7BD Surf House in Sri Lanka, also known as Seven Black Diamonds, was my first stay in Ahangama.
I arrived after my safari transfer from Ella and Udawalawe, still dusty, slightly tired and ready to swap mountain air for beachy, boho surf vibes.ย
Set just outside the main stretch of town, 7BD felt more tucked away than centrally located, with a small pool, relaxed communal spaces, and simple yet stylish rooms.
Iโll be honest, it wasnโt quite the sociable surf-house stay I had imagined, but I did find it comfortable, calm and easy to settle into.
Hereโs my honest review of 7BD Surf Camp, including what I liked, what Iโd keep in mind, and who I think itโs best for.

Quick Overview: 7BD Surf House in Sri Lanka

If youโre looking for a boutique-style surf stay in Ahangama with a pool, simple rooms and the option to book surf packages, 7BD Surf Camp could be a lovely choice.
I think it works best for travellers who want a quieter base, especially if youโre planning to surf or hire a scooter.
- Vibe: Chilled boutique surf lodge with boho details, a small pool and relaxed communal spaces.
- Best for: Surfers, couples, digital nomads and travellers who want a quieter stay outside the main Ahangama strip.
- Location: Just outside central Ahangama on the south coast, around a 15-minute walk into town, or an easy scooter/tuk-tuk ride.

๐ My top pick >> Explore Koggala Lake via boat and visit Cinnamon Island. This is one of the best tours to slow down, get off the beach for a few hours, and see a greener side of Ahangama.
My thoughts
Surfboards strapped to scooters, little cafรฉs hidden behind palm trees, and that easy feeling that youโve slipped into somewhere made for slow mornings and ocean days; Ahangama has this salty, sun-bleached kind of energy that sneaks up on you.
I enjoyed my room at 7BD Surf Camp and felt comfortable there, but I think itโs best suited to surfers, couples or travellers who want a quiet, boutique stay rather than a buzzing hostel atmosphere.
If youโre still deciding whether Ahangama is the right base for you, Iโd also read my honest guide onย whether Ahangama is worth visitingย before booking.
My top tip: Hire a scooter if you stay here. The walk into town is doable, but in the Ahangama heat, a scooter or quick tuk-tuk makes life much easier.

How To Get To 7BD Surf House From The Airport Or Station

7BD Surf House in Ahangama is on Sri Lankaโs south coast, slightly outside the main town centre.
If youโre coming from Colombo Airport, the easiest option is a private transfer, especially if youโre arriving late or carrying lots of luggage.ย
The cheaper option is to travel into Colombo and continue by train or bus along the coast, but it does take more time and effort.
If youโre arriving by train, Ahangama Railway Station is the closest stop. From there, Iโd recommend taking a tuk-tuk to the accommodation rather than walking with bags in the heat.
The walk from 7BD Surf House to Ahangama town takes around 15 minutes.
Itโs easy, but hot, so Iโd recommend hiring a scooter or using a tuk-tuk if youโre not comfortable walking in the heat.
I arrived after my early morning Udawalawe safari transfer from Ella, so by the time I reached Ahangama, I was very ready for beach mode.
If youโre thinking of doing the same route, my Udawalawe National Park tips guide covers what to know before adding the safari stop, including timing, packing, sightings and a few small things I wish Iโd checked before going.

Check-In & First Impressions

I arrived at 7BD Surf House at around 1 pm, fresh from my early morning Udawalawe safari transfer from Ella, so I was very ready to drop my bags, shower and officially enter south coast mode.
I did have to wait about an hour before I could check in, which I found a little odd as the accommodation seemed pretty empty at the time.
It wasnโt a huge problem, but my journey was long and I was definitely hoping for an immediate check-in.
That said, the wait gave me time to speak with one of the owners. At first, she seemed a little reserved, but she soon warmed up and ended up being really helpful.ย
She gave me a few local suggestions and helped organise a scooter for the next few days, which made staying here much easier.
My first impression was that 7BD Surf House had a lovely little boutique surf-lodge feel.
It was quiet, clean and stylish, with a small pool, tropical plants, relaxed communal areas and that boho, barefoot design that feels very fitting for Ahangama.
Other guests seem to mention the same things quite often, too: friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere, outdoor showers, and a cosy surf camp feel.

