After a few nights at 7BD Surf House, I moved across town to Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka, just metres from Kabalana Beach, and honestly, I preferred it.
Not because it was perfect or fancy, but because it had the things I wanted most at that point in my trip. Things like a better beach location, activities, strong Wi-Fi, and a more social atmosphere without feeling chaotic.
Mellow Hostel is still more surf-town casual than polished boutique hotel, but that’s part of the charm and it fit my travel style perfectly.
Here’s my honest review of Mellow Hostel in Ahangama, including what I liked, what I’d book differently next time and who I think it’s best for.

Quick Overview: Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for a relaxed, social and well-located stay near Kabalana Beach, Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka is a great option.
It has more going on than a small guesthouse, but it still felt friendly, easy and comfortable rather than overwhelming.

- Best for: Solo travellers, surfers, digital nomads, backpackers and anyone who wants to be close to the Beach.
- Location: Near Kabalana Beach in Ahangama, just across the road from the sand, but still a scooter or tuk-tuk ride from Ahangama’s main café strip.
Pros
✅ Excellent location near Kabalana Beach
✅ Friendly, helpful staff
✅ Yoga, film nights, walking tours and other activities
✅ On-site café/bakery and breakfast available
✅ Strong Wi-Fi + co-working spaces
✅ Air con worked well + laundry service available
✅ Clean, colourful private rooms
Cons
❌ Still not right in Ahangama’s main strip
❌ My single room was fine, but I’d book a double room next time
❌ Better if you’re happy to use tuk-tuks or rent a scooter
❌ Hostel-style atmosphere may not suit travellers wanting a quiet boutique stay
🌟 My top pick >> Explore Koggala Lake via boat and visit Cinnamon Island. This is one of the best tours to slow down, get off the beach for a few hours, and see a greener side of Ahangama.
My thoughts
For me, Mellow Hostel was the better fit in Ahangama. I loved being so close to Kabalana Beach, and the whole place felt more open, friendly and easy to slot into as a solo traveller.
The staff were lovely, the Wi-Fi worked well, and the activity updates made it feel like there was always something going on if I wanted to join in.
It’s far from a luxury stay, and while my single room with private WC was absolutely fine, I’d personally book a double room next time for a bit more space and comfort.
My top tip: Book Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka if beach access and a more social set-up matter more to you than being right in central Ahangama. For me, the Kabalana location was the biggest win.
If you’re still getting your head around the area, my things I wish I knew before visiting Ahangama guide covers the practical bits I’d want a friend to know before booking.

How To Get To Mellow Hostel From The Airport Or Station

Mellow Hostel is in Ahangama, close to Kabalana Beach on Sri Lanka’s south coast.
If you’re coming from Colombo Airport, the easiest option is a private transfer straight down to Ahangama, especially if you’re arriving late or carrying lots of luggage.
The cheaper option is to travel into Colombo and take the train or bus along the south coast. It takes more time, but it’s doable if you’re travelling on a budget, and you’ll get some really nice views.
If you’re travelling down from the highlands, I’ve also written a full Ella to Ahangama guide to help you plan the route.
I arrived on the south coast after an Ella to Udawalawe safari transfer, which worked really well as a travel day. If you’re thinking of doing the same, my Udawalawe National Park tips guide covers what to know before adding the safari stop to your route.
If you’re arriving by train, Ahangama Railway Station is the nearest main stop. From there, I’d just grab a tuk-tuk (between LKR500-700) to Mellow Hostel rather than walking with bags in the heat.
Location-wise, Mellow was better for me than 7BD Surf House, because it’s basically across the road from Kabalana Beach. I’ve written a separate 7BD Surf House review too if you’re deciding between the two.
That said, you’re still not right in Ahangama’s main café strip – about a 15-minute walk into town – so I’d recommend hiring a scooter, but being that close to the beach was a big win for me.
Check-In & First Impressions

Checking into Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka felt easy and friendly from the start. After staying somewhere quieter first, I noticed straight away that Mellow had more going on.
When I arrived, the staff were really welcoming and helpful. They added me to a WhatsApp group where they shared updates about activities and other hostel plans, which I thought was a great touch.
My first impression was that Mellow Hostel felt bright, modern, casual and well set up for travellers.
There’s an on-site café and co-working space, garden space, outdoor seating and a nice social atmosphere, which worked better for me as a solo traveller.
It still felt relaxed rather than too full-on, though. I liked that I could join in if I wanted to, but also retreat to my private room when I needed a bit of quiet.

