Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary: How To Plan The Perfect First Trip

Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary planning is exciting, but it can also pickle your brain a little.ย

One minute you might be looking at misty mountain towns and famous train rides; the next youโ€™re adding surf beaches, safaris, temples, colonial forts and โ€œmaybe just one more stopโ€ to a trip that is, in reality, only five days long.

And thatโ€™s the thing with Sri Lanka, it looks small, but itโ€™s full of wonder: jungles, ocean, old cities, slow trains and those beautiful little moments that stop you in your tracks.

For this guide, Iโ€™ve put together two different ways to plan your first 5 days in Sri Lanka, so that you can really make the most of your time in one of my favourite countries.

Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary: At A Glance

Palm-lined avenue at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kandy, a peaceful stop on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
Felt tiny under these palms.

If you only have 5 days in Sri Lanka, the biggest decision is not what to add, but what to leave out.ย

The island is small, but the travel days can be longer than expected, so Iโ€™d choose one focused route rather than trying to squeeze in every famous stop.

For this Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary, Iโ€™ve included two different options: a classic highlights route for first-timers who want mountains, trains, culture and safari, and a much slower south coast route for budget travellers who want beaches, surf and easier travel days.

The classic route I suggest is:

Colombo โ€“ Kandy โ€“ Ella โ€“ Safari โ€“ Galle Fort โ€“ Colombo

Monks and visitors near a shrine at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Morning temple moments in Kandy.

The best south coast route is:

Colombo โ€“ Hiriketiya โ€“ Weligama โ€“ Galle Fort โ€“ Colombo

Hiriketiya Beach with soft waves, palm trees and golden sand on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
Dickwella Bay Beach was such a beauty!

Which Sri Lanka Itinerary Should You Choose?

  • Best for first-time visitors: Classic Highlights Route
  • Best for budget travellers: South Coast Route
  • Best for beaches and surfing: South Coast Route
  • Best for the famous train journey: Classic Highlights Route
  • Best for less rushing: South Coast Route
  • Best for variety: Classic Highlights Route

My thoughts

Both routes are full of excitement: colour, noise, and spice, but they offer a different experience. It really comes down to your travel style.

Iโ€™d choose the Classic Highlights Route if this is your first and possibly only trip to Sri Lanka; choose the South Coast Route if you want a cheaper, slower and more relaxed 5 days.

Iโ€™ve also got a full collection of Sri Lanka travel guides if youโ€™re planning a longer trip or want to dive deeper into Kandy, Ella, Ahangama, Hiriketiya and Colombo.

For official destination information, you can also check the Sri Lanka Tourism website.

How To Choose The Best 5-Day Sri Lanka Route

Before we get into the day-by-day plans, itโ€™s worth deciding what kind of trip you actually want.ย

Lush green hill country views near Kandy, with palms, forest and distant mountain slopes.
Sri Lankaโ€™s green side.
Galle Fort lighthouse and ramparts overlooking the ocean on a sunny day in Sri Lanka.
Galle Fort looking gorgeous.

With only 5 days in Sri Lanka, there isnโ€™t much room for โ€œletโ€™s just see how it goesโ€ planning โ€“ unless you enjoy spending half your holiday squashed between bags on public transport and wondering where your beach day disappeared to.

The best route for you will depend on your travel style, budget, season and how much moving around youโ€™re happy to do.

Choose The Classic Highlights Route Ifโ€ฆ

Choose the classic route if this is your first trip to Sri Lanka and you want to experience some of the countryโ€™s most famous highlights in a short amount of time.

This route is a much more condensed version of the one I took in Sri Lanka on my first trip.

Breakfast with mountain views in Ella, including fruit, tea and traditional Sri Lankan food.
Breakfast with this view in Ella.
Traveller standing near Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, one of the classic stops on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A proper Ella postcard moment at Nine Arch Bridge.