Why I Booked 7BD Surf House in Sri Lanka

I booked 7BD Surf House because I wanted to try a smaller, surf-style stay in Ahangama rather than a big hotel or busy guesthouse.ย
The photos looked stylish and relaxed, with a pool, boho rooms and that easy south coast feel I was hoping for after a few full-on days in the highlands.
I also thought it might be a little more sociable. As itโs a surf house, I expected there to be a few people around, maybe travellers chatting over breakfast or hanging by the pool after a surf lesson.ย
In reality, it was very quiet when I stayed, but I do think that was partly because I visited in October, which is still shoulder season in Ahangama.
I wasnโt there to surf, so I booked it more as a comfortable base than a full surf-camp experience.ย
If you are coming to Sri Lanka specifically to learn to surf, though, I can see why 7BD Surf House would appeal โ it feels more personal and boutique than a big organised surf camp.
I was using Ahangama as my south coast base, and if youโre planning something similar, my 4-day Ahangama itineraryย gives you a good balance of beaches, cafรฉs, day trips, and slow mornings.

Who 7BD Surf House Is For / Who Itโs Not For

I think 7BD Surf House is best for travellers who want a quieter, boutique-style surf stay rather than a big, busy accommodation.
It has that relaxed Ahangama feel, but itโs still small and personal, which I liked.
Itโs a good fit for:
- Surfers or if youโre looking to book a surf and stay package
- Couples who want somewhere calm and stylish
- Digital nomads who need decent Wi-Fi and quiet spaces to work
- Travellers with a scooter who donโt mind being slightly outside town
- People who prefer smaller, more personal stays over large surf camps
It might not be the best choice for:
- Solo travellers hoping for a very social hostel vibe
- Anyone who wants to be right in the middle of Ahangamaโs main cafรฉ strip
- Travellers who donโt want to use tuk-tuks or rent a scooter
- People who prefer hotel-style facilities and lots of food options on-site
- Anyone who doesnโt like open-roof or semi-outdoor bathrooms
For me, it was a comfortable and pretty place to stay, but not the most social. If youโre coming in high season or youโre booking as part of a surf package, I imagine the atmosphere feels a lot livelier.

Accommodation Options At 7BD Surf House

7BD Surf House is a small boutique-style stay rather than a huge surf camp, which is part of its appeal.
There arenโt loads of rooms, so it feels more personal and low-key, especially if you prefer somewhere that doesnโt feel too busy or overly organised.
It has a mix of private rooms and shared options so that it can work for solo travellers, couples and surfers on longer stays.
Room Types
- Double Rooms: Best for couples or travellers who want more comfort and privacy. I stayed in a double room with a private bathroom, and it felt clean, secure and easy to settle into after a long travel day.
- Single Rooms: A good option for solo travellers who want their own space without booking a larger room. I didnโt stay in one personally, but this would suit someone who wants privacy.
- Dorm Rooms: Best for budget travellers or surfers who are happy with a more communal set-up. I imagine these would feel much livelier in high season when more people are staying.
- Surf & Stay Packages: A good choice if youโre coming to Ahangama specifically to surf and want accommodation and lessons organised together. I didnโt book a surf package, so I canโt comment on the coaching, but the set-up feels geared towards this kind of stay.

Insider tip: If youโre booking 7BD Surf House mainly for the social surf-camp feel, Iโd try to visit in high season. When I stayed in October, it was very quiet, so the atmosphere felt more peaceful than social.

Rooms & Sleep Quality

I stayed in a double room on the first floor. It was simple, clean and comfortable, with a proper double bed, air con, shelves and space to hang clothes. Nothing felt overdone, but it had enough boho detail to feel warm and stylish rather than plain.
- Space & bed: Comfortable double room with enough space for a short stay.
- Climate: The air con worked well, which I was very grateful for in Ahangamaโs heat.
- Storage: Shelves and hanging space made it easy to unpack a little.
- Noise: Very quiet when I stayed, although this was partly because there were hardly any other guests.
- Extras: No tea or coffee facilities in the room, which I did miss slightly.
- Security: I felt safe and secure in the room and around the property.
I slept well here. The room wasnโt fancy in a luxury hotel way, but it did exactly what I needed: cool, clean, quiet and comfortable.
Other guests also seem to praise the clean rooms, relaxed atmosphere and outdoor shower set-up, which matched my experience overall.
Bathroom