Why I Booked Mellow Hostel

Ahangama has a way of pulling you into its rhythm: salty hair, scooter rides, lazy café mornings and surfboards appearing in almost every direction.
I booked Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka because I wanted to try a different side of Ahangama after staying at the opposite end of town.
The biggest pull for me was the location. Mellow Hostel is right by Kabalana Beach, so instead of planning a beach trip, you can literally cross the road and be there.
I also liked that it had a more active hostel set-up, with yoga, film nights, walking tours and an active group chat for updates.
I love these new-age hostels that feel sociable, creative and well-designed, but long gone are the days of sharing rooms for me. Being in my 30s, having my own room and private bathroom is very much a non-negotiable now.
I wasn’t looking for a wild party hostel, either, but I did want somewhere that felt friendly and easy to meet people if I fancied being social.
For me, Mellow felt like the better match for that part of my Ahangama trip: beach close by, café on-site, helpful staff and enough activity without it feeling too intense. Plus, I had my scooter, so it didn’t matter that I was out of town.
If you’re planning a few nights in the area, my 4 days in Ahangama itinerary shows how I’d balance beach time, cafés, activities and day trips.

Who Mellow Hostel Is For / Who It’s Not For

I think Mellow Hostel is best for travellers who like the idea of a hostel, but still want a little comfort and breathing space.
It has that friendly, social feel without being a party hostel, which is exactly the balance I was after.
It’s a good fit for:
- Solo travellers who want an easy place to meet people
- Surfers who want to stay close to Kabalana Beach
- Digital nomads who need strong Wi-Fi and a relaxed work-friendly set-up
- Those of you who like organised activities, yoga, film nights and social plans
- Anyone who wants a hostel atmosphere but prefers booking a private room
It might not be the best choice for:
- If you want a quiet boutique guesthouse
- Anyone who wants to stay right in Ahangama’s main café strip
- People who don’t want to use tuk-tuks or rent a scooter
- If you prefer hotel-style service and rooms
- Anyone who really doesn’t enjoy hostel-style communal spaces
For me, Mellow was great because it gave me the best bits of a hostel – friendly staff, activities, social energy and a good beach location – without making me feel like I had to be “on” all the time.

Accommodation Options At Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka
Mellow Hostel has a mix of private rooms and dorms, so it works for different budgets and travel styles.
I liked that it still had hostel vibes, but with the option to have my own space, because honestly, that’s the balance I’m after these days.
Room Types

- Dorm Rooms: Best for budget travellers, surfers or anyone who wants the classic hostel experience. I didn’t stay in a dorm here, but if you’re younger, travelling solo or trying to keep costs low, this would be the most affordable option.
- Single Room With Private WC: This is what I booked. It was colourful, clean and bright, with enough space for one person, shelves, a wardrobe, air con and strong Wi-Fi. It worked well for a short stay, but I’d personally want a little more room next time.
- Double Rooms With Private WC: This is what I’d book if I stayed again. Best for couples, friends or solo travellers like me who want a bit more comfort while still getting the social side of the hostel.
👉BOOK: If Mellow sounds like your kind of stay: social, beachy and easygoing without being a party hostel, check the latest prices and room options here.
Insider tip: If you’re in your 30s, working while travelling or just past the dorm-room era, book a private room. You still get the hostel atmosphere, but you can disappear into your own space when you need a break.