Itโ€™s best if you want misty mountain views, the famous Kandy to Ella train journey, a quick taste of Ella, a safari experience and an afternoon wandering the historic streets of Galle Fort.

Itโ€™s the more varied itinerary, but itโ€™s also the busier one.ย

Youโ€™ll be moving around a lot, and some days will feel quite full, so Iโ€™d only choose this route if youโ€™re happy with early starts and long travel days.

Choose The South Coast Route Ifโ€ฆ

Choose the south coast route if you want your 5 days in Sri Lanka to feel slower, sunnier and less hectic.

This itinerary is best for beaches, surfing, cafรฉs, coastal towns and shorter travel days.ย

Coffee beside the ocean at an Ahangama beachfront cafรฉ during a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
Coffee tastes better by the sea.
Quiet beach and oceanfront buildings in Ahangama on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
I enjoyed many a slow morning on the south coast.

Iโ€™ve planned this itinerary with a lovely mix of my favourite places, from the curved bay of Hiriketiya to the surfy stretch around Weligama and Ahangama, before finishing with the old-world charm of Galle Fort.

Itโ€™s also the route Iโ€™d recommend if youโ€™re travelling on a tighter budget, as itโ€™s easier to move along the coast by train or bus, and you wonโ€™t be trying to squeeze in too many expensive experiences at once.

Enjoying this blog? All my content is free, but I do spend a lot of time in coffee shops. If youโ€™re finding my content helpful and would like to buy me a coffee, Iโ€™d love that! Thank you ๐Ÿค—

Optional Add-On: Take A Day Trip To Ella From The South Coast

If youโ€™re choosing the south coast itinerary but still have your heart set on the famous train ride, you can book a day tour from the coast that includes a scenic train ride and a few of Ellaโ€™s best-known highlights.

Traveller leaning from the blue train during the scenic Kandy to Ella train journey in Sri Lanka.
The famous train ride did not disappoint.

This is a good compromise if you donโ€™t want to completely change your 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary, but still want a little taste of the famous hill country.ย

Just keep in mind that this is a very full day, so Iโ€™d only do it if youโ€™re happy with an early start and a lot of travel.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: This Ella private day tour gives you the scenic train ride, Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adamโ€™s Peak without needing to stay overnight.

My Honest Recommendation

If this is your first and possibly only trip to Sri Lanka, Iโ€™d choose the Classic Highlights Route as it gives you a little taste of everything.

But if youโ€™re tired, on a stricter budget, visiting mainly for beaches or just donโ€™t fancy racing across the island in five days, the South Coast Route makes much more sense.ย

Itโ€™s easier, more relaxed and still gives you a gorgeous introduction to Sri Lanka.

Option 1: Classic Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary

This classic Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary is best if you want culture, mountains, the famous train journey, wildlife and Galle Fort.ย

Itโ€™s the busier of the two routes, but itโ€™s also the one Iโ€™d choose if this is your first trip to Sri Lanka and you want to experience some of the islandโ€™s most iconic places.

Just keep in mind that this isnโ€™t a slow itinerary.ย

Nine Arch Bridge in Ella surrounded by jungle and tea country in Sri Lankaโ€™s hill country.
One of Ellaโ€™s prettiest views.
Temple of the Tooth building in Kandy with palm trees and Buddhist flags outside.
Kandy had such calm corners.

Youโ€™ll need to be comfortable with early starts, train journeys and a few long travel days.ย

But if youโ€™re short on time and want a proper Sri Lanka highlights route, this is a brilliant way to do it.

Day 1: Arrive In Colombo And Travel To Kandy

After landing at Colombo Airport, Iโ€™d skip spending too much time in Colombo and travel straight to Kandy.ย

You can get there by train, bus, minibus, or private transfer, depending on your arrival time and budget, but I took the train and recommend it.ย

Iโ€™ve written a full guide on how to get from Colombo to Kandy if you want to compare the different transport options.

