Ella Ceylonka was my second little base in Ella, and it brought a different kind of charm to my time in Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Set just off Ella’s main road, this bright, boho-rustic guesthouse felt relaxed from the moment I arrived, with spacious rooms, little patios and a cosy café that gave the place a warm, tropical feel.

Ella Ceylonka is a small, family-run accommodation close to Ella’s main strip, with comfortable rooms, little private verandas and a cute on-site café.
It’s not a polished boutique stay, and if you’re after big mountain views, this probably isn’t the one.
Instead, it’s a handy base if you want to be close to town, cafés and the Nine Arch Bridge trailhead, but still tucked just far enough away from the main road to feel cosy.
- Best for: Travellers who want a relaxed, friendly guesthouse close to Ella town, the main strip and the Nine Arch Bridge trailhead.
- Location: On Ella–Passara Road, close enough to walk into town but tucked back from the main road, so it still feels peaceful.
- Tuk-tuk from Ella station: Around 5 minutes by tuk-tuk, or walkable if you’re travelling light. The road turns slightly uphill, so I’d probably grab a tuk-tuk if you have big bags.
- Breakfast: Served in the cosy café. My hosts were also kind enough to prepare my breakfast as lunch because I was leaving early the next morning.

How I Found Ella Ceylonka + Who It’s Best For
Ella is small, but where you stay does change how easy everything feels.
Some places give you dreamy hill views, while others make it much easier to wander out for food, cafés, and onward transport without relying on tuk-tuks all the time.

Ella Ceylonka felt like a nice balance. It was close enough to town to feel convenient, but still tucked back from the main road, which made it feel homely rather than hectic.
It had that laid-back, slightly beachy feel I love in a guesthouse: bright, friendly and easy-going, without trying too hard to be fancy.
Best for/not for:
- It’s ideal for backpackers and couples who want a guesthouse close to Ella town and the Nine Arch Bridge trailhead. It’s also a good choice if you like smaller, family-run stays with a bit of character.
- It’s not the best choice if you want sweeping mountain views from your room, luxury facilities or a completely flat walk from town, but for a cosy, convenient stay in Ella with lovely hosts, it worked really well for me.

Getting to Ella Ceylonka from the Ella Train Station
Ella Ceylonka is set just off Ella–Passara Road, around a short 5-minute tuk-tuk ride from Ella Train Station, which makes it an easy place to reach if you’re arriving by train from Kandy.
I’d recommend taking a tuk-tuk from the station if you have luggage.
It’s not far, but the road turns slightly uphill as you get closer, and after a long train journey, this is one of those “save your legs for the pretty hikes” moments.
If you’re travelling light, you could walk from the station to Ella Ceylonka, especially if you want to get your bearings and pass through the main strip on the way.
For me, one of the biggest perks of staying here is that it felt close enough to Ella’s main street to be convenient, but still quiet enough once I was back at the guesthouse to get a peaceful sleep.

Checking in at Ella Ceylonka was easy, which fit the place’s overall atmosphere. On arrival, I had to fill in my passport details and was able to send a transfer via my WISE for payment.
I arrived on a rainy afternoon, just as a thunderstorm rolled through Ella, so my first few hours here were spent hiding from the rain rather than rushing back out into town.
The entrance to the guesthouse is through the small café, which made the place feel welcoming straight away – more like arriving at someone’s home than a formal hotel reception.
The hosts, two friendly brothers, were really chatty and warm, and that carried through the rest of my stay.

