2 days in Ella is just enough time to fall for the misty hills, deep green tea plantations and slow, winding train tracks that have made this little town one of Sri Lankaโs most-loved stops.
I spent my time in Ella hiking, cooling off in turquoise pools, and visiting famous railway sights like Nine Arch Bridge and the Demodara Loop.
In this guide, Iโm sharing my Ella 2-day itinerary for anyone trying to make the most of a short stay.

At A Glance: 2 Days in Ella Itinerary
If you only have 2 days in Ella, this itinerary gives you a really good mix of the townโs most famous sights and a few more peaceful spots that make it feel a little more special.
- Day 1: Ella Rock, Forest Monastery, Natural Pools, massage, dinner in Ella Town
- Day 2: Nine Arch Bridge, Demodara Loop Viewpoint, scenic train ride back to Ella, plus one optional afternoon activity.
This itinerary is best for first-time visitors, solo travellers, and anyone who enjoys viewpoints, light adventure, and a scenic train experience. Itโs fairly busy but manageable if you start early.
Good to know: This itinerary works best in dry weather, but Iโve included a few flexible swaps if you want a slower or easier second day. I’ve also written a detailed guide if you’re looking for more things to do in Ella.

The Best Ella 2-Day Itinerary
I loved Ella; perched in the countryโs lush hill country, it has a way of feeling both peaceful and adventurous at the same time.
This itinerary covers how I spent 2 days in Ella, with a mix of iconic sights, personal highlights, practical tips, and a few flexible options depending on how active you want your trip to be.
๐ My top pick >> This Discover Ella tour includes Ella Rock, Little Adamโs Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, so itโs a brilliant option if you want a full sightseeing day without organising it all yourself.
Morning: Start Early with Ella Rock

If you are happy to begin the day early, I think Ella Rock is one of the best places to start.
The views from the top are stunning, with rolling hills, tea-covered slopes and that soft morning light that makes Ella feel especially magical.
I did this hike independently, and while it is very doable without a guide, it helps to have a rough idea of the route before you go.
Further reading: Iโve written a full guide to hiking Ella Rock which includes information on both the forest monastery and natural pools below.
Pro tip: Best tackled first thing in the morning before the heat builds and before the trails get busier. Sunrise is beautiful if youโre up for the early alarm.
๐BOOK: This Ella Rock hiking tour is a good option if you want the views without worrying about the route.
Late Morning: Visit the Forest Monastery

After Ella Rock, the Forest Monastery feels like a really lovely contrast. Instead of viewpoints and sweaty uphill climbs, this stop is calmer, quieter and more reflective.
Itโs hidden among the trees and has a peaceful atmosphere that makes it feel far removed from the busier side of Ella, even though itโs not far away at all.
The surroundings are beautiful, the setting feels serene, and after the exertion of the hike, it makes a nice, slower stop before moving on.
Just remember to dress respectfully, keep noise to a minimum, and be mindful that photos arenโt allowed.
Pro tip: Bring some prepared questions for the monks, who are happy to sit and chat with you.
Midday: Cool Off at the Natural Pools

From there, these hidden Natural Pools make a brilliant next stop, especially if the day is already warming up.
After a morning of hiking, thereโs something very satisfying about reaching a peaceful spot like this, where you can cool down and enjoy the surroundings without needing to do very much at all.
I wouldn’t call this a major attraction like Ella Rock or the Nine Arch Bridge, but thatโs partly why I liked it. These pools feel more like a refreshing little add-on.
Pro tip: Itโs worth checking local access details with AMBA Estate before you go, just in case anything has changed.

Afternoon: Lunch and a Slower Pace in Ella Town

By this point, youโll probably be ready to ease off a bit, and thatโs exactly why I think the afternoon should be left more open.
Rather than trying to cram in another major sight, I would head back into Ella Town for a shower, a bit of rest, and simply some time to sit somewhere nice and recharge.
This is a good moment in the itinerary to enjoy Ella without an agenda.
You could stop for a rice and curry in town, find a cafรฉ with a view, or just wander along the main strip and see what catches your eye.
๐BOOK: Want a more laid-back Ella afternoon? The Ella Ravana Pool Club Dip & Dine pass includes pool access and drinks.
Evening: Massage, Dinner and an Early Night

If you want to end the day well, I think a massage is one of the nicest ways to do it.
After Ella Rock, your legs will probably thank you for it, and it turns the day from adventurous into properly indulgent.
After that, dinner in town is an easy one. Ella has plenty of casual places for kottu, roti, rice and curry, fresh juices and the occasional cold beer if that is what you fancy.
The second day of this 2 days in Ella itinerary is a little easier going, but it still packs in some of the areaโs most iconic sights.