The bathroom was nice, although a little worn. It had an open-roof design, which gave it a slightly Bali-esque, tropical feel, with large plants in the corners (needing some love) and a private outdoor-style setup.
I personally liked it. It made the room feel a little more boutique and characterful, rather than just another plain guesthouse bathroom.
Everything felt clean and easy to use during my stay; the tap was a little leaky.
That said, open-roof bathrooms wonโt be for everyone. If you prefer a fully enclosed hotel-style bathroom, or youโre visiting in wetter weather, itโs something to keep in mind.ย
A few guest reviews also mention the outdoor bathroom style, mostly positively, although itโs definitely a personal preference thing.
For me, it worked well and felt very in keeping with Ahangama: relaxed, tropical and just a little bit barefoot.

Accessibility

7BD Surf House is quite a small, boutique-style property, so I wouldnโt describe it as the most accessible stay in Ahangama.
My room was on the first floor, so there were stairs involved. Iโm not sure whether there are ground-floor rooms available, so itโs worth checking before booking if stairs are an issue for you.
The location is also something to think about. Itโs around a 15-minute walk into Ahangama town, and while the walk is flat, it can feel hot and exposed during the day. I found the stay much easier once I had a scooter.
For me, 7BD Surf House works best if youโre fairly mobile, happy to use tuk-tuks, or comfortable renting a scooter to get around.ย
If you want everything right outside your door, Iโd probably look closer to central Ahangama or Kabalana Beach.

Accommodation Amenities

7BD Surf House has the basics youโd want from a small surf-style stay, without feeling overbuilt or too polished.ย
Itโs more of a relaxed boutique surf lodge than a full-service hotel, so Iโd come here expecting comfort, simple facilities and a chilled base rather than loads of extras.
The main amenities include:
- Swimming pool: Small but clean, and a nice spot to cool off after walking around Ahangama.
- Wi-Fi: Worked really well for me, so Iโd be happy to do a bit of work from here.
- Free drinking water: Always a win, especially in Sri Lankaโs heat.
- Scooter help: One of the owners helped me arrange a scooter, which made my stay much easier.
- Communal table: A large central table where guests can eat, work or hang out.
- Terrace seating: A peaceful first-floor terrace, good for reading or catching up on laptop bits.
- Surf packages: Available if you want to combine your stay with surf lessons.
- Small skate area: A fun little extra, especially if the place is busier.
When I stayed, the kitchen was only open for breakfast, so I wouldnโt book expecting lunch, dinner or a full cafรฉ-style set-up on-site.
That said, Ahangama has plenty of good cafรฉs and restaurants nearby, especially once you have a scooter.
Other guests often mention the pool, outdoor showers, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere as highlights, which feels about right.
For me, the amenities were simple but enough โ especially if youโre using 7BD Surf House as a calm base rather than somewhere youโll spend every hour of the day.
Surf Packages & Excursions

7BD Surf House offers surf and stay packages, so if youโre coming to Ahangama specifically to learn to surf or improve your skills, this is probably where the accommodation makes the most sense.
I didnโt book a surf package myself, so I canโt personally comment on the lessons or coaching.
Instead, I used 7BD more as a comfortable base while exploring Ahangama, cafรฉs and the surrounding beaches.ย
But from the set-up, it definitely feels geared towards travellers who want surfing to be part of their stay rather than just something they do once on the side.
The location works well for this too, as Ahangama has several surf spots nearby, and Kabalana Beach is only a short scooter or tuk-tuk ride away.
For me, I think I would have got more out of 7BD Surf House if Iโd been surfing.
As a non-surfer, I still had a nice stay, but I felt like I wasnโt fully using what the place was built for.
๐ BOOK: Have a look at the latest surf and stay packages on the official 7BD Surf Camp website.
Facilities & Common Areas

The common areas at 7BD Surf House are small but nicely put together.
Itโs not a huge property, so everything feels quite compact and easygoing, but there are enough shared spaces to sit, work, read or hang out if there are other travellers around.
The pool area is probably the main feature. Itโs not massive, but it was clean, pretty and surrounded by greenery, which made it a nice spot to cool off after being out in Ahangamaโs heat.
Thereโs also a small skate area, which adds to the surf-lodge feel.
Inside, thereโs a large central table where meals and co-working seem to happen. I liked this set-up, especially as the Wi-Fi worked well.
Upstairs, thereโs also a terrace with seating. This was one of my favourite little corners, and it was a lovely spot to read, do some work or just sit with a coffee if youโve got a slow morning.
Overall, the facilities are simple but stylish. I think theyโd feel much more lively in high season, when there are more guests using the pool, terrace and shared spaces.
Breakfast At 7BD Surf House

