If you’re planning a trip to the ancient city, you’re going to need to know where to stay! With so many unique attractions to explore, choosing the best area to stay in Ayutthaya is key.
We visited the city during a 6-week trip to Thailand, and although we hadn’t originally planned to visit, it turned out to be a great addition and a fascinating trip. We visited many of Ayutthaya’s historical temples in order to get a better understanding of the city’s rich history, and we really think it’s worth a few days to explore.
The best area of Ayutthaya may depend on your preferences, but the centre of the island is always a great starting point for any traveller.

Best Area To Stay In Ayutthaya: The Breakdown
If you’re not familiar with Ayutthaya, you’ll want to know that the city is broken up into districts. The main area where most of the temples are found is known as the Ayutthaya Historical Park – it’s a UNESCO site.
Ultimately, you’ll want to stay in the area surrounding the Historical park. The centre of Ayutthaya City is on a small circular island wrapped by the Chao Praya River and then, to the east, the Pasak River.
Within the island, there are two notable areas to stay in Ayutthaya. The first is centred on the island to the east and is a more built-up zone, while the second is south. Although still on the island, the area south of the Historical Park is less busy, and you’ll find most of the accommodation along Uthong Road overlooking the river.
⭐ Pro tip >> Uthong Road is a circular ring road going around the island.
Next, you might decide to stay west of the Chao Praya River. I’ve actually included hotels from the south and west in the section below, as there aren’t too many options. That said, it’s certainly a great area to stay close to one of the most revered temples, Wat Chaiwatthanaram.
After that, the other areas are outside the island. You can choose to stay east of the Pasak River, which is slightly more rural; however, one of the main temples, Wat Maheyong, is located there. You will also find the popular Ayutthaya Floating Market there.
For a more rural experience, you can immerse yourself in the lush riverside villages of north Ayutthaya. Although further away from the centre, this area is a beautiful spot to unwind and take in the natural scenery!

Stay Central On Ayutthaya Island: East Of The Historical Park
Ayutthaya island has plenty of accommodation options for travellers of all budgets. This area is close to many of the city’s top attractions, including Wat Phra Mahathat, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, and Wat Phra Si Sanphe – so it’s easy to get around while staying there.
This is the area I stayed in when we visited Ayutthaya, and I think it’s a good area to stay in if you’re on a quick visit.
Since it’s so central, you’ll be able to walk to many of the main attractions, restaurants and the famous Ayutthaya Night Market.
⭐ Pro tip >> The only downside is that it does get busy, and nighttime can be noisy in some areas. For us, this was fine as we were out most evenings. That said, it’s the best area to stay in Ayutthaya, and the restaurants and bars seemed to close around midnight, and then it was quiet.

Best Hostels
11:11 Hostel: Dorms
This hostel is the perfect budget spot to stay in Ayutthaya. It sounds like the staff is friendly, helpful, and always available to answer any questions. The hostel is tidy and clean, and the breakfast is delicious with fresh homemade bakery items.
11:11 Hostel’s location is also great, with lovely views of the river and close to food and amenities. The only downside seems to be that it can be quiet and not very lively, but overall it’s a great place to stay.
One guest did note the mattresses were too firm, and the breakfast could have had more variety. However, these minor issues do not take away from the overall positive experience.

Zleepinezz Hostel: Double Beds
This is where Jack and I stayed and we just loved it! Our thoughts aside, I’ve also read some great reviews about Zleepinezz Hostel so it seems like it wasn’t only us that had a great experience!
The location is perfect, just in front of two temples, and the staff is beyond nice, providing many tips and options for exploring Ayutthaya. The breakfast is very good and very tasty, and there are many options to choose from.Tea/coffee is available all day long.
The rooms are good, clean, and comfortable, and bike rental is available for just 50 THB per day. The only downside was the noise from the street at night, which could be heard until midnight.

Best Hotels
Phuttal Residence: Double Beds
Note: This one is on the island, NORTH of the Historical Park.
Looking for the perfect place to stay in Ayutthaya? Look no further than Phuttal Residence, a charming and beautifully decorated guesthouse, located near the river in a tranquil garden setting.
Guests raved about the friendly staff, exceptional service, and delicious breakfasts served in the garden. While some mentioned that the location was a bit far from markets and restaurants, others enjoyed the peacefulness of being away from the city centre.
There were a few minor dislikes, such as a weak shower and a slightly uncomfortable mattress, but overall the reviews were overwhelmingly positive.
If you’re planning a trip to Ayutthaya and want to stay in a cosy, welcoming guesthouse with great service and a beautiful location, this is definitely the place to stay!

