What to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka: 15 Best Experiences

There are the famous sights like Ella Rock and Nine Arch Bridge, but some of my favourite experiences were the quieter, lesser-known ones: walking all the way to Demodara, finding a peaceful forest monastery, and cooling off in natural pools after a long day of hiking.

In this guide, I’m sharing what to do in Ella, from the obvious highlights to the more offbeat experiences that made my time here so memorable.

1. Ride the Kandy to Ella train

One of the best things to do in Ella, Sri Lanka, actually begins before you arrive. 

The train from Kandy to Ella is an experience in itself, winding through emerald tea plantations, little villages and thick green hillsides that seem to roll on forever. 

This was my first glimpse of Ella, and it set the tone perfectly. 

After seven hours on the train, I arrived feeling tired but completely taken by the scenery I’d just travelled through. 

It’s one of those journeys that feels just as memorable as the destination, and for many travellers, it ends up being one of the real highlights of Sri Lanka.

2. Visit Nine Arch Bridge

If you’re deciding what to do in Ella, this is one of the obvious highlights, but it really is worth it. 

I set off around half eight in the morning and walked in via the tracks, which made the whole visit feel more adventurous. The approach was beautiful too, with open valley views, palms, jungle and hardly anyone around at first. 

By the time I reached the bridge, a few more people had gathered, but it still felt exciting rather than overwhelming. 

Then the train came through slowly, everyone shuffled to the sides, people waved from the windows, and the whole thing had such a fun, happy atmosphere that it was hard not to grin.

3. Hike Ella Rock

For sweeping highland views and a little more adventure, hiking Ella Rock is easily one of the best things to do.

I did this hike early in the morning without a guide, starting along the railway tracks before dropping into the valley, weaving through tea bushes and then climbing steeply through the forest to the top. 

It felt much more varied than I expected, and that final uphill stretch definitely got the blood pumping. 

I also loved that it didn’t just feel like a simple up-and-down walk; even on its own, it felt like a proper little adventure with changing scenery the whole way.

4. Continue to the Forest Monastery

If you’re looking for more unusual things to do around Ella, this was one of the most memorable detours I found. 

After Ella Rock, I carried on through the forest to a quiet monastery hidden in the hills, and it ended up feeling like a completely different experience from the hike itself. 

The walk there was peaceful, the setting was calm and, most unexpectedly, a monk invited us in for tea and biscuits and encouraged us to ask questions. 

It was such a gentle, human moment and one I really didn’t expect from a hiking day.

5. Cool off at the AMBA Estate natural pools

This was one of my favourite offbeat finds in Ella, and easily one of the most refreshing. 

After leaving the monastery and wandering through the woods in search of Upper Ravana Falls, I eventually reached the AMBA Estate but was told the waterfall had been closed. 

Instead, I was directed to natural bathing pools lower down the land, and they turned out to be tranquil, turquoise and completely empty.

Pro tip: I’d be careful not to treat them like a fully public attraction, though; it’s best to enquire at the estate first rather than just turning up, as they’re on private land and part of the AMBA Estate.

6. Hike Little Adam’s Peak

If Ella Rock sounds a bit too ambitious, Little Adam’s Peak is one of the easier hikes to do – it’s shorter, but still gives you lovely views across the surrounding hills. 

This is a good one if you want a scenic walk without committing half a day, and it works particularly well at sunrise or late afternoon when the light is softer. 

It’s also easy to combine with other attractions nearby, so if you are trying to fit a few classic sights into one day, this is one of the simplest wins in Ella.

7. Walk to Demodara Railway Loop

This was one of the most unexpectedly good things I did in Ella, and far fewer people seem to continue beyond Nine Arch Bridge. 

I walked straight along the railway tracks to Demodara and barely saw anyone on the way. 

The scenery was peaceful, with open valley views, jungle stretches, and monkeys in the trees; at times, I even thought the views were better than the approach to Nine Arch Bridge. 

At Demodara Station, I was stopped from walking the full loop itself, but the viewpoint and the little local train back to Ella made the whole outing feel wonderfully unique.