Colourful local bus and tuk-tuks on a busy Sri Lankan street.
Public transport, Sri Lanka style.
Railway workers beside the blue train on the scenic Kandy to Ella route in Sri Lanka.
A little behind-the-scenes train moment.

Kandy makes a lovely first stop because it eases you into Sri Lanka without throwing you straight into full travel chaos.ย

Spend the evening slowly wandering around Kandy Lake, grabbing a simple local dinner and settling into your guesthouse.

If you arrive early enough, you could also visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening, but I wouldnโ€™t overpack this first day.ย

Between airport admin, cash, SIM cards and the journey inland, youโ€™ll probably be ready for food, a shower and bed.

Day 2: Explore Kandy Or Take A Sigiriya Day Trip

For your first full day, you have two options.ย

Option 1: The easiest and most budget-friendly option is to stay in Kandy and explore the city properly.ย

Small island in Kandy Lake with old pavilion
Small island in Kandy Lake.
Tall palm avenue in Kandyโ€™s Royal Botanic Gardens, a lovely stop for a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
These palms were unreal.

I recommend attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth, a walk around Kandy Lake, the Royal Botanic Gardens or take a tuk-tuk up to Ambuluwawa Tower for those dramatic hilltop views.

My 2 days in Kandy itinerary goes into more detail if you decide to slow this part of the route down.

Option 2: The more ambitious option is to take a day trip to Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Dambulla.ย

Sigiriya Lion Rock rising above green gardens and forest in Sri Lanka.
A very famous big rock.
Buddha statues and painted cave ceiling inside Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka.
Dambulla is seriously impressive.

This gives you a taste of Sri Lankaโ€™s Cultural Triangle, but it does make for a long day and will usually be easier with a driver or organised tour, so youโ€™ll need to budget accordingly.

Personally, if youโ€™re travelling on a tight budget, Iโ€™d keep this day focused on Kandy. But if Sigiriya is high on your Sri Lanka wish list, this is where Iโ€™d squeeze it in.

For more ideas, Iโ€™ve also shared my favourite things to do in Kandy.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: Hit Kandyโ€™s core, and visit Kandy old town, the Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens and all the famous viewpoints, plusย Kandy Lake on this popular day trip!

Day 3: Take The Famous Kandy To Ella Train

Day three is all about the famous Kandy to Ella train journey. This is one of Sri Lankaโ€™s most iconic travel experiences.

The train curls through the hill country, passing tea plantations, forested slopes, tiny stations and valleys so green they almost look unreal.

Blue train crossing Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, a famous highlight on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
The scenery on this train ride is just wow.
Man holding a baby at the window of a blue Sri Lankan train during a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A sweet Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary moment.

Try to book reserved seats in advance if you can, especially during busy months. If not, you can still travel in third class (tickets are uncapped), but expect it to be more of an adventure.

Once you arrive in Ella, keep the evening easy. Check into your accommodation, wander into town for dinner and enjoy the cooler mountain air before exploring properly the next day.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: If you want to secure your seat in advance, these Kandy to Ella train tickets take the stress out of booking one of Sri Lankaโ€™s most popular rail journeys.

Day 4: Explore Ella

Since Iโ€™ve only allowed for one full day in Ella, Iโ€™d choose two or three highlights rather than trying to do everything.ย

My guide to the best things to do in Ella will help if you want to compare the main sights before choosing.

Some of the highlights are:

  • Little Adamโ€™s Peak: itโ€™s the easiest short hike
  • Nine Arch Bridge: a classic photo stop
  • Ravana Falls: itโ€™s a simple add-on if you want a waterfall without a huge trek.
Natural bathing pool surrounded by forest near Ella in Sri Lankaโ€™s hill country.
My kind of hidden swim spot.
Traveller standing at Ella Rock viewpoint with sweeping mountain views in Sri Lanka.
Ella views worth the climb.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: Want an easier way to visit without figuring out the route yourself? This Ella highlights tour includes the Nine Arch Bridge as part of a wider sightseeing day around Ella.

