Is Jaco Worth Visiting?
Jack and I spend 10 days in Jaco. It was to be our final destination before flying back to the UK which had been strategically chosen, with some influence from visiting friends, for its vibrant party atmosphere.
As it turned out, we really didn’t do much partying and instead spent the last of our days relaxing by the beach, watching sunsets and drinking pina coladas. For us, the perfect end to an adventure-filled year of backpacking around the world!
However, Jaco is developed. It’s no longer a small beach town attracting lost souls and is instead the bustling centre of Costa Rica’s beach destinations. If it’s an off-the-beaten-path holiday spot you’re looking for, Jaco is not it.
Depending on where you stay in Jaco it can be a buzzing party town or a relaxed oasis. For us, we were pretty far from the centre of the strip and so managed to enjoy those peaceful days. Had we been in the middle, I think our initial party plan would have played out accordingly.
Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a bustling beach town full of top-notch restaurants, a lively atmosphere, a long sandy beach, breathtaking sunsets and easy access to activities and wildlife, Jaco is worth visiting.
What Did We Honestly Think Of Jaco?
Jaco is not normally the sort of place we would choose to take a trip. If given the choice between a busy beach town like Jaco or a smaller lesser-known spot, the latter will always come up trumps.
However, as circumstances were we needed somewhere close enough to the airport – Jaco is only an hour and a half away – easy to get to and which we could all enjoy. As I mentioned earlier, we had two friends joining us and they are not the sort to slum it in a little beach hut in the middle of nowhere…
With this in mind, Jaco was perfect. It had just the right amount of tranquillity that we didn’t feel overwhelmed but with fantastic access to the beach. The town centre was only a 25-minute walk or a short taxi journey away.
If you like things a bit quieter or visiting with a young family I would recommend choosing accommodation down the south end of the beach. If you want the buzz, stick to the centre. I’ve provided some options for accommodations below with this in mind.
We also noticed there was quite a young-adult crowd, with a few families about the place. The main strip, well Jaco really is just the main strip, is full of surfer shops, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, tattoo shops and tour offices.
You will find everything you need including supermarkets, banks and vehicle rental shops along this strip.
✅ Who Will Love Jaco? If you have a young adventurous soul and are visiting Costa Rica for the first time, planning to stay in one location; want day tours, beach days and looking for an upbeat party atmosphere, Jaco will be perfect for you and is worth visiting.

The Best Things To Do In Jaco
So now I hope you’ve worked out if Jaco is somewhere you’d like to visit but if you’re still not sure, let’s run through some of the best things to do. Hopefully, this will help you make a final decision as to whether Jaco will be your next holiday destination!
1. Lazy Beach Days
Jaco Beach is decent enough, it’s very long and has blackish sand. Depending on where you are on the beach it can be a little rocky in spots but in others it’s soft and fluffy.
We enjoyed taking the long walk along the beach into the centre of town, mind you, we did have to cross a river or two and Jack was adamant we were going to get attacked by a crocodile. We didn’t, obviously.
The beach is okay for sunbathing and if you’re searching for that sunkissed holiday look you’re going to love it. Many of the hotels, hostels, and guesthouses line the beach and provide sun loungers, bars and most also have their own pools overlooking the beach.
One thing to note is that the beach is tidal and so you will notice it going in and out. You can swim in the water however sometimes the waves/current is too strong that it might be safer to just have a paddle. That said, jumping into the waves is always fun and makes Jaco worth visiting!
Can you drink on the beach in Jaco?
Did you know that drinking alcohol on the beach in Jaco is permitted? It just means that you can enjoy your lazy beach days with a few cold bevvies while watching the surfers skim along the waves.
You won’t have to worry if the police are going to come and confiscate your drinks, which is always a little concern at beaches you’re not meant to drink but it also means that at sunset you’ll find small beach gatherings and a lively social scene.
However, if you’re travelling alone or after dark, exercise caution and don’t go to the beach alone and intoxicated.
2. Try Surfing
Known worldwide for its decent waves, we did try a spot of surfing while we were there having had some lessons previously. I would say that Jaco is a good place for surf lessons in general although on some days the waves were too big for beginners.
