Legong is one of Bali’s most celebrated classical dances, believed to have grown out of the island’s royal court tradition in the 19th century.
It’s known for its intricate finger work, expressive eyes, and storytelling through movement, all accompanied by gamelan music.

Why I Think The Ubud Palace Legong Dance Show Is Worth It
I think the Ubud Palace Legong dance show is worth it because it’s such an easy way to experience a traditional side of Bali without needing to plan much at all.
Right in the centre of Ubud, it makes a really nice evening activity, whether you want to start the night with something cultural or end the day with music and movement.
What stayed with me most was the performance itself.
The costumes were incredibly detailed, the masks and make-up added so much character, and the dancers’ facial expressions made every scene feel full of meaning, even when I couldn’t fully follow the story.
I also loved the atmosphere created by the gamelan music slowly building before the dancers entered the stage.
That said, I do think it helps to go in with the right expectations.
Some dances were easier to connect with than others, and one of the longer performances did drag a little for me.
The seating is also quite simple, just rows of benches, so it’s not a luxury sort of experience.
But for 100,000 IDR, I still think this Ubud Palace dance show is well worth doing: it’s cultural, central, affordable, and a really memorable way to spend an evening in Ubud.

My Experience and What You Can Expect
We arrived just before the 7:30 pm start, which gave my friend and me just enough time to get settled before the performance began.
I’d bought my ticket online beforehand, though you can also buy Ubud Palace dance tickets at the door.
If you want peace of mind, I would still pre-book, especially during peak season.
When I visited, it was raining, so the show was held across the road rather than in the main palace courtyard. Even so, it didn’t take away from the evening at all.
The show lasted just over an hour and featured a series of traditional dances, each with its own mood, costume and character.
Some were softer and more graceful, while others felt bolder and more dramatic.
My favourite was the Baris warrior dance, as it was one of the easiest to follow and had such a strong presence on stage.
The only part I found a little long was the Legong Supraba Duta, but the rest held my attention really well.
What I enjoyed most was the detail, especially the costumes and the dancers’ facial expressions.
It’s one of those performances where even if you don’t fully understand every story, you still feel pulled into it.