If youโ€™re a keen hiker, you could swap Little Adamโ€™s Peak for the Ella Rock hike, but this takes longer and will make the day feel much fuller.

Ella is beautiful, but itโ€™s also one of those places where itโ€™s very easy to over-plan and end up rushing between viewpoints.

Pro tip: For a short 5-day itinerary, Iโ€™d keep this day simple: one walk, one famous viewpoint, one slow meal and maybe a cup of tea somewhere with a view.

Got longer? My 2 days in Ella itinerary gives you a much better-paced version of this stop.

Day 5: Safari, Galle Fort And Return Towards Colombo

Your final day is a big one, so youโ€™ll need to plan it carefully.ย

One of the smartest ways to include a safari in a short Sri Lanka itinerary is to book an early morning Ella to Udawalawe safari transfer towards the south coast.ย

This is what I did, and I think it was one of the best decisions I made in Sri Lanka.

Wetland pool with white birds during a Sri Lanka safari stop on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A peaceful little safari scene.
Elephant walking through dry bushland during an Udawalawe safari in Sri Lanka.
My favourite safari moment.

Udawalawe is a good option if you want to see elephants and prefer a quieter safari experience, while Yala is more famous and better known for leopard sightings, although it can be busier and is further away.

You can find official park and permit information through Sri Lankaโ€™s Department of Wildlife Conservation.

After the safari, continue towards Galle Fort for your final stop.ย

Spend the afternoon wandering the old colonial streets of UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, walking the ramparts, visiting the lighthouse and dipping in and out of cafรฉs, galleries and little shops.

White Galle Fort lighthouse with palm trees and blue sky on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
Galle Lighthouse looking bright and beautiful.
Quiet colonial street in Galle Fort with Buddhist flags, old buildings and parked scooters.
Wandering Galleโ€™s old streets.

From Galle, you can either stay overnight if your flight is the next day, or continue back towards Colombo if your timing allows.ย

If youโ€™re not doing the safari transfer and want to travel directly from Ella to the coast, my Ella to Ahangama transport guide breaks down the easiest options.

Option 2: South Coast Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary

This south coast Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary is best if you want beaches, surf towns, cafรฉs, coastal train rides and a slower pace.ย

Itโ€™s still a full route, but itโ€™s much easier than trying to squeeze Kandy, Ella, safari and the coast into one short trip.

Dickwella Bay Beach with a leaning palm tree, turquoise water and soft waves in Sri Lanka.
Dickwella Bay Beach was such a gem.
Quiet sandy cove backed by jungle and palm trees on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
Found a quieter corner at Hiriketiya.

Iโ€™d choose this itinerary if youโ€™re travelling on a budget, visiting during the south coast season, or just want your first trip to Sri Lanka to feel more relaxed.ย

Youโ€™ll miss the hill country, but youโ€™ll get warm beaches, easy coastal towns, great food and a lovely final day in Galle Fort.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: If you want dreamy south coast photos, this cinematic Sri Lanka photoshoot comes with beautiful travel memories from one of the islandโ€™s most photogenic coastal spots.

Day 1: Arrive In Colombo And Travel To Hiriketiya

After landing in Colombo, travel south towards Hiriketiya. Iโ€™ve written a full guide to Hiriketiya Beach Sri Lanka if you want more detail on where to stay, surf and eat around the bay.ย

This is a long first travel day, so Iโ€™d keep the rest of your plans very simple once you arrive.

Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe-shaped bay with a laid-back surf scene, jungle-covered edges and a compact little beach area where everything feels close together.ย

Hiriketiya Bay with calm turquoise water, palm trees and swimmers during a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
This bay is so easy to love.
Beach cafรฉ table under the trees overlooking Hiriketiya Bay in Sri Lanka.
Lunch with a beach view.