Morning: Visit the Nine Arch Bridge Early

I would start the day at Nine Arch Bridge, ideally as early as you can manage.
Itโs one of Ellaโs most famous sights, and while it is beautiful at almost any time of day, itโs definitely a nicer experience before the crowds really build.
Surrounded by thick forest and rolling hills, with the great stone bridge stretching across the valley, it is easy to see why this spot has become such a favourite.
Further reading: Iโve written a full guide on how to get to the Nine Arch Bridge
Pro tip: If you want to see a train crossing, it helps to leave a bit of extra time and stay flexible, as timings can shift.
๐BOOK: Want an easier way to visit without figuring out the route yourself? This Ella highlights tour includes the Nine Arch Bridge as part of a wider sightseeing day around Ella.
Late Morning: Head to the Demodara Loop Viewpoint

From the Nine Arch Bridge, I would continue on to the Demodara Loop viewpoint, which was one of my favourite railway sights around Ella.
It feels more offbeat from Nine Arch; less of a dramatic stone landmark and more of a clever, slightly surreal moment in the landscape.
Getting there is easiest by tuk-tuk or by following local roads and paths. Once you arrive, the best thing to do is simply pause for a while and take it in.
The surrounding scenery is beautiful, and if you time it well, you can watch the train make its slow loop through the valley.
Further reading: More details on visiting the Demodara Railway Loop.
๐BOOK: If you want to see Demodara without doing the full railway walk yourself, this Ella 3 Icons tour includes the area as part of a wider sightseeing day.
Midday: Take the Train from Demodara Back to Ella

One of the nicest ways to finish this part of the day is by taking the short train ride from Demodara back to Ella.
Itโs not a long journey, but thatโs part of the charm.
You get the fun of boarding a local train in the middle of the hill country, watching the scenery pass by, and enjoying a little slice of one of Sri Lankaโs most famous rail routes.
I really liked this as part of the itinerary because it ties the morning together so well; you spend the day following the railway through the hills, then actually hop on board and ride it back into town.
Afternoon: Pick What Suits Your Energy Levels
After lunch, I think the best thing to do is leave the rest of the afternoon flexible.
By this point in your 2 days in Ella itinerary, youโve already seen some of Ellaโs biggest highlights, so you can either keep going or slow down depending on how you feel.
Option A: Little Adamโs Peak and Flying Ravana Zipline

If you still want one more viewpoint, Little Adamโs Peak is the easiest choice, and another popular choice for travellers visiting Ella.
The walk is much gentler than Ella Rock, the views are still lovely, and it fits neatly into the afternoon without feeling like too much.
If you want to add a little more excitement, this is also where you will find the Flying Ravana zipline, which is one of the more touristy things to do in Ella, but still fun if that is your sort of thing.
Pro tip: Check out the Flying Ravana Adventure Park page and recent reviews to see if it feels like your kind of fun.
Option B: Waterfalls โ Ravana Falls or Diyaluma Falls

If you are someone who likes to squeeze every drop out of a trip, you could use the afternoon for the waterfalls, either Ravana Falls or Diyaluma Falls (a bit further out).
Itโs more of a half-day outing and needs a bit more effort and transport planning, so personally, I think it’s only gonna suit you if you have extra energy rather than anyone already feeling slightly wilted.ย
Still, if you are up for a bigger adventure, itโs an excellent option.
๐ BOOK: Want to turn it into more of an outing? This Ravana and Upper Diyaluma Falls guided tour combines two of the areaโs best-known waterfall stops.
Option C: Tea Stop or Cafรฉ Crawl

For a slower finish, I think a tea stop in the afternoon works really well. Itโs in keeping with the best Ella highlights, and there are plenty of tours available.
Failing that, Ella is the sort of place where sitting with a drink and a mountain view somehow still feels like an activity; thereโs no shame at all in winding things down and hitting the cafe scene.
In fact, Iโd argue itโs excellent travel behaviour.
๐BOOK: See tea country beyond the view from the train and join this Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory tour; itโs an easy way to add something different to your Ella itinerary.
Dinner: One Last Evening in Ella
For your final evening, Iโd keep dinner relaxed and unfussy.
By now, youโve seen the main sights and earned the right to simply enjoy being in Ella. Have one last curry, order a beer or fresh juice, find dessert if you have room, and soak up the atmosphere before moving on.
- Cafe Chill: One of the most popular places to eat in Ella, with a lively atmosphere.
- C Cafe Ella: A quirky place to grab a local curry and rice.
- One Love Cafe: A cosy little spot with a laid-back feel right in the centre of town.
- Dream Cafe: A nice restaurant with a big terrace.

Make This Ella Itinerary Fit Your Travel Style
This 2 days in Ella itinerary can easily be tweaked depending on how active or relaxed you want your trip to be.
- Follow this itinerary as it is if you want to see Ellaโs main highlights in a short time.
- Swap Ella Rock for Little Adamโs Peak if you want an easier and less tiring day. Youโll still get lovely views, but with much less effort.
- Add Diyaluma Falls or Ravana Falls on Day 2 if you have extra energy and want a little more adventure. Just keep in mind that it will make the day busier and needs more transport planning.
- Keep Day 2 slower with cafรฉs or a tea stop if you want a more laid-back trip. Youโll see a little less, but it suits Ella really well if you prefer a gentler pace.

