I absolutely loved Orta San Giulio, and if you’re looking for an accommodation guide, I know the best areas to rest your head. During our Italy road trip, Jack and I visited Orta San Giulio as part of our North Piedmont lake itinerary and fell in love with the quaint medieval town.
It sits on the edge of Lake Orta, one of Italy’s smaller lakes, but I think it is one of the prettiest – it’s definitely one of the cleanest in Europe! Orta San Giulio might not be a big town; in truth, you probably only need a day to see the main attractions, but it makes a great base. The nearby towns of Pela and Omegna are worth a visit, accessible by road or, even better, by ferry across the lake.
Over the mountain to the east is Lake Maggiore. Lake Maggiore is better known and an easy drive from Lake Orta; there are numerous towns and villages, such as Stresa, Arona, and Verbania, that are worth exploring.
If you want to head west into the Valsesia Valley, I highly recommend visiting Varallo Sesia. It was one of my favourite towns and is home to the Sacro Monte di Varallo with stunning panoramic views.
