yourself.
Colombo’s attractions are quite spread out, and the city can feel busy when you first arrive. Having a guide made my day feel much easier, especially as I only had one full day before flying out.
- Colombo City Highlights Tuk-Tuk Tour: This is the tour I booked, and it was a brilliant way to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time.
- Colombo Street Food Tour: One I’d consider if I had more time. Colombo has a brilliant mix of street food, markets, cafes and Sri Lankan restaurants, so this food-focused tour would be a fun way to explore the city.
- Colombo Cooking Class: This is another Colombo experience I’d consider if I had more time in the city. It’s a private cooking class where you learn to make traditional Sri Lankan dishes with a local host!
For me, the tuk-tuk tour was the best choice. It gave me a memorable introduction to Colombo, and it meant I could make the most of my final day.

What’s Nearby Marino Beach Colombo?
Marino Beach Colombo is well-located if you want to explore the city, but I’d still recommend using tuk-tuks or PickMe to get around.
Colombo’s sights are quite spread out, and walking between attractions isn’t always the easiest or most enjoyable option.
The hotel is opposite the ocean on Marine Drive, so you get that coastal city feel, but this is not a peaceful beach neighbourhood. Expect traffic, tuk-tuks, high-rise buildings and plenty of movement around you.
Nearby places to visit include:
- Marino Mall: Connected to the hotel and handy for food, shopping or escaping the heat for a while.
- Barefoot Garden Cafe & Shop: A lovely spot for gifts, textiles, books and a wander if you like creative shops, plus a cute cafe.
- Saturday Good Market: Held on Saturdays at Colombo Racecourse, usually from 9 am to 5 pm. It’s a good one to know about if your stay falls over the weekend.
- Colombo National Museum: A good stop if you want more historical context before leaving Sri Lanka.
- Viharamahadevi Park: Colombo’s largest public park and a good green-space escape from the city.
- Independence Square: A peaceful photo stop with wide open space and colonial-era architecture nearby.
Insider note: I had read a few mixed comments about the neighbourhood before staying, but personally, I didn’t have any issues walking around. Tuk-tuk drivers did call out, but that happens in a lot of places in Sri Lanka and didn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

End Note: Would I Stay At Marino Beach Colombo Again?
Yes, I would stay at Marino Beach Colombo again, especially for one or two nights in the city.
For me, it worked really well as a comfortable end-of-trip hotel. After moving between hostels, homestays and guesthouses, I loved having a private room, a big bed, air-con, a spa treatment, a rooftop pool and an easy buffet breakfast before flying out.
It wasn’t perfect. My balcony view wasn’t great, the spa access was awkward, and the location still felt very much like a busy city rather than a relaxing beach escape.
But overall, I was happy with my stay.
I don’t think I’d book Marino Beach Colombo for a long, slow stay in the capital, as I usually prefer smaller, more characterful places.
But if you’re wondering where to stay in Colombo and want somewhere modern, comfortable and slightly more special without going into full luxury-resort territory, Marino Beach Colombo is a solid choice.