8. Tour Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory

If you want a break from viewpoints and railway walks, a tea factory tour is fun and educational. You’ll spend so much time travelling through tea country here that it’s nice to actually stop and understand what you’re looking at. 

A visit to Uva Halpewatte gives a bit more context to the landscape, with a chance to see how Sri Lankan tea is processed and, of course, try some too. 

It’s also a good choice if the weather turns or you just want something gentler after a couple of active days in Ella.

9. Take a day trip to Lipton’s Seat

If you have more time in Ella and want to get deeper into the hill country, A visit to Lipton’s Seat is a popular thing to do around Ella.

I actually looked into doing this independently while I was there, and it’s possible to make your own way by train to Haputale and then continue by tuk-tuk, which is a handy option if you don’t want a full tour. 

The views are meant to be the main draw here, along with the chance to see a different corner of Sri Lanka’s tea-growing landscape. It makes a great extra day if you want to venture a little further.

10. Go on an Udawalawe safari day trip

If you’re figuring out what to see in Ella beyond mountains and tea plantations, a safari is one of the best day trips you can add. 

I did this day trip as part of a transfer from Ella to Ahangama with a morning stop in Udawalawe. I liked this option because it made the journey feel more like part of the adventure than just a transfer day.

However, as a day trip, it’s a really good way to break up the hill-country scenery with something completely different. 

It’s one of those activities that works best if you start early, accept that it will be a full day, and go in expecting a bit of road time.

11. Stop at Ravana Falls or Diyaluma Falls

Ravana Falls is one of the easiest sights to add to your Ella itinerary, and while I wouldn’t build a whole day around it, it does make a good stop if you’re already out exploring. 

This is one of those classic top things to do in Ella, that works best when paired with something else, whether that’s Diyaluma Falls, a hiking day or another nearby attraction. 

It’s quick, scenic and simple to reach, so it suits travellers who want an extra stop without too much effort. Sometimes that’s exactly what a good travel day needs, rather than yet another heroic uphill slog.

12. Try the Flying Ravana Zipline

For something a bit different, the Flying Ravana Zipline is one of the more adventurous things to do in Ella. 

It’s a good option if you want a hit of adrenaline without committing to another long hike, and it pairs especially well with Little Adam’s Peak if you’re already in that part of Ella. 

I like that it adds a slightly more playful side to the usual Ella itinerary, which can otherwise become very viewpoint and track-heavy. 

Sometimes it’s nice to swap walking boots for a harness and just fling yourself over the greenery like a cheerful lunatic!

13. Join a Sri Lankan cooking class

A cooking class is a lovely way to slow things down and do something a bit more hands-on. 

If you enjoy food-led travel, this is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Ella, especially after a couple of active days. 

I have a soft spot for these kinds of experiences anyway because I did a cooking class in Kerala more than a decade ago, and it ended up being one of the best travel activities I’ve ever done. 

Ever since, I’ve loved finding local classes when I travel. They are such a nice way to connect with a place beyond just seeing it.

14. Spend an afternoon at Ella Ravana Pool Club

Not every day in Ella has to involve muddy shoes, train tracks and uphill puffing. 

If you want a slower afternoon, the pool club is a fun change of pace and a good option if you want to balance out the active stuff with a bit of lounging. 

It’s one of the more relaxed answers to what to do in Ella if you’ve already done the big hikes or just need a breather. You’ll find it at 98 Acres Resort & Spa.

A swim, a drink and a few hours doing very little can be strangely restorative after a packed Sri Lanka itinerary.

15. Slow down in Ella town

And to end with, I think one of the nicest things to do in Ella is simply to enjoy the town itself. 

After the hikes and early starts, it’s a good place to slow down with a coffee, linger over dinner, book in for a massage, or just wander the main strip and see where you end up. 

Ella has a backpacker-town energy, but it also feels easy and relaxed, which is probably part of why I loved it so much. 

So while the viewpoints get all the glory, one of the best things to do in Ella is leave a little room to do not very much at all.