Siri Guesthouse: Double Beds
Based on the reviews, it seems like this homestay is a great option for your stay in Ayutthaya if you’re looking for an affordable double room.
The rooms are said to be comfortable and exceed expectations, and the staff are incredibly helpful, providing guests with tips on what to see and offering affordable bike rentals.
Siri Guesthouse’s location is also excellent, with many historic sites and the night market within walking distance. While some guests found the gate being locked after 11 pm to be a safety concern, others appreciated the added security.
Overall, guests agree that this is a cosy and welcoming homestay that offers great value for money.

Room Story Hostel: Double Beds
Another option is Room Story Hostel which offers budget-friendly double rooms. It sounds like this hostel has incredibly friendly and helpful staff who go above and beyond to make sure guests have a great stay.
The spacious and comfortable rooms have a cosy Japanese style with thoughtful details. Guests appreciate the tips and recommendations provided by the hosts, and the convenient location near attractions.
However, some guests noted that the bathroom was on a different floor than their room, and there were some issues with noise from neighbouring bars…

Ban Boonchu: Double Beds
Ban Boonchu looks like a nice mid-range hotel for the everyday traveller! The guests had a perfect stay at this lovely and centrally located guesthouse in Ayutthaya.
The host went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The room was clean and cosy, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
Although the shower was a bit small, there was nothing else to dislike about the property. The only other minor issue was the limited options for vegetarians in the town.

Luxury Hotel
📍One Dhatu Ayutthaya: Junior Suite
There are not many reviews for this hotel which make me believe it’s relatively new. From those that it does have, it’s glowing! This place is in a fantastic location, and the staff are exceptional!
The host is said to be so lovely and accommodating. The rooms come with a spacious fridge, and the Wi-Fi is said to be excellent.
The only minor issue is that access upstairs can be a little tricky. Overall, somewhere checking out for a luxurious stay.

Stay Central On Ayutthaya Island: South Of The Historical Park
A central island stay south of the Historical Park, I would say, is the second best area to stay in Ayutthaya. It’s a bit fancier than the area above, and you’ll find a handful of accommodation options ranging from higher-end guesthouses to luxury hotels.
Staying south on the island means you will still be close to all major attractions but directly away from the city centre. This makes it a great spot if you want to be closer to the city’s historical sites but in a more peaceful area.
⭐ Pro tip >> there are plenty of riverside restaurants and cafes there, too, so it’s easy to find authentic local cuisine during your stay with river or park views.

Baan Pomphet: Deluxe Double Beds
The guests agree that Baan Pomphet is a beautiful and stylish hotel, with spacious and well-organised rooms, comfortable beds, and friendly and attentive staff.
The location on the old island makes it easy to cycle to the historical park, and the breakfast is great with a fantastic view of the river.
The hotel has a modern boutique feel while incorporating ancient techniques and architecture. The small swimming pool is gorgeous and the service is incredible.
The only issues mentioned were the presence of mosquitoes at dusk and the loud AC, so really not that many issues at all!
✅ This accommodation books up fast and usually has limited availability. Make sure you make a booking at Baan Pomphet.
Baan Keang Chon Ayutthaya: Double Beds
The guests were very impressed with the hosts who they described as the nicest and most helpful people they have met during their travels. The hotel is located in a fantastic spot on the river with beautiful views and is close to many high-quality food and drink places.
The rooms at Baan Keang Chon Ayutthaya are clean, and comfortable, and had stunning views of the sunrise and sunset. The location is also convenient for sightseeing and the hosts were always willing to provide useful information.
The only downsides mentioned were the location of the coffee supplies in the lounge downstairs and the separate single blankets on the queen bed.

Athithara Homestay: Executive Double Beds
Based on the review, Athithara Homestay sounds like this hotel has a lot of great amenities and is in a wonderful location right on the river.
Guests appreciated the private parking, breakfast, and nearby attractions like temples and restaurants. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the teak building was beautiful. The gardens were pretty and the rooms were spacious.
The only downside mentioned was the weak wifi connection, but overall guests found it to be good value, quiet, and charming. Some guests even recommended it to their families and plan to return for a longer stay. So, they must have enjoyed it!