I thought it was beautiful, but itโ€™s popular, so I wouldnโ€™t call it undiscovered; however, it still has that soft, boho beach charm that makes it a lovely first stop on the south coast.

Spend your first evening settling in, walking down to the bay and finding somewhere easy for dinner.ย

Day 2: Hiriketiya, Blue Beach Island And Dickwella Bay

Use your first full day for a relaxed beach-hopping day around Hiriketiya and Dickwella. Start with a swim or surf at Hiriketiya Beach, then head towards Blue Beach Island and Dickwella Bay Beach.

Hiriketiya is a brilliant place for beginner surfers, but itโ€™s also lovely if you just want to sit on the sand and watch the day unfold.

Traveller sitting on the sand at Hiriketiya Beach with beach bags and surfboards nearby.
Beach day happiness.
Grilled fish lunch by the sea at Dickwella Bay Beach in Sri Lanka.
Still dreaming about this lunch.

There are cafรฉs and beach restaurants around the bay, so itโ€™s an easy place to spend a slow morning.

In the afternoon, visit Dickwella Bay Beach for a quieter stretch of sand.ย

It feels much less developed than Hiriketiya, with a calmer, more local feel and trees still tumbling towards the water โ€“ it was one of my favourite finds in Sri Lanka.

Day 3: Travel To Weligama And Visit Mirissa

On day three, continue along the coast to Weligama.ย

This is one of the best budget bases on the south coast, especially if you want to surf, use public transport and stay somewhere with plenty of affordable guesthouses and hostels.

Weligama itself is a practical beach town rather than the prettiest stop on this itinerary, but it works really well as a base.ย

Tall coconut palm against a bright blue sky on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
A very blue Sri Lanka sky.
Fishing boat pulled onto the sand at a quiet beach on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
Slow beach walks are the best in Weligama.

Itโ€™s especially good for beginner surfers, with a long sandy bay and plenty of surf schools.

In the afternoon or evening, head to nearby Mirissa. You can visit Coconut Tree Hill, walk along the beach, find somewhere for dinner or stay for sunset.ย

Mirissa is more polished and holiday-feeling than Weligama, but Weligama usually makes more sense if youโ€™re trying to keep costs down.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: Find surf lessons and surf experiences along Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast, from beginner-friendly sessions to guided surf trips near Ahangama, Weligama and beyond.

Day 4: Ahangama, Kabalana Beach And Koggala Lake

Spend day four exploring the stretch around Ahangama and Kabalana Beach. My guide to the best things to do in Ahangama has more ideas if you want to spend longer in this area.ย

This part of the south coast has become very popular with surfers, digital nomads and cafรฉ lovers, so expect a mix of local life and oceanfront hangouts.

Pandanus leaves framing a rocky beach and waves in Ahangama, Sri Lanka.
Ahangamaโ€™s wilder side.
Wide sandy Kabalana beach with gentle waves and palm trees on the south coast of Sri Lanka.
Kabalana Beach + room to breathe by the ocean.

Kabalana Beach is one of the best places in the area for surf and beach time, while Ahangama itself is great for cafรฉs, sunset drinks and a more social south coast atmosphere.

Iโ€™ve also put together a guide to the best cafรฉs in Ahangama if brunch is high on your south coast priorities.

I didnโ€™t think it was the prettiest town at first glance โ€“ the main road is busy and a little rough around the edges โ€“ but once you reach the beachfront or head into the back roads, it makes more sense.

Devilโ€™s Rock and ocean views near Ahangama, a scenic south coast stop on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary view I loved.
Misty palm-lined coastline near the south coast of Sri Lanka after tropical rain.
Moody coastal magic.

The stilt fishermen here are famous, and if you want to add something different, visit Koggala Lake or a nearby tea estate in the afternoon.ย

If you decide to base yourself here for longer, my 4 days in Ahangama itinerary gives you a slower version of this south coast stop.