Accommodation Type
Ella Ceylonka is a simple guesthouse rather than a large hotel. It’s got charm, it’s colourful and with a relaxed boho-rustic vibe, it feels very laid-back.
For me, this was part of the appeal. The rooms are set back from the road around a small garden area, with little private patios where you can sit and chill.
Room Review: Deluxe Double Room with Private Bathroom
I stayed in one of the Deluxe Double Rooms, and while it wasn’t fancy, it had the easy, relaxed feel I really liked about the whole guesthouse.
The room felt bright and kind of beachy, even though we were tucked up in Sri Lanka’s hill country. I enjoyed the patio, where I sat and listened to the rain pour down one afternoon.
The room itself was spacious and tidy, with a private bathroom, hot water and a strong fan which was enough to keep me cool at night.
The room also had a few handy extras:

- Large bed with a mosquito net

Ella Ceylonka doesn’t have the sweeping hill views that some Ella stays are known for, but it does have a cosy little garden area that gives the guesthouse a homely feel.
It’s not the kind of stay where you’re going to sit gazing across the valley for hours, but it’s the kind of place where you can slow down with a cup of tea, listen to the birds and enjoy the quieter side of Ella.
For me, this was where the charm of Ella Ceylonka sat.

Breakfast at Ella Ceylonka is served in the small café at the front of the accommodation.
I liked that it didn’t feel like a stiff hotel breakfast setup. It was more of a cosy little corner where you could sit with tea, food and that slow Ella morning feeling before heading.
The food was fresh and varied, with options like fruit, eggs, avocado toast and pancakes.
One thing I really appreciated was that my hosts prepared my breakfast as lunch because I was leaving very early the next morning.
It’s a small thing, but those are the details that make it memorable. Breakfast highlights include:

Hosts And Hospitality
The hosts were one of the loveliest parts of staying at Ella Ceylonka.
I understood that the guesthouse is run by two brothers, and they were really friendly, chatty and easy to talk to – one of them even played guitar for me.
They were happy to offer local tips, help with transport and make the stay feel easy, which is exactly what you want when you’re juggling hikes and onward travel plans.
How they prepared my breakfast as lunch because I was leaving early the next morning was kind, and it was very much the kind of thing that makes me want to return to an accommodation.
The rooms are simple, and the views aren’t the big selling point, but the warm welcome and easy atmosphere made it somewhere I’d happily recommend.
Facilities And Extras
Ella Ceylonka is a simple guesthouse, so don’t expect loads of hotel-style facilities, but it does have the main things you need for a comfortable stay in Ella.
The room itself had a few useful extras too, which made it feel practical for a short stay.

For me, the best “extra” was about how easy the stay felt. The hosts were helpful, the café food was good, and I had everything I needed.
Accessibility
Ella Ceylonka is close to Ella town and easy enough to reach by tuk-tuk, but it’s worth knowing that this isn’t a step-free guesthouse.
From the main road, there are steps up to the café area, which also serves as the entrance to the accommodation.
From there, the rooms are set further back through the garden, with an uneven path and a few more steps leading up to the raised rooms.
It’s not a huge staircase or a difficult climb, but there are steps in several places, and the garden path isn’t completely smooth.
I found it fine during my stay, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re travelling with very heavy luggage, have mobility issues or struggle with uneven ground.

Things To Do Nearby
The location makes a good base for exploring the main sights around Ella, especially if you’re planning a mix of hiking, viewpoints and a few slower moments in town.
Some of the best things to do nearby include:
- Ella Rock: one of the best hikes in Ella, with sweeping views over the highlands. This was one of the main reasons I wanted to stay in Ella in the first place.
- Nine Arch Bridge: the famous railway bridge surrounded by jungle and tea fields. Go early if you want it to feel a little less hectic.
- Little Adam’s Peak: an easier hike than Ella Rock, but still with beautiful views.
- Demodara Railway Loop: for something a little more offbeat, I’d also recommend walking from Nine Arch Bridge to the Demodara Railway Loop.
- Ravana Falls: easy to visit from Ella, although it can get busy.
- Ella town cafés and restaurants: the main street has plenty of places to eat, drink and recover after hiking.

Yes, I think Ella Ceylonka is worth staying at if you’re looking for a friendly, relaxed and well-located guesthouse in Ella.