Surfing is a fun sport but it is hard to perfect and I think a lifestyle choice. It takes a year of constant surfing to get even marginally good. But if it’s your life then Pura Vida Baby, Jaco is a fun surfing spot.
Costa Rica as a whole is a superb country for surfing with many popular beaches and hidden coves to discover. If you’re a serious surfer there are better spots than Jaco, but for the likes of us, we found it to be suitable.
Lessons can get expensive, I’m not sure how much but from memory I think it was $20 an hour for board hire, no lesson. If it’s your first time you will need lessons.
3. Restaurants Galore
If you’re a foodie fan then you’re going to love Jaco. It’s one of the things that was a selling point for us and it didn’t disappoint. Costa Rican food is quite delicious but it does get repetitive, by that I mean; beans, rice, salad and a choice of meat is the go-to meal for any savvy backpacker.
It’s what Jack and I lived off for months and by the time we got to Jaco, we were ready to enrich our inner foody’s taste buds again. Ok, I think I’m being a little dramatic, but still, we did eat a lot from the sodas (local restaurants).
Anyway, back to Jaco and you’ll find the streets are packed with international eateries, as well as local spots. We settled on my favourite – Italian -many times, but also found a divine little seafood restaurant, a sushi spot, ridiculous burgers, Colombian arepas, sports bars and a steak house.
All in all, we were fully satisfied by the end and I doubt you will have any issues finding somewhere to eat in Jaco either. Prices range from the cheapest of meals at sodas for around $5 to anywhere above. A top-end restaurant will cost the same as it would back home, think $30 dollars per person with a drink.
4. Wildlife Tours
Costa Rica is known for its wildlife and attracts many nature enthusiasts. In fact, the top reason for visiting Costa Rica is to immerse yourself in its wonderful national parks, cloud forests, tropical beaches and endless exoticness.
So, it’s only obvious that your trip to Jaco will include venturing into the jungle to witness some of the country’s most famous wildlife. You’re bound to see at least a toucan, parrots, hopefully, a sloth, monkeys and possibly crocodiles on any jungle expedition.
If you want to ensure you do, there are a handful of animal sanctuaries within travelling distance from Jaco otherwise the best place for pristine nature trails is Carara National Park. It’s only 30 minutes away and with a $10 entrance fee, it’s one of the best things to do in Jaco.
You’ll see lots of wildlife at Carara National Park, especially lizards. It’s also possible to visit the park with a guide, which is something we recommend since spotting wildlife can be hard. The guides are knowledgeable and will be able to point out the wildlife you might otherwise miss.
However, with all the above in mind, Jaco itself is limited to wildlife encounters as it is highly developed. You will need to venture to the national parks, saying that we did see a field full of iguanas while in Jaco.
5. Bird Watching In Costa Rica
Costa Rica has many beautiful and rare birds that bird watchers flock to the country for…did you like that pun?! Going on a bird-watching tour is a fulfilling activity whether you’re an enthusiast or not.
⭐ Pro tip >> I highly recommend a bird-watching and photography tour, most national parks will offer something along these lines and you’ll get a hotel transfer included with a half-day or full-day tour with an experienced guide.

Experienced guides provide instruction and equipment to ensure a safe and thrilling experience for all. Canyoning tours in Jaco offer varying levels of difficulty, so you can choose a tour that matches your skill level and comfort level with heights.
Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to see breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and enjoy refreshing dips in natural pools.
⭐ Pro tip >> Canyoning in Jaco: Canyoning in Jaco is a perfect activity for adventure-seekers and nature lovers who want to push their limits and experience the beauty of the Costa Rican wilderness.
11. Day Trips To…
Because of Jaco’s location, it’s possible to go on day trips to some exciting places.
12. Manuel Antonio
Manuel Antonio National Park is just a short drive south of Jaco, Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the country’s most popular national parks, known for its stunning beaches, abundant wildlife, and hiking trails it’s worth visiting.
A guided tour enriches your experience in Manuel Antonio National Park by providing information about the park’s plant and animal life and expert navigation between the park and your regional hotel.