๐Ÿ‘‰BOOK: This Koggala Lake boat tour includes a visit to Cinnamon Island, making it an easy way to slow down, get off the beach for a few hours, and see a greener side of Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.

Day 5: Galle Fort And Return To Colombo

For your final day, travel to Galle Fort. This is one of the best places to end a short south coast itinerary because it gives you a completely different feel after several days of beaches and surf towns.

I enjoyed Galle Fort. Itโ€™s all old colonial streets, weathered ramparts, boutique shops, cafรฉs, galleries and sea views.ย

Shaded colonial lane inside Galle Fort with old buildings, trees and warm evening light.
Galle had the prettiest corners.
Fresh juice and iced drink at a courtyard cafรฉ in Galle Fort, Sri Lanka.
A slow Galle cafรฉ stop.

Itโ€™s easy to explore on foot, and you donโ€™t need a strict plan.ย

Just wander between the lighthouse, the fort walls and the pretty side streets, stopping for food, coffee or a little look in the shops whenever something catches your eye.

From Galle, you can either return to Colombo for your final night or continue straight towards the airport if your flight time allows.ย

Coconut stall beside a busy Colombo street with tuk-tuks and motorbikes, a colourful start to a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
Colombo street scenes.
Colourful Hindu temple tower in Colombo covered with detailed statues and an elephant figure.
So much detail in every corner.

๐Ÿ‘‰ BOOK: If you do have one final day in the capital, I really enjoyed this Colombo city tour by tuk-tuk as an easy way to see the highlights without planning every stop myself.

Again, Iโ€™d personally avoid making this day too tight. Galle is the kind of place that deserves a slow wander, not a panicked march with your backpack.

How To Keep This Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary Budget-Friendly

Even though this isnโ€™t a full Sri Lanka budget breakdown, there are a few easy ways to keep your 5-day trip affordable without making it feel too restrictive.

The biggest one is transport. Trains and local buses are by far the cheapest way to get around Sri Lanka, especially along the south coast.ย

They might not always be the quickest or most comfortable option, but they do keep costs low and add a bit of adventure to the journey.

Colourful local bus parked by an old building in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan buses have character.

Accommodation is another place where you can save. Sri Lanka has loads of guesthouses, homestays and hostels, so you donโ€™t need to stay somewhere fancy every night.ย

I chose simple, well-located accommodation and spent money on experiences that really mattered to me.

Mellow Hostel in Ahangama, Sri Lanka
My favourite hostel in Ahangama.
Ella Ceylonka guesthouse, Ella, Sri Lanka
Loved this little guesthouse in Ella.

Food is also easy to keep affordable if you mix local spots with the occasional cafรฉ.ย

Rice and curry, hoppers, roti, kottu and short eats (Sri Lankan bakery snacks) are much cheaper than western brunch spots, especially around the south coast where smoothie bowls and flat whites can quietly mug your wallet.

Plate of Sri Lankan rice and curry with dhal, sambol, roti and vegetables.
Proper Sri Lankan comfort food.

For a short trip, Iโ€™d also pick one bigger paid experience in each location, rather than trying to do everything. That could be a safari, Sigiriya, a surf lesson or a private transfer that saves you time.ย

Pro tip: With only five days in Sri Lanka, the goal isnโ€™t to do the cheapest version of everything โ€“ itโ€™s to spend wisely where it actually improves your trip. Remember, this is still your holiday.

How To Get Around Sri Lanka In 5 Days

Getting around Sri Lanka is part of the adventure, but with only five days, you do need to be a little strategic.ย

The cheapest option isnโ€™t always the best option, especially when a slow journey can eat up half a day.

For budget travellers, trains and local buses are the best way to keep costs down.ย

Trains are especially good for scenic routes, while buses are useful along the south coast where towns are linked by the main road.ย

Traveller smiling inside a Sri Lankan train carriage during a budget trip around the island.
Train day happiness.
Blue and red tuk-tuks parked under a tree in Sri Lanka.
Tuk-tuks everywhere, always.