Sala Ayutthaya: Double Beds
Sala Ayutthaya is a very popular hotel although it’s not without its issues. However, most of the guests enjoyed their stay at this hotel, especially the clean rooms and spacious river view rooms with a fantastic view of the ancient temple.
They praised the hotel’s location, which is great for visiting the historical temples in Ayutthaya, and the friendly staff.
However, they had some negative experiences with the hotel’s food and privacy. Some have said the rooftop bar was often crowded with visitors, and the hotel restaurant by the river was frequented by tour groups, which interfered with guests’ enjoyment. So just something to keep in mind if you’re visiting during peak season.

Outside Ayutthaya Island: East Of Pasak River
If you’re looking for a bit more tranquillity than the hustle and bustle of the centre, east of the Pasak River is a great place to stay! The gem there is Wat Maheyong, but the area includes several other historical landmarks, temples and ruins.

Baan Are Gong Riverside Homestay: Single Beds
It sounds like the guests enjoyed their stay here praising its convenient location near the train station, bike rental, and ferry service. They found the owner and staff to be friendly and welcoming too.
Baan Are Gong Riverside Homestay has a charming and cosy atmosphere with a seating area overlooking the river view. The giant bed was also a highlight for them! However, some guests experienced noise issues from the corridor and room above and found the breakfast options limited.
Note, there is no fridge or kettle in the room, the staff might let you use the fridge. Overall, the guests enjoyed their stay and felt at home.

Baan Canalee: 1 Bed House
Baan Canalee is a basic but beautiful and comfortable guesthouse with friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are very clean and well set up with big rooms and excellent mattresses.
The host is very attentive and booked trips and taxis. The location is great for breakfast, and there are lots of lovely plants and other touches. The guesthouse is very clean and the staff are friendly.
It’s a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride to the ancient city, and there’s a great tom-yam restaurant just across the street. One thing which might be a concern is some guests found the bed to be very low, so not good if you struggle to get in and out of low beds.

Baan Thai House: 1 Bed Villa
Based on the reviews, it sounds like Baan Thai House is a beautiful and well-established resort with comfortable and spotless villas and rooms. The staff and owners are super helpful, friendly, and easy to communicate with.
Baan Thai House has a beautiful swimming pool, lovely gardens, and shaded seating areas. The location is peaceful, with a short 5-minute walk to the railway station.
Guests recommend trying out the massages, and the breakfast service was excellent. However, lunch is simple family cooking, and the toilet facilities are basic but clean and functional.
The only downside is that the location is a bit far from the city centre, even when cycling, but it’s easy to ask for a short taxi ride or tuk-tuk to get to the historic city.

Banmai87 Guest House: Double Beds
Baan Baimai Boutique Room is a charming and peaceful retreat tucked away on the river estuary in Ayutthaya. Guests loved the spacious balcony overlooking the river and the kind hospitality of the family who run the property.
The hosts went above and beyond to help guests with transportation and tours, even giving them a lift when taxis weren’t available.
Banmai87 Guest House‘s location is just outside the island and close to the train station, making it easy to explore the area. Guests also enjoyed the delicious breakfast with plenty of coffee options.
The only negatives were that the location was a bit hard to find for taxis, but the hosts were very helpful, and the bathrooms could be bigger.

Outside Ayutthaya Island: West/South Of Chao Praya River
If you want to stay near the rivers and immerse yourself in some stunning natural surroundings, heading south of the island or west of the Chao Praya River is a great choice. Stay here, and you can enjoy views of lush greenery while sipping an iced coffee on your porch!
⭐ Pro tip >> In this spot, although there are not many options, you’ll find little guesthouses made out of bamboo with stunning gardens that offer an ideal respite from the hustle and bustle of the capital city.
Best Homestays
Ayothaya Riverside House: Double Beds
It sounds like the guests really enjoyed their stay at this charming traditional guesthouse. The owner and staff were very welcoming and helpful, and the terrace and location by the river were beautiful.
Ayothaya Riverside House was very clean and had good vibes. However, some guests mentioned the noise from passing boats and thin walls which made it difficult to have privacy or sleep. Mosquitoes were also a bit of an issue. Nonetheless, earplugs were suggested as a solution to the noise issue and take mozzie spray!
One guest said an employee even gave a great Thai massage, which is something you shouldn’t miss. Overall, this is a great option if you want to stay in a rural area on a shoestring budget.