Rooms & Sleep Quality

I stayed in a single room with a private WC, set back behind the main property. It felt secure, clean and easy to settle into, with enough space for one person and everything I needed for a few nights near Kabalana Beach.
- Space & bed: Compact but comfortable for one person. I’d choose a double room next time for more space.
- Climate: The air con worked well, which made a big difference in the south coast heat.
- Storage: Shelves and a wardrobe gave me enough room to unpack a little.
- Wi-Fi: Strong in my room, so it worked well for laptop time.
- Noise: The rooms are set back from the main property, so it felt calmer and more secure.
- Security: I felt safe here, both in the room and around the hostel.
Overall, my room wasn’t fancy, but it was pretty, clean, bright and practical. For a hostel stay, I thought it was a really good set-up.
Private WC / Bathroom

One of the main reasons Mellow Hostel worked for me was that I could still get the social atmosphere without giving up my own private space.
My single room came with a private WC and made the stay feel much more comfortable than a standard dorm set-up.
The bathroom set-up was simple with smooth concrete walls; it did the job. It felt clean, private and practical, which is really what I care about most in a hostel-style stay.

Accessibility

Mellow Hostel is fairly easygoing as a place to stay, but I wouldn’t describe it as a fully accessible accommodation.
My room was set back behind the main property, which made it feel more secure and peaceful.
There were no stairs as I was on the ground floor, but it’s worth checking directly with Mellow before booking if you need step-free access or a specific room layout.
Location-wise, I found it much easier than the 7BD Surf House because Kabalana Beach is just across the road. That was a huge bonus.
You don’t have to plan a big beach trip or organise transport every time you want a swim, surf lesson or sunset walk.

Accommodation Amenities

Mellow Hostel has more going on than a simple guesthouse. It still feels relaxed and casual, but there are enough facilities to make it easy to settle in for a few days rather than just sleep there and leave.
The main amenities include:
- On-site café/bakery: A really handy option for coffee, breakfast or an easy bite without having to go into town.
- Wi-Fi: Worked well for me, including in my room, which made it a good option for catching up on work.
- Co-working set-up: Mellow also has a more intentional co-working side, with high-speed fibre internet, a quiet workspace, printing, storage and café ordering available.
- Laundry service: Always useful when you’re travelling around and need an easy wash.
- Garden and terrace: Nice shared spaces for relaxing outdoors.
- Outdoor seating: The café area had outdoor seating with fans, which made it a comfortable spot to hang around.
- Indoor reception: There was also an air-conditioned indoor space with a few seats.
- Secure room area: All rooms are set behind the main property, which makes it feel a little quieter and safer.
For me, the amenities made Mellow Hostel feel much easier as a solo traveller.
It wasn’t just a bed near the beach; it felt like somewhere I felt comfortable, ask questions, join something if I wanted to, get laundry done, grab food and figure out my next plan without too much effort.
Activities & Hostel Events

Another thing I liked most about Mellow Hostel was that there was always something going on. It had that nice balance of being social, but relaxed enough that I could also do my own thing.
Activities can include things like:
- Yoga classes
- Film nights
- Walking tours
- Live music
- Social events
- Beach and surf-related activities
Mellow’s own website mentions that they also offer workshops and daily excursion arrangements, although I’d always check what’s running during your exact stay, as hostel schedules can change.
I didn’t join everything during my stay, but I liked knowing the option was there. It made Mellow feel much more open and easy.
👉 BOOK: I enjoyed this accommodation, and would stay here again. Check prices and availability here.
Facilities & Common Areas

Mellow Hostel also has many shared spaces, plenty of places to sit, and, overall, an easy energy, with people coming and going throughout the day.
The café area was one of the main communal hubs, with outdoor seating, fans and a relaxed place to sit with a drink or something to eat.
The air-conditioned reception was useful when the heat started doing the absolute most.
There’s a proper co-working element here, which makes sense for Ahangama. It’s one of those places where half the travellers seem to be surfing in the morning and opening their laptops by lunchtime.
Mellow felt like somewhere I could actually get a bit of work done rather than balancing my laptop on a wobbly hostel bunk.
Around the property, there’s a garden, terrace, lounge space, outdoor fireplace and games room, plus live music and events depending on what’s on during your stay.
For me, the common areas made Mellow feel friendly without being overwhelming.