⭐ Pro tip >> Manuel Antonio National Park Adventure: A guided tour enriches your experience in Manuel Antonio National Park by providing information about the park’s plant and animal life
13. Carara National Park
Located just north of Jaco, Carara National Park is another national park worth visiting as a popular birdwatching destination and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including scarlet macaws, monkeys, and crocodiles.
⭐ Pro tip >> Carara National Park: Visit Carara National Park on this 6-hour tour from Jaco. Nature lovers will delight in the variety of Costa Rican wildlife in the park
14. Tortuga Island

15. Isla Damas Mangrove

⭐ Pro tip >> Damas Island Mangrove Kayaking Tour: This is the perfect way to experience this diverse nation’s incredible wildlife and learn more from your expert local guide.
16. Chase Waterfalls
Although there are no waterfalls within walking distance from Jaco, you can easily plan a day trip to visit one nearby. There are two beautiful waterfalls worth visiting and within easy reach of Jaco: Bijagual Waterfall and Nauyaca Waterfalls.
17. Bijagual Waterfall
Located just a short 45-minute drive north of Jaco, Bijagual Waterfall is a stunning waterfall that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding rainforest. You can visit it with a guide or unguided, the entrance fee is $20 and you’ll be given walking sticks and a map.
⭐ Pro tip >> Bijagual Waterfall Horseback Riding: Enjoy one of the tallest and least explored waterfalls in Costa Rica, riding on well-trained horses.
18. Nauyaca Waterfalls
These beautiful waterfalls are located about 1.5 hours southeast of Jaco, but the trip is well worth it. The falls feature two tiers, with the lower tier being a popular swimming spot. Once you arrive at the park’s entrance, there are multiple options for getting to the falls.
One is a 40-minute hike, the other is horse riding and the easiest is hopping in the 10-seater open truck they have right from where you buy the tickets. The difference in price was $10 for walking pp and $32 pp for the truck.
⭐ Pro tip >> Waterfalls Adventure From Jaco: Explore off-the-beaten-track in a 4×4, stopping along the way to marvel at waterfalls, trek through the rainforest, and cool off in natural swimming holes. Lunch is included.
19. Beach Bars & Nightlife
Lastly, we come to the nightlife and spirited social scene that Jaco Beach experiences. It is not a quiet beach town, instead you’ll find endless bars and clubs along the strip.
During the daytime, popular spots along the beach fill up with tourists enjoying the sun with a cool cocktail in hand.
The beach is lined with funky drinking spots, either independent bars or attached to a hotel. If you buy a drink you can use their facilities. The vibe is lively and fun, we much prefer day drinking to the night scene but if you want to go out clubbing, Jaco is the spot that’s worth visiting.
Come evening and the crowd swings to happy larry tourists slightly sunburnt and still going from their day of drinking on the beach. The clubs fill up and the music starts blaring some upbeat reggaeton dance track that just makes you want to sway your hips.
In truth, we ventured out once after our meal and ended up sitting outside some club watching the hordes of, interestingly dressed, shall we say, people filtering through. It was eventful in itself and after a few drinks decided to call it a night.
I think by that point we were totally exhausted.
What Is Jaco Costa Rica Known For?
Hopefully I’ve enlightened you by now and you guys know what Jaco is so loved for and why it’s worth visiting but while we’re here let’s just quickly summarise all the above. Jaco is known as a popular beach town in Costa Rica about 1.5 hours away from the capital and international airport.
It’s famous for its long sandy beach (4km to be exact) and surfing which attracts a lot of beach lovers and surfers alike. The beach is facing west so it’s also known to have epic sunsets.
The town is a hub for party-goers and adventure enthusiasts with easy access to some of Costa Rica’s most famous national parks. If you love wildlife, Jaco is a good base to explore the jungle and if you’re looking for good food, a lively atmosphere and boutique shops Jaco has it all.
The town is a fun and vibrant tourist destination in Costa Rica and popular among first-time travellers to the country. It has a wide variety of accommodations to suit most budgets and is perfect for young adults and families with teenagers.