Costs & What Youโll Spend in 2 Days

Ella can be done on a fairly reasonable budget, but your total spend will depend a lot on where you stay and how often you use tuk-tuks.
For my trip, accommodation was the highest cost, while food, short rides and even the train from Demodara back to Ella were all pretty affordable.
Iโll do a full Sri Lanka cost breakdown in a separate post, but these are a few real examples to give you a rough idea from my last visit to Ella:
- Accommodation: 10,500โ20,750 LKR per night
- Short tuk-tuk rides: around 400โ800 LKR
- Demodara to Ella train: 20 LKR
- Local meals: around 1,000โ1,500 LKR
- Dinner and a beer: around 3,780 LKR
- Snacks and drinks: usually 250โ840 LKR
- Massage: around 9,000 LKR for 90 minutes
If you stay in a mid-range guesthouse, eat locally and only use tuk-tuks when needed, your 2 days in Ella donโt have to be overly expensive at all.
Where to Stay in Ella
For a short trip like this, I think it makes the most sense to stay either close to Ella Town or somewhere just outside it with a view.ย
Staying central makes it easier to walk to restaurants, cafรฉs and the station, while hillside stays tend to feel quieter and more scenic, though you may need the odd tuk-tuk to get back up after dinner.

I stayed in Secret View Homestay and Ella Ceylonka, and both worked well for different reasons.
Secret View Homestay was the pricier option (but still mid-range) and had lovely open views. Ella Ceylonka was a good option to keep costs down. Both were close enough to town to get around easily.
Insider tip: If you only have 2 days in Ella, I would personally choose somewhere convenient over somewhere too remote. The views are a big part of Ella, but being able to get in and out easily makes a short itinerary run much more smoothly.
How to Get to Ella

One of the best things about Ella is that even the tuk-tuk rides come with tea-country views.
Most people arrive in Ella by train, but the town is well-connected, so getting here is relatively easy.
The Kandy to Ella train is one of the most scenic journeys in Sri Lanka, winding through tea plantations, little villages and deep green highlands before finally pulling into town.ย
Itโs by far the most memorable way to arrive.
You can also reach Ella by bus, private driver or transfer, depending on where youโre coming from and how much time you have. From Colombo, buses and private transfers can be quicker or easier depending on connections.
And if you are coming from the south coast, a private transfer often makes the most sense, especially if you want to stop elsewhere on the way.
๐BOOK: If you want to secure your seat in advance, these Kandy to Ella train tickets take the stress out of booking one of Sri Lankaโs most popular rail journeys.
How to Get Around Ella

Ella town itself is small enough to get around on foot, especially if youโre staying near the centre.ย Walking the tracks around Ella always feels a little adventurous.
Restaurants, cafรฉs, the train station and guesthouses are all within easy walking distance, so for short stays you may not need much transport at all.ย
That said, Ella is hillier than it can look on the map, and some of the roads involve more climbing than you might expect.
For anything slightly further out, tuk-tuks are the easiest option. They make the days flow much more easily, especially when you are trying to fit quite a lot into just 2 days in Ella.
Theyโre handy for trailheads, waterfalls, accommodation in the hills and day trips where you do not want to rely on public transport.
I walked quite a lot while I was in Ella, but there were definitely moments, especially with luggage or after a long day, when a tuk-tuk would have been the better idea.
In other words, Ella is walkable, but not always effortlessly so.
Best Time to Visit Ella

One of my favourite things about Ella was just how green and peaceful everything felt.
Ella is one of the cooler parts of Sri Lanka thanks to its higher elevation, which makes it a pleasant break from the hotter lowlands.
In general, the best time to visit is during the drier months from January to April, when skies are clearer, and hiking conditions are usually better.
That said, the weather in the hills can be a little unpredictable, and even outside the so-called best season, you can still get lucky.
I visited Ella at the start of October and actually had great weather, despite that being considered part of the wetter season โ so I wouldnโt rule it out completely if thatโs when your trip falls.
The main thing to keep in mind is that rain can make trails muddier, viewpoints cloudier, and railway walks a little less enjoyable.
End Note: Is 2 Days in Ella Enough?
I do think 2 days in Ella is enough to see the main highlights, especially if you donโt mind one early start and a fairly full first day.
It gives you enough time to combine one proper hike with the areaโs famous railway sights, while still leaving a little space to slow down, linger around town and just enjoy the views.
That said, a third day would make everything feel more relaxed.
You would have more time for cafรฉ hopping, another viewpoint, or a half-day trip without having to think quite so much about the clock.
But if all you have are two days, I really wouldnโt worry.
Ella is one of those places that still feels satisfying even on a shorter stay, and this itinerary gives you a really nice balance of adventure, scenery and slower moments.