Planning Your Trip To Ella

Where to Stay in Ella

Choosing where to stay in Ella can make a bigger difference than you might expect. 

The town itself is small, but accommodation is spread between the busy centre and the surrounding hillsides, and the experience can feel quite different depending on which you choose. 

If you want cafés, restaurants and the train station within easy walking distance, staying near the centre is the most convenient option. 

But if you’re after peace, cooler air and those sweeping valley views Ella is known for, a hillside stay usually feels far more special.

For me, the hillside was the better choice. It felt calmer, more scenic and much more like the Ella I had imagined.

How to Get to Ella

Most people arrive in Ella by train, but the town is well-connected, so getting here is relatively easy. 

The Kandy to Ella train is one of the most scenic journeys in Sri Lanka, winding through tea plantations, little villages and deep green highlands before finally pulling into town. 

It’s by far the most memorable way to arrive.

You can also reach Ella by bus, private driver or transfer, depending on where you’re coming from and how much time you have. From Colombo, buses and private transfers can be quicker or easier depending on connections. 

And if you are coming from the south coast, a private transfer often makes the most sense, especially if you want to stop elsewhere on the way. 

• Kandy → Ella: I took a 2nd-class reserved seat, pre-booked on 12Go. There were a few spare seats in my carriage, but I’d still reserve so you’re not playing musical chairs on a long ride. Unreserved means standing is possible; it exists.

How to Get Around Ella

Ella town itself is small enough to get around on foot, especially if you’re staying near the centre. 

Restaurants, cafés, the train station and a few smaller guesthouses are all within easy walking distance, so for short stays you may not need much transport at all. 

That said, Ella is hillier than it can look on the map, and some of the roads involve more climbing than you might expect.

For anything slightly further out, tuk-tuks are the easiest option. They’re handy for trailheads, waterfalls, accommodation in the hills and day trips where you do not want to rely on public transport. 

I walked quite a lot while I was in Ella, but there were definitely moments, especially with luggage or after a long day, when a tuk-tuk would have been the better idea. 

In other words, Ella is walkable, but not always effortlessly so.

Best Time to Visit Ella

Ella is one of the cooler parts of Sri Lanka thanks to its higher elevation, which makes it a pleasant break from the hotter lowlands. 

In general, the best time to visit is during the drier months from January to April, when skies are clearer, and hiking conditions are usually better. 

That said, the weather in the hills can be a little unpredictable, and even outside the so-called best season, you can still get lucky.

I visited Ella at the start of October and actually had great weather, despite that being considered part of the wetter season – so I wouldn’t rule it out completely if that’s when your trip falls.

The main thing to keep in mind is that rain can make trails muddier, viewpoints cloudier, and railway walks a little less enjoyable.

Quick Safety and Etiquette Tips

Ella is easy to explore independently, but a little common sense goes a long way. If you plan to walk along the railway tracks, stay alert at all times, listen carefully for trains and move well off the line when one approaches. 

On hikes, trails can be slippery after rain, so decent shoes make a big difference, especially on Ella Rock or any lesser-used paths.

If you visit the forest monastery or any religious site, dress modestly and be respectful with photos. 

It’s also worth being mindful around tea estates, private land and lesser-known swimming spots, as not everywhere is clearly signposted for public access. 

In general, starting early, carrying water and not overpacking your day is the best way to enjoy Ella without unnecessary stress.

Ella is popular, and after spending time here, I can see exactly why. 

The big hitters are genuinely worth it, from the train ride in to Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Rock, but what I enjoyed most was that Ella still had space for a little surprise. 

Some of my favourite moments came from going a bit further: continuing on to the forest monastery, ending a long hike at the AMBA natural pools, and walking on to Demodara instead of turning back with everyone else. 

That mix of classic sights and slightly more offbeat experiences is what made Ella feel so special to me. It’s not a hidden gem, and it doesn’t need to be. 

It’s simply one of those places that’s easy to love, especially when you give yourself enough time to explore beyond the obvious.