Tuk-tuks are useful for short journeys but Iโ€™d only use them around towns, between guesthouses and attractions, or when you arrive somewhere with your backpack and immediately decide walking was a terrible idea.ย

I used them often in Kandy, Ella, Ahangama and Colombo, and they were usually the easiest way to cover short distances without much fuss.

On the south coast, scooters can also be a really good option if youโ€™re confident driving.ย

They give you much more freedom to beach-hop between places, although Iโ€™d only recommend hiring one if youโ€™re already comfortable on busy roads.

Busy road in Ahangama with cars, scooters, tuk-tuks and stormy skies on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast.
Ahangamaโ€™s not-so-polished side.
Street near a Sri Lankan train station with tuk-tuks, cars and people waiting by the road.
Kandy street wanderings.

Private transfers are the most expensive option, but they can be worth it on a short Sri Lanka itinerary.ย

If a transfer saves you several hours, avoids multiple changes or helps you connect the highlands with the south coast, I think itโ€™s money well spent.

Pro tip: My honest advice is to use public transport where it makes sense, but donโ€™t be afraid to pay for a smart transfer if it makes the whole route smoother. With a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary, your time is part of the budget too.

Where To Stay On A 5-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

For a short Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary, Iโ€™d choose accommodation based on location rather than luxury.ย

You donโ€™t have loads of time, so staying somewhere central, walkable or close to transport will make your route much easier.

Where To Stay On The Classic Highlights Route

For the classic route, Iโ€™d stay in Kandy, Ella and either Galle or Colombo, depending on your flight time.

  • In Kandy, choose a simple guesthouse or homestay close enough to town that youโ€™re not spending too much on tuk-tuks. Hillside stays can be lovely for the views, but keep in mind that most are further from the centre.
  • In Ella, Iโ€™d stay somewhere close to town or near the train station if youโ€™re short on time. Ella has some beautiful hill-view homestays, but with only one night, convenience matters.
  • Galle is a lovely option if you want to end the trip slowly inside or near the fort.
  • Colombo makes more sense if you have an early flight or want one comfortable night before leaving Sri Lanka. I stayed at Marino Beach before flying out and wrote a full Marino Beach Colombo review if youโ€™re considering a fancier final-night stay.
Rooftop infinity pool at Marino Beach Colombo overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Where I stayed in Colombo, Marino Beach Hotel.

Where To Stay On The South Coast Route

For the south coast route, Iโ€™d base myself in Hiriketiya, either Weligama or Ahangama, and Galle.

  • Hiriketiya is best if you want a compact beach stay where you can walk to the bay, surf, swim and eat without needing much transport.
  • Weligama is the most practical budget base. It has lots of guesthouses, hostels, surf schools and easy transport links to Mirissa, Ahangama and Galle.
  • Ahangama is better if you want stylish cafรฉs, surf beaches, sunset spots and a more social south coast feel.ย
  • Galle is the easiest place to slow down, wander the fort and be well-positioned for the journey back towards Colombo.

Best Time To Follow This Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary

The best time to follow this Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary depends on which route you choose.ย

Sri Lanka has different weather patterns across the island, so itโ€™s worth checking the official Sri Lanka rainfall seasons before you lock in your plans.

Sunset over the ocean on Sri Lankaโ€™s south coast during a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary sunset.

For the Classic Highlights Route, which includes Kandy, Ella, safari country and Galle, you can travel for much of the year, but be prepared for the hill country to feel cooler and wetter than the coast.ย

Ella especially can be misty, rainy and beautifully moody, so pack a light rain jacket and donโ€™t expect every mountain view to behave on command.

For the South Coast Route, the best time is generally during the south coast dry season, when the sea is usually better for beach days and surfing.