Breakfast & Café At Mellow Hostel

One thing I really liked about Mellow Hostel was that breakfast was included. It made the stay feel easy, especially on my first morning when I didn’t want to immediately figure out where to go for breakfast and coffee.
Breakfast at Mellow was exactly the kind of laidback breakfast I like. There are options; I chose the smoothie bowl with fruit, granola and yoghurt, and I sat with my laptop nearby, slowly waking up.
There are also gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options, which is handy if you don’t want to head into Ahangama town every time you need food.
Insider tip: The official Mellow café page says the café is open Monday to Sunday from 7 am to 9.30 pm.
I still went out to explore some of the best cafés in Ahangama because that was half the reason I loved this part of Sri Lanka. But having food and coffee available on-site was a big bonus, especially if you want a slow morning before activities.
For me, the café helped Mellow feel more like a place I could properly hang out, not just somewhere to sleep.
Best Tours & Excursions In Ahangama

One of the best things about staying at Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka is that you’re already close to one of the area’s main surf beaches, so I’d lean into easy south coast activities rather than packing every day with huge excursions.
If you’re staying here, a few tours and experiences worth looking at include:
- South Coast tour: combines Handunugoda Tea Estate, Galle, Ahangama and Kosgoda in one day.
- Koggala Lake boat tour: A relaxed trip through mangroves, little islands and cinnamon-growing areas nearby.
- Galle Fort day trip: Perfect if you want old streets, colonial architecture, cafés, shops and a break from the surf-town feel.
- Ahangama stilt fishing experience: It’s more tourist-focused now, but still an interesting way to learn about one of the south coast’s most recognisable traditions.
- Sri Lankan cooking class: Always a good idea in my opinion, especially if your trip memories are mostly built around food like mine.
- Traditional batik workshop: A lovely creative activity if you want something different from beach days
If you’re planning a day trip, you can also read more about Galle Fort on the official Sri Lanka Tourism page for Galle Fort.
Pro tip: Mellow itself also has activities and events, so I’d check with the hostel before booking too much externally.

What’s Nearby Mellow Hostel?

Mellow Hostel’s biggest win is its location near Kabalana Beach. You can literally cross the road and be by the sand.
Since you’re not in Ahangama’s main strip, I’d use tuk-tuks or hire a scooter if you want to explore properly. But for beach access, surf lessons and slow mornings by the sea, the location is excellent.
If you have a scooter, you can also use Ahangama as a base for easy south coast day trips, including Hiriketiya Beach and Dickwella Bay Beach.
Nearby places worth adding to your map include:
- Kabalana Beach for surfing, beach walks and easy ocean time
- Ahangama town for cafés, restaurants and shops
- Lighthouse Ahangama for sunset drinks
- Koggala Lake for a relaxed half-day trip
- Galle Fort if you want a history-filled day away from the surf scene

End Note: Would I Stay At Mellow Hostel Again?
Yes, I would definitely stay at Mellow Hostel in Sri Lanka again. Out of the two places I stayed in Ahangama, this was the one that suited me better overall.
The biggest reason was the location. Being so close to Kabalana Beach made everything feel easier.
I also liked the social side of Mellow: the group chat, the activities, the friendly staff and the general feeling that I could join in if I wanted to.
My single room with a private WC was clean, bright, and comfortable enough for a short stay, but next time I’d book a double room with a private WC for a little more space.
That would be my ideal setup: a hostel atmosphere, a beach location, my own room, and a private bathroom. Very much my 30s travel era.
For solo travellers, surfers, digital nomads or anyone looking for a relaxed stay near Kabalana Beach, I think Mellow Hostel is a really solid choice.
