I Did A Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise Tour with Hot Springs: Here’s My Honest Review

Mount Batur sunrise tours are one of those Bali experiences that look magical in photos; a sweeping volcanic landscape, the soft glow of first light over Lake Batur, cool mountain air and the promise of a memorable start to the day.

But if, like me, you are travelling with family or simply don’t fancy the idea of hiking an active volcano in the dark, the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour offers a much easier way to soak it all in.

I did this sunrise tour with my parents, adding on the Mount Batur hot springs and a coffee plantation visit, and it turned into one of the most enjoyable full-day trips we did in Bali.

It had a little bit of everything: dramatic scenery, an off-road adventure, volcanic black lava fields, a long soak in beauitful pools overlooking the lake, and a few lovely surprises along the way.

So, if you’re wondering whether the Mount Batur jeep sunrise is worth it, or whether you should add the hot springs too, here’s my honest review and what you can expect.

Key Takeaways: Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise

  • A great alternative to the Mount Batur sunrise hike if you still want the views without the steep pre-dawn climb.
  • The volcanic scenery is spectacular, with sweeping views over Lake Batur, the surrounding villages and the dramatic black lava fields.
  • The jeep ride is fun and adventurous, but it is also cold, bumpy and a little unpleasant at times (the fumes from the jeeps ahead during the drive).
  • Sunrise is never guaranteed, and ours was mostly hidden behind thick cloud, so I would not book this tour for the sunrise alone.
  • For me, the hot springs absolutely made the day, turning it from a nice early-morning trip into a much more enjoyable and well-rounded full-day experience.

🌟 My top pick >> If you want to experience Mount Batur without doing the hike, this jeep sunrise tour is such a good option, but I would definitely add the hot springs. They made the whole day feel far more worthwhile, especially when the sunrise did not fully show up.

Why I Think This Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise Tour Is Worth It

I booked this Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour in Bali, Indonesia, because I wanted my parents to experience the volcano without putting them through a tough pre-dawn hike.

I’d climbed Mount Batur a few years earlier, so this felt like the perfect alternative; all the scenery and atmosphere, but in a much easier and more comfortable way.

What makes this tour worth it, in my opinion, is not just the sunrise viewpoint itself, but the full day around it.

Yes, the views over the volcanic landscape are beautiful, and the black lava fields are fascinating, but the hot springs were what really made the experience for me.

After the cold, dark and very bumpy jeep ride up the mountain, sinking into warm pools overlooking Lake Batur felt incredible. And to top it off, we stopped at a coffee plantation for a free tasting with stunning views over the jungle.

That said, I do think it’s worth being honest about the drawbacks.

The jeep ride can be noisy, chilly and a little unpleasant at times because of the fumes in the vehicles ahead, and sunrise is never guaranteed; ours was mostly hidden behind clouds.

The breakfast was also very basic – banana sandwiches, boiled eggs and coffee. It might be a good idea to take some snacks with you.

But as a full-day trip, especially with the hot springs and coffee plantation added on, I think this Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour is absolutely worth doing.

BOOK: For a full day of volcanic views, black lava fields and a relaxing soak afterwards, this Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour is well worth considering.

My Experience and What You Can Expect

Cloudy pre-dawn sky over Kintamani.

We left Ubud at 3 am, with our driver heading towards Kintamani. Around an hour and a half later, we arrived and transferred into the jeep for the sunrise part of the tour.

It was still dark, the air was cool, and because the jeep is open, the ride up felt very exposed.

I’ll be honest, this was probably my least favourite part of the day. The track was rough, the ride was loud and uneven, and the fumes from the jeeps ahead were quite unpleasant.

Still, once we reached the viewpoint, the atmosphere changed completely.

We sat under a sky full of stars, chatting and waiting for sunrise, though sadly ours ended up mostly hidden behind clouds, but the scenery was still incredible.

After that, we drove down into the black lava fields, which were one of the most fascinating parts of the trip. The landscape felt wild and dramatic, with Mount Batur towering above us and hardened lava stretching out around the jeep.

