We visited the peninsula in western Tuscany while exploring Italy in our campervan, and we had the best time, but we got into a few mishaps while we were there. 

We were about five weeks into our Italy road trip by the time we reached the peninsula, which is sort of more like an island. I was ready for the sea, a sun-kissed glow and some beach time. What we didn’t realise was just how rocky this little gem was!

In this guide, I’m sharing with you all the things I wish we had known before visiting Monte Argentario so you can plan for an incredible trip.

Is Monte Argentario Worth Visiting?

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of each thing I wish I had known before visiting Monte Argentario, you might be wondering if it’s worth visiting. 

The environment might sound a little harsh to you; it is rocky and dry, but I think Monte Argentario is 100% worth visiting. It’s a place with breathtaking scenery, hidden coves, and unique experiences. Even the central hub of Porto Santo Stefano is a picture-perfect Italian town, tumbling down the hillside in a hue of glimmering pastels.

However, it’s not going to be to everybody’s taste. You’ll have to enjoy hiking for sure, and if you’re hoping to find soft sandy beaches, you’ll be in for a shock! 

Nevertheless, Monte Argentario is a gorgeous place to visit with panoramic views and a fantastic addition to any Tuscan road trip, holiday or quick getaway. It’s also somewhere we found quite romantic, so if you’re travelling as a couple, I highly recommend adding it to your Italy bucket list.

Things To Know Before Visiting Monte Argentario 

After a week of beach hopping around the island, we left Monte Argentario with smiles on our faces and beautiful bronzed skin. I also felt surprisingly healthy since we did a lot of walking, and you will, too.

Here are all the things you should know before visiting the beautiful Monte Argentario.

1. Sea Shoes Are Essential

The number one thing to know when planning a visit to the island is to pack your sea shoes. We had forgotten, or I should say, we had forgotten where we had stored them and were going crazy trying to find them after rocking up to the first beach and realising seas shoes were essential!

• Sea Shoes | These are the ones we have, and they are great, super flexible and perfect for wading through the waters at Monte Argentario.

You’d think there weren’t so many places they could hide in a campervan, but you’d be surprised! After what felt like an hour of searching, we eventually found them stuffed in numerous bags in a bucket and behind Jack’s toolbox. 

Anyways, yes, sea shoes are essential for you to have a fun time at the beach. There are many rocks in the water, sea urchins, and the beaches themselves aren’t sandy but somewhat rocky and pebbled.

2. Pebbled Beaches

The pebbled beaches actually aren’t too bad. There are a few, such as Cala del Gesso (Google Maps) and L’Acqua Dolce (Google Maps), which have crushed seashells and small pebbles. However, it’s the others that can be problematic. 

With large rough-edged rocks and jagged boulders lining the beaches, finding a spot to settle without getting a stone stuck into your back is challenging. Although these beaches aren’t the most comfy, they offer the most captivating views and beautiful turquoise waters.

⭐ Pro tip >> It’s also worth knowing that some are scattered with seaweed washed up from the ocean, dried in the sun and perfectly squishy; don’t shy away from sitting on some if you see it.

3. Hard-To-Reach Beaches

Due to the topography of Monte Argentario, the beaches and coves outside the two main towns, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, can be tough to reach.

Located at the bottom of the cliffs, they are pretty remote. Vehicle access is restricted, with the majority requiring at least a twenty-minute downhill (and then uphill) walk.

While some trails have steps built into the rocks for easier access, others are unpaved and wild. We put on our hiking boots every time we ventured out as we could never be sure of the conditions; I recommend you do as well. 

You’ll need sturdy trainers, at the very least.

4. Hiking Will Be Required

One of the things to know before visiting is that Monte Argentario is a place for hikers and nature lovers. If you don’t like hiking or you’re after a relaxing holiday, then you might want to consider an alternative destination. 

The peninsula is perfect for hiking. There are viewpoints throughout the island, but the only way to reach the best ones is to hike. Whether it’s downwards towards the beaches or upwards to the panoramic spots, it’s important to know that you’ll be walking a lot during your trip.

That said, you don’t have to visit the coves, and there are places accessible at sea level, but the beauty of Monte Argentario is discovering these remote treasures. Plus, after the walking, reaching the destination is such a reward.

Did you know the highest peak in Monte Argentario is Punto Telegrafo? It’s a viewpoint at 635 metres (2,083 ft) above sea level and provides breathtaking panoramic vistas. If you’re keen to hike up, check out the All Trails App. We use it all the time, and it’s excellent for finding trails while overseas.

5. There’s Not Much Shade

One thing we did notice when we got to the shoreline was that there was hardly any shade. Monte Argentario is an arid place, and the beaches lack vegetation which can be used as shade. 

Personally, I prefer more tropical, lush destinations, such as Panama, but the mild climate and secluded shores won me over.

We had our beach umbrella with us, which made a huge difference. By pinning it in place using the rocks as support, we were able to stay out of the mid-day sun. If you’re not planning to book the sunloungers, it’s a good idea to pack something to use for shade.