Misty green hill country views with forested slopes and houses in Sri Lanka.
Moody mountain views in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

As a general rule, January to April is a lovely time for Sri Lankaโ€™s Hill Country, while the south coast is usually at its best from December to April.

I visited Sri Lanka in October, which is a bit of a shoulder-season gamble. On paper, it can be rainy and unsettled, but I was actually really lucky with the weather.ย

That said, October and November can still be mixed, so Iโ€™d keep your plans flexible and avoid booking every tiny detail too tightly.

What Iโ€™d Do With Only 5 Days In Sri Lanka

If I only had 5 days in Sri Lanka, the biggest thing Iโ€™d do is choose one clear focus from the beginning.ย

Itโ€™s so easy to look at the map and think you can squeeze in Kandy, Ella, Sigiriya, a safari, Galle, Mirissa and half the south coast, but itโ€™s not the reality.

For a first trip, Iโ€™d either commit to the classic highlights route and accept that it will be busy, or choose the south coast route and enjoy a slower, beachier version of Sri Lanka.ย

Trying to do both properly in five days is impossible.

Temple bell tower and palm trees at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, a classic stop on a Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary.
A peaceful Kandy stop.

Iโ€™m also more willing to pay for smarter transfers if it saves a lot of time. I love a cheap train or local bus, but on a short itinerary, spending a little extra once will make the whole route feel smoother.

Most importantly, Iโ€™d leave a little breathing room.ย

Sri Lanka is full of those small moments that donโ€™t fit neatly into an itinerary: a slow breakfast, a chat with a guesthouse owner, a beach you planned to visit for one hour and accidentally stay at all afternoon (Dickwella Bay Beach for me).ย

Those are often the bits you remember most, so remember to be flexible and youโ€™ll have the best trip to Sri Lanka.

Final Thoughts: Is 5 Days In Sri Lanka Enough?

Yes, 5 days in Sri Lanka is enough for a brilliant first taste of the country, but only if you donโ€™t try to do everything.

If you want the classic Sri Lanka moments, choose the route with Kandy, Ella, safari and Galle Fort. It will be busier, but youโ€™ll get mountains, trains, wildlife and history all woven into one short trip.

If you want something slower, cheaper and easier to manage, choose the south coast route.ย

Youโ€™ll miss the hill country, unless you add a one-day Ella tour, but youโ€™ll have beaches, surf towns, cafรฉs, coastal trains and Galle Fort without quite so much rushing around.

Either way, the best Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary is the one that gives you enough time to actually enjoy where you are.ย

Sri Lanka is colourful, chaotic, beautiful and full of little surprises, and even a short trip will leave you wanting to return.

FAQs About This Sri Lanka 5 Days Itinerary

What is the best Sri Lanka 5 days itinerary for first-timers?

For first-timers who want the classic Sri Lanka experience, Iโ€™d choose the route with Kandy, Ella, a safari and Galle Fort. Itโ€™s busier, but it gives you a good mix of mountains, trains, culture, wildlife and history.

Is the south coast route better for budget travellers?

In many ways, yes. The south coast route is more compact, easier to travel by bus or train, and gives you more flexibility with affordable guesthouses, hostels and local food. It also involves fewer long cross-country travel days.

Can I visit Ella and the beach in 5 days?

Yes, but it will feel rushed. If you really want to include Ella and the beach, Iโ€™d follow the classic highlights route and finish around Galle or the south coast. If you want a slower trip, choose either the highlands or the coast as your main focus.

Should I visit Sigiriya on a 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary?

You can visit Sigiriya on a 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary, but it will make the trip busier. Iโ€™d only add it as a day trip from Kandy if itโ€™s high on your wish list and youโ€™re happy with a long travel day.

Do I need to book the Kandy to Ella train in advance?

If you want a reserved seat, yes, Iโ€™d book the Kandy to Ella train in advance where possible. Itโ€™s one of Sri Lankaโ€™s most popular train journeys, especially with first-time visitors, so seats can sell out during busy periods.