From there, we headed to Batur Natural Hot Spring, and for me, this is what made the whole trip worth it. The pools were clean, relaxing and looked straight over Lake Batur.

We finished with a stop at a coffee plantation in Kintamani – we had a free tasting – which rounded the day off nicely.

Even without the perfect sunrise, it was still a really enjoyable full-day trip.

Restaurant Shoutout >> On our way back to Ubud, we asked the driver to stop for some lunch (since we didn’t eat much for breakfast). He said he knew a really good local restaurant – Babi Guling Cuan Garden. Check it out; it was delicious, affordable and with a friendly owner who made us fresh guava juice straight from the tree.

Two More Fun Activities in Bali Worth Doing

If you’re looking for a couple more memorable things to do in Bali, these are two other experiences I’d recommend.

I’ve done both, and they work well if you want one active adventure and one broader sightseeing day.

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

Standing at the summit during the Mount Batur sunrise hike.

If you like the idea of seeing this volcanic landscape on foot, the Mount Batur sunrise hike is such a rewarding experience.

I did it a few years ago, and while it is a much earlier and more physically demanding start than the jeep tour, the views from the summit feel really special.

👉 BOOK: If you want a more active way to experience Mount Batur, the sunrise hike is probably the best way to see the landscape properly. Read my full review here.

Best of Ubud Day Trip

If you want a slower-paced day filled with culture, scenery and some of Ubud’s most popular sights, this Best of Ubud day trip is a lovely option.

It’s a very different kind of experience from Mount Batur, but a great one if you want to balance early mornings and adventure with something more relaxed.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

This Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour is a great option if you want the views without the hike, but there are a few things I’d keep in mind before you go.

  • Bring warm layers: The jeep is open, and it feels surprisingly cold before sunrise, especially on the ride up.
  • Wear proper shoes: Trainers are best, as the ground can be uneven, dusty and rocky at the viewpoint and black lava fields.
  • Do not book it for the sunrise alone: Sunrise is never guaranteed, so I think this trip is much more worth it if you choose the hot spring add-on too.
  • Expect a rough ride up: The track is bumpy, noisy and a little fumey at times, so just go in knowing it is not the smoothest part of the day.
  • Keep your expectations low for breakfast: Ours was very basic, so I’d maybe bring a snack if you know you’ll be hungry after such an early start.

End Note: Is the Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise Tour Worth It?

For me, yes, but only if you treat it as more than just a sunrise trip.

The views around Mount Batur are beautiful, and the jeep is a great alternative for anyone who wants to experience the volcano without doing the steep early morning hike.

That said, the ride up is cold, bumpy and not especially comfortable, and because sunrise is never guaranteed, I don’t think this tour is worth booking for that part alone.

What made it for me were the extras.

The black lava fields were fascinating, the hot springs were superb, and the coffee plantation rounded the day off really nicely. Without those, I think I would have left feeling a little underwhelmed.

So, if you like the idea of seeing Mount Batur in an easier way and want a full day out rather than a quick sunrise stop, I do think this trip is worth it – especially with the hot spring add-on.

FAQs: Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise

Is the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour worth it?
Yes, I think the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour is worth it, especially if you want to experience the volcano without doing the hike. For me, the real value was in booking it as a full-day trip with the black lava fields, hot springs and coffee plantation, rather than relying on the sunrise alone.

Is the Mount Batur jeep tour better than the hike?
That really depends on what kind of experience you want. The Mount Batur jeep tour is better if you want an easier, more comfortable way to enjoy the landscape, especially if you are travelling with family or don’t fancy a steep early morning climb. The hike is more rewarding if you want the full adventure and don’t mind the effort.

What should I wear for the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour?
It gets surprisingly cold before sunrise, especially because the jeep is open, so I’d definitely bring a warm jacket or hoodie. Trainers are best, too, as the ground can be uneven and dusty at the viewpoint and at the black lava fields.

Should you add the hot springs to the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour?
Yes, I really think so. For me, the hot springs made the whole experience feel much more worthwhile, especially as our sunrise was hidden behind clouds. After the cold, bumpy jeep ride, soaking in the warm pools overlooking Lake Batur was honestly one of the best parts of the day.