IS JACO WORTH VISITING?
When Is The Best Time To Visit Jaco
Jaco has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons – the dry season (December through April) and the rainy season (May through November). The dry season is the most popular time to visit, with warm, sunny weather and less rainfall. However, this is also the busiest time of year, and accommodations and activities can be more expensive.
If you’re looking to go surfing Jaco is best from May to November, when the waves are larger and more consistent. However, the weather can be more unpredictable during this time, with more rainfall and higher humidity.
If you are interested in wildlife viewing, the best time to visit Jaco is during the dry season when animals are more active and easier to spot.
One thing you might be worried about is the crowds. Jaco is busiest during the dry season, particularly during Christmas and New Year’s. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, you may want to consider visiting during the rainy season, when there are fewer tourists and lower prices.
Therefore, if you want warm, sunny weather and a lively atmosphere, dry season may be the best time for you. However, if you prefer lower prices and quieter surroundings, the rainy season may be a better choice.
How Do You Dress In Jaco?
Jaco is a beach town on the Pacific coast, the climate is tropical and is generally always hot. You will need loose clothing, open footwear, sunglasses and a hat to ensure you remain comfortable.
Wearing dresses, shorts and skirts are your best options. Bikinis and swimwear are perfectly acceptable, there is no need to cover shoulders/knees for religious reasons but you might want a long-sleeved shirt to protect you from the sun.
Always wear suncream, preferably a reef-safe mineral-based sunscreen if you’re entering the ocean.
Getting Around Jaco
Jaco is very easy to navigate as it’s basically one long stretch of beach with a main strip running parallel. You’ll find lots of side alleys linking the beach and the main strip which provides easy access between the two.
It’s really not that easy to get lost and so exploring Jaco can be a fun activity.
Walking
The best way to do this is to walk around. The strip is full of shops and places to eat, if you’re looking for a tour you’ll find many, make sure you check out various places and compare not only price but quality too.
It’s possible to walk along the beach from one end of the town to the other, keep in mind you might need to wade across a river or two if the tide is in. If this concerns you, try and plan your walk at low tide or alternatively, walk along the road.
Some areas along the beach are paved, and there is a nice short shaded area towards the south end of the beach which has a few smaller beach bars with some seats out the front.
Walking through the main strip during the day or night, you’ll notice it’s always busy however we felt safe and the crowds didn’t concern us, just watch out for pickpockets.
Taxi
Other than walking you can use a local taxi to get you from A to B. However, unless you’re staying outside the main area (like us) there really isn’t much need for a taxi within Jaco itself.
For tours and excursions, transfers are typically included but if you’re venturing out on your own then we found the taxis to be relatively affordable. If you’re using a local taxi make sure you check the metre is working or better yet, agree on a price before you get in.
If you’re unsure about prices you could ask your hotel to provide a rough idea, but they might not know. It’s more likely they will be able to recommend the bus, which is always the most affordable transport option – unless you are in a group, then taxis become more viable.
That said, transportation costs can also add up if you plan to frequently take taxis, as they can become more expensive. In Jaco, there is also a higher rate during the evening than in the daytime.
Does Jaco Beach have Uber?
The great thing about Jaco…it does have Uber! Whoo. It’s great and is how we travelled home in the evening and when we were being too lazy to walk. That said, we could not always get an Uber and so sometimes had to rely on the local taxi.
The Uber was unreliable. It tended to be better going from the hotel to the strip but vice versa we always had issues. However, things may have improved as more people are choosing Uber to travel.
Renting A Car
If you can afford it then car rentals in Costa Rica are the way to go! You’ll be able to get around much easier especially if you want to go visiting places much further than Jaco it’s worth getting a rental.
You’ll also save money as you won’t need to go on as many day tours, you could opt for a private guide instead…once you arrive.
👉 Car Rental: DISCOVER CARS
We use DISCOVER CARS when looking for an overseas car rental. They compare hundreds of dealerships and have zero hidden charges.