6. Book Sunbeds In Advance

It’s great to know that there are sunbeds to rent on some of the larger, more popular beaches, but they fill up fast. One way to ensure you don’t miss out is to prebook your sunbed. 

To do this, you will have to call up the local lido and make a deposit, but it’s worth it to ensure you have a comfortable day.

Since we were visiting Monte Argentario during October, which is the off-season, we didn’t know the lidos were shut, so we couldn’t rent them. However, on Beach Le Cannelle (Google Maps), the residents were popping behind the lido and retrieving a sun lounger! 

We didn’t get one, but you might be able to grab one for the day.

7. Spiaggia Means Beach

Did you know the Italian word for beach is “Spiaggia”? You’ll see signs all along the trails directing you to the beaches, so it’s easy to find the coves. 

8. The Off-Road Experience

One of the biggest things to know before visiting Monte Argentario is that the east side of the peninsula has an unpaved section of road. The ring road which circles the island is brilliant because you can literally go all the way around, or so we thought.

Without doing any prior research, we didn’t think anything of it; on the map, it appeared to be a regular road. When we arrived towards the end of our road trip around the island and half ignoring the signs, we thought it was only a short distance and wouldn’t be too bad.

It wasn’t too far, in all honesty; however, our van is not built for off-road adventures. 

It was a scary 3.3 km of driving. We worried we would get a puncture or a rock would hit the water tank, which we had underslung beneath the chassis, as well as our gas tank. Loose stones were pinging up and hitting the van, and if we had gotten a puncture, getting it fixed along the road would have been a nightmare.

Luckily, and with some careful driving, we came out the other end unscathed. But this might not be the case for everyone.

⭐ Pro tip >> If you’re visiting a campervan, I highly advise you not to risk driving along this road. Monte Argentario isn’t large, and it’s easy to turn around and drive back around the island along a safe, less rugged road.

9. The Roads Are Narrow

Even if you’re not heading along this particular road, it’s also important to know that the roads in Monte Argentatio, and Italy in general, are ridiculously narrow. They meander along cliffs, wind through mountains and go up and down hillsides like nothing we’ve witnessed before.

It’s beautiful driving in Italy for this reason, and the peninsula is no exception; however, with cars tightly parked along already narrow streets and small roads leading to popular viewpoints, driving can be challenging. 

⭐ Pro tip >> You’ll need to be a confident driver or at least travel with someone who is, as the best and easiest way to explore Monte Argentario in a vehicle.

10. Rent A Small Car

With the above in mind, I recommend you hire a small car (or even a scooter) to explore. There really is no sense in having a large car; the perfect choice is Italy’s flagship Fiat 500!

When we rent cars, we use Discover Cars. It’s a third-party comparison company with great rates and the option for full coverage insurance. To get better prices, they partner with local car rental companies as well as larger organisations, which is great, but be sure to check the reviews on Google! 

11. Few Amenities

Another thing Jack and I noticed during our trip was that outside of the towns, there is little in the way of amenities. Luckily, we had our home with us and everything we needed, but this won’t be the case for many of you.

Therefore, you must take everything you need with you, including water and snacks, especially if you’re travelling during the off-season. All of the lidos and bars were closed when we visited. 

• Water Bottle | We always leave with our water bottle; it is our favourite.

⭐ Pro tip >> During summertime, there will be more venues open, including the lidos, but they can be pricey. Also, keep in mind that the more secluded locations won’t have a lido, and the ones that do aren’t always so accessible to the beach.

12. The Season Ends In September

The start of the season is officially in the middle of June, and it ends in September. That said, the shoulder seasons of late spring and early autumn are the best times to visit Monte Argentario.

May and June offer brilliant warm weather, as do September and early October. You’ll also find fewer crowds and cheaper accommodations; some activities will also be more affordable. 

However, for us, the biggest attraction is to enjoy the island without hordes of people clogging up the beaches, hiking paths and scenic points. The experience is much more intimate during this period, and you’ll be able to enjoy the natural, wild beauty of Monte Argentario fully.  

13. Feniglia Beach Is Stunning

Lastly, I wish we had known how perfect Feniglia Beach was going to be. We rocked up in our hiking boots, but this was the only beach where we didn’t need them. Remember this!

In my opinion, Feniglia is one of the best beaches in Tuscany. It’s a long stretch of land home to a sandy beach and connects Monte Argentario to the mainland. 

The beach is perfect. 

⭐ Pro tip >>During summer, it’s a lively hub with restaurants, bars and plenty of sun loungers to relax on. However, walk further south, and the shore becomes more natural and wild with fewer tourists, washed-up driftwood and idyllic views.

Top Tour To Know Before Visiting Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario isn’t as busy a tourist destination for foreign tourism as other places in Italy; however, many Italians visit, and it’s still a very popular spot during the summer period.

There are a number of tours. The best one will take you over to Isola del Giglio and/or Giannutri for a day trip.