I didnโt actually have breakfast at 7BD Surf House, mainly because I wanted to get out and try the cafรฉs in Ahangama.ย
The food scene is one of the best parts of staying on this stretch of the south coast, so I was very much in my cafรฉ-hopping era here.
When I visited, the kitchen seemed to be open for breakfast only, so I wouldnโt book expecting full meals throughout the day.ย
This wasnโt a problem for me, but itโs worth knowing if you like having lunch or dinner available where youโre staying.
That said, other guests seem to speak really highly of the breakfast, with several mentioning fresh fruit, eggs, roti and friendly service.
So while I canโt personally review it, it does sound like breakfast is one of the things 7BD Surf House does well.
For me, I preferred heading into town for coffee and brunch, but if youโre having a slower surf morning, breakfast at the accommodation could be a lovely easy option.
Best Tours & Excursions In Ahangama

One of the best things about staying in Ahangama is that it makes a really easy base for exploring Sri Lankaโs south coast.ย
Youโve got surf beaches, lake trips, old colonial towns, creative workshops and little beach-hopping adventures all within fairly easy reach.
If youโre staying at 7BD Surf House, Iโd focus on tours and activities that fit the area rather than big full-day missions every day.ย
Ahangama is best when you leave some space for slow mornings, cafรฉ stops and spontaneous scooter detours.
A few tours and experiences worth looking at include:
- Koggala Lake boat tour: A relaxed trip through mangroves, little islands and cinnamon-growing areas nearby.
- Galle Fort day trip: Great for history, pretty streets, cafรฉs, shops and a completely different feel from Ahangama.
- Traditional batik workshop: A lovely creative activity if you want something different from beach days.
- Ahangama stilt fishing experience: Tourist-focused these days, but still an interesting way to learn about one of the south coastโs most famous traditions.
- Sri Lankan cooking class: A good one if, like me, half your travel memories involve food.
- South Coast tour: combines Handunugoda Tea Estate, Galle, Ahangama and Kosgoda in one day
If youโre planning a day trip, you can also read more about Galle Fort on the official Sri Lanka Tourism page for Galle Fort.

Whatโs Nearby 7BD Surf House?

7BD Surf House in Sri Lanka isnโt right in the middle of Ahangamaโs main cafรฉ strip, but itโs still a good base if you have a scooter or donโt mind using tuk-tuks.ย
From here, you can easily reach Ahangama town, Kabalana Beach, Lighthouse Ahangama and the south coastโs cafรฉ scene.
If you have a scooter, you can also use Ahangama as a base for easy south coast day trips, including Hiriketiya Beach and Dickwella Bay Beach.
The main thing to know is that I wouldnโt choose this stay expecting everything to be on your doorstep.
Itโs better if you want somewhere quieter and youโre happy to move around a little during the day.
Nearby places worth adding to your map include:
- Ahangama town for cafรฉs, restaurants and shops
- Kabalana Beach for surf lessons and beach time
- Lighthouse Ahangama for sunset drinks
- Koggala Lake for an easy nature-focused trip
- Galle Fort if you want a longer half-day or day trip
For a fuller breakdown, Iโve written a guide to the best things to do in Ahangama.
End Note: Would I Stay At 7BD Surf House Again?
I would stay at 7BD Surf House again, but I think Iโd choose it for a slightly different kind of trip.
The room was clean, comfortable and secure; the bathroom had that lovely tropical open-roof feel, and the whole place was stylish without feeling too polished.ย
I also really appreciated how helpful the owner became once we got chatting, especially with organising my scooter.
That said, it wasnโt the most social stay for me. Iโd pictured more of a lively surf-house atmosphere, but because I visited in October, it was very quiet.ย
If youโre travelling solo and hoping to meet people, this is worth keeping in mind.
For surfers, couples or travellers wanting a quieter boutique base in Ahangama, I think 7BD Surf House in Sri Lanka could be a great little find.ย
For me personally, I preferred Mellow Hostel for the location and social feel, and Iโve shared that full experience in my Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka review.