Bus
As mentioned, the most affordable way to travel to sites outside Jaco is by bus. We arrived in Jaco by bus, and actually, I’m not sure how we did that as we came down from Nicaragua but managed to make it without transferring through San Jose.
We jumped off in the middle of nowhere with some vague instructions on how to find the next bus, crossed the motorway and by chance arrived at a stop just before a bus passing with Jaco on its front turned up.
Anyways, I doubt you will have such an experience as the buses in Jaco come regularly and you’ll not be travelling as far. Just make sure you have some cash to give them and your map open on your phone.
If the bus turns the wrong way jump off and head to the next stop on the right road.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF 12GO?
A great company to use to get around is 12Go. They aim to help travellers from around the world get from point A to point B trouble-free and with a high-quality service guarantee!
Do you Need A Sim In Costa Rica?
Depending on how long you’re in the country it might prove economical to get a local sim card. We had one for each country we visited, almost and was perfect for ensuring we were going the right way.
⭐ Pro tip >> If you’re going to be using your phone, don’t forget about overseas data roaming. You’ll get charged for using your data. Try Airalo’s eSIMs, and download a digital data pack.
Where To Stay In Jaco
We’ve made it to one of the best parts of booking a holiday! Well, for me anyways, I love searching for the best hotel deals, although generally, that’s just for you guys as we mostly stay in hostels. But, I also love searching for great hostel deals!
⭐ Pro tip >> As noted above I’ve found two accommodations for all three tiers, depending on location. Although we haven’t stayed in these hotels, I’ve researched the best-reviewed one for you using my personal knowledge to help you make an informed decision.

Luxury Suggestion: Club del Mar Oceanfront
Hotel Club del Mar is nestled between the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean, on the south end of Jaco Beach. Surrounded by tropical gardens, the resort offers an oceanfront pool and a spa.
Is Jaco Safe
I would say that Jaco is relatively safe, especially during the daytime. Although we had no issues we were travelling in a group of four and rarely ventured out too late.
Jack and I did walk back to the hotel after dark a couple of times and had no issues, however, if I was alone I would not have done so as we were quite far outside the main area.
Even though we consider Jaco safe and most visits are trouble-free, there have been incidents of violent crime against tourists. So, as with any destination, it’s important to take certain precautions and be aware of potential risks. Don’t do anything which feels unsafe.
Petty crimes, such as theft and pickpocketing, can occur in tourist areas, so it’s important to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid carrying valuables with you.
While the risk of violent crime is relatively low in Jaco, it‘s still important to be cautious, particularly at night. Stick to well-lit areas and avoid walking alone if possible.
The hurricane season usually runs from June to November. You should monitor local and international weather updates from the World Meteorological Organisation and the US National Hurricane Centre.
Costa Rica is considered safe but it’s also full of snakes and other creepy crawlies…
Is It Safe To Walk In Jaco At Night?
We didn’t have any issues. It’s generally safe to walk in the well-lit areas in the town centre at night, but as I said, I would avoid walking alone if possible. Stick to main roads and avoid dark, isolated areas.
It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or sense a potential danger, it’s better to be on the side of caution and avoid the area.
For safety and certainly, if you’re travelling alone I would recommend taking a licensed taxi or arranging for transportation through your hotel or a reputable company if you need to travel at night.
Can You Drink Tap Water In Jaco?
It seems like you can drink the tap water in Jaco, and most of Costa Rica. However, we never did and I would be a little careful if you have a delicate disposition.
We use our Grayl Water Purification bottle to filter all our water so we know we’re drinking safe filtered water all the time and not buying plastic bottles.
⭐ Pro tip >> We use the Grayl Water Purification Bottle: It’s a top-rated and best-selling water filtration and purification bottle for backpacking, hiking, camping, emergency prep and global travel.
Is Jaco In Costa Rica Expensive?
From our point of view, Jaco in Costa Rica is an expensive holiday destination. If you’re on a shoestring budget it’s best to avoid Costa Rica.
However, the cost of visiting Jaco can vary depending on your travel style, budget, and the season in which you visit. Generally speaking, Jaco can be more expensive than other areas of Costa Rica, particularly for tourists, as it is a popular beach destination.
It’s expensive for a number of reasons but overall it’s down to the higher labour costs and strict labour laws which drive up the prices of products and services compared to other countries in the region.
Costa Rica also uses the US dollar alongside its own currency which in itself results in higher prices for goods and services. The county also experiences a good economy and political stability which contribute to higher living costs.
Furthermore, since Costa Rica focuses on ecotourism this can make the cost of accommodation, tours and activities more expensive too. It does mean that you’ll be able to enjoy the country’s natural beauty without harming the environment or local communities though!
Accommodation
Accommodation in Jaco can be expensive, particularly if you are looking for a beachfront hotel or luxury resort. However, there are more budget-friendly options available if you are willing to stay a bit further from the beach.
Food & Drink
Food and drinks in Jaco can also be relatively expensive, particularly in Western-focused areas. However, there are many local restaurants and street food options which are more affordable. As I said, you can easily get a $5 meal from the local soda.
For The Budget Backpackers
I’ve noticed some people saying that Costa Rica can be a cheap destination, well these people are not budget backpackers. Jack and I travelled around Southeast Asia, South America and Central America on a tight budget. Costa Rica, Panama and Hawaii were by far the most expensive countries of them all.
We had a separate budget for Hawaii – that’s another ball game!
It’s true that there are certain ways of saving money and being budget savvy but that doesn’t mean the country is budget-friendly. It’s still possible to travel to Costa Rica on a budget by doing some research and making smart choices about where you stay, eat, and how you get around but the country is still expensive.
How Many Days Should I Spend In Jaco Costa Rica?
Ultimately, the amount of time you spend in Jaco depends on your travel style and budget. If you’re going to the beach town for a holiday and don’t plan to visit other locations you could easily spend an entire 2 weeks there.
Holiday-Makers
If you’re visiting for a holiday purpose like this and basing yourself in Jaco, I would say about 10 days is the minimum. In all honesty, unless it’s a weekend getaway I wouldn’t advocate a holiday for anything less than 10 days!
If your intention is to visit a variety of locations then you might want to spend only a few days in Jaco. It depends on what you plan to do there as well.
Jaco is a good base for visiting certain areas, such as Manuel Antonio National Park. It’s also a good spot to end your holiday due to its proximity to San Jose. There are plenty of activities and day trips to keep your days full but it is missing that laidback boho-casual vibe Jack and I enjoy so much.
Backpackers
If you’re backpacking, and don’t fancy going further south by your own means, then I would suggest 3 days in Jaco. A trip to Manuel Antonio should take up one of your days, you’ll want time for a lazy beach day or ATV adventure and you’ll need a day to recover from your wild night out!
Whatever you do, don’t visit Costa Rica without INSURANCE!
👉 Travel Insurance: SAFETYWING
Jack and I use SAFETYWING to book our travel medical insurance when we are overseas. It’s important to us as it ensures a safe trip.
✔️ Flexible, continuous coverage can be bought before you depart or at any point during your journey abroad.
✔️ Can be very affordable.
(High-risk sports activities not generally included – Check out World Nomads instead)
Are There Any Reasons Not To Visit Jaco?
While Jaco, Costa Rica can be a beautiful and exciting destination for some, there are some reasons why it may not be the best choice for everyone. Here are a few things you might want to consider.
Crowds
As I’ve said, Jaco is a popular tourist destination, particularly during peak season (December to April) and does become crowded. This means that the beaches, restaurants, and attractions can be very packed, which may not be enjoyable for everyone.
High Prices
As mentioned before, Jaco can be more expensive than other parts of Costa Rica, particularly for tourists. This can be a deterrent if you’re a budget-conscious traveller. However, if Costa Rica is somewhere you really want to visit, you can budget accordingly, as I do recommend visiting. We loved it.
Safety Concerns
While Jaco is generally considered safe, petty crimes such as theft and pickpocketing are common. It is important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night.
Limited Wildlife
While Costa Rica is known for its incredible biodiversity, the beaches and surrounding areas in Jaco may not offer as many opportunities to see wildlife as other areas of the country.