Falik Farm Stay: Double Beds
Guests are saying the family who owns this property is incredibly kind and accommodating, going above and beyond for their guests. Falik Farm Stay is a hidden gem with breathtaking views and a peaceful rural setting, just a short drive away from the main attractions.
The breakfast is delicious and the rooms are clean with great amenities. While the location may not be ideal for those seeking a busy stay, it’s perfect for those looking for a quiet and relaxing escape.
However, some guests found the rooms to be small and the beds too hard. The building is also not well insulated, making the rooms quite hot. Additionally, guests should be aware that alcohol cannot be consumed on the property due to religious customs.

It seems like The Ayutthaya Retreat is a beautiful and peaceful hotel with helpful staff, offering a unique and authentic Thai experience for travellers interested in exploring old Ayutthaya.
The rooms and facilities are traditional and well-maintained, with plenty of sitting areas, a spa, and a dining area on a boat by the hotel. The food is delicious, offering home-cooked Thai and Italian dishes.
However, some guests have pointed out that the swimming pool is in need of renovation and the hot water pressure is low, with no warm water for the tub. Additionally, the internet connection through one of the multiple wifi networks was down during their visit.
Overall, the guests agree that it’s a charming and romantic place to stay with a traditional Thai atmosphere.

The villagers in this area are incredibly friendly, and it’s a great way to experience what Thai rural life is like outside of the city. Plus, there’s some beautiful scenery to take in – and plenty of places to explore!

Plus Hostel Ayutthaya provides a welcoming and family-like atmosphere, with a lovely garden for relaxation. The bathrooms are clean and spacious, and guests are treated to delicious included breakfast and dinner.
The location is convenient and bikes are available for rent. The hosts are wonderful and very helpful, assisting with transportation and other needs. The dorms are comfortable and there’s a great common area for socializing.
One downside is that some guests may find the mattresses to be hard. However, overall it’s a fantastic place to stay with no major complaints and great for a budget traveller.

The Warehouse – Ayutthaya: Double Beds
It sounds like The Warehouse – Ayutthaya is a great place to stay with its self-check-in system and modern design. The helpful staff and tasteful rooms make it a perfect place to relax.
That said, some guests did not appreciate the bathroom being located outside the room and the shower and toilet not being en-suite.
There were also a few minor issues such as a poorly draining toilet and a small air conditioning unit in one room. One guest mentioned that the mattress was a bit hard but still thought the price was great.
Ultimately, guests agree that this is a nice place to stay with well-designed rooms.

Based on the reviews, it sounds like the staff at this accommodation are extremely friendly and helpful, providing guests with bikes for exploring the nearby attractions and resolving any issues promptly.

This hotel is a dream and more than special, with a warm welcome from the owner and staff who couldn’t do enough to make the stay comfortable and memorable for their guests.
The breakfast is perfect, and the beautiful garden and riverside location are highlights. The only downside is that it’s not located near the city centre, around a 10-15 minute drive away.
However, guests agree that it’s a peaceful, comfortable, and romantic place to stay in Ayutthaya, and they would definitely go back!

How Many Days In Ayutthaya?
Ultimately, it depends on your travel style. If you’re backpacking through Thailand you’ll want to pencil in a quick 2-day visit to Ayutthaya. However, if you’re visiting the country on a holiday you could spend a few more days in the ancient city.
The surrounding countryside and scenic riverside views make it the perfect location to unwind and relax. That said, it’s usually not thought of as a place to visit for longer than a few days but if you have the time, spend more in Ayutthaya’s countryside!

Jack and I found ourselves in Phuket for nearly 3 weeks due to an unexpected Covid diagnosis; however, we had ample opportunity to explore the city far away from tourist spots like Patong. We were pleasantly surprised at how historical and vibrant Phuket Town ended up being.
Koh Mook Island
Koh Mook is an untouched paradise in southern Thailand, located in the district of Trang. It’s only accessible by boat and offers a relaxed, low-key atmosphere as there are no cats and tourism is still new. In addition to local culture, Koh Mook features friendly people and a main street that has a small handful of shops and restaurants.
The island is an ideal setting for tranquillity and serenity with its picturesque nature scenes at the shoreline – it’s the perfect place to get away from it all and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!
Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi, a city in Thailand with a dark past, is home to the story of the Death Railway and Hell Fire Pass. This city has lots of museums, monuments and memorials to honour those who died during this terrible time.
Despite the sadness that permeates Kanchanaburi, it’s only an hour away from two beautiful national parks: Yai Sok and Erawan National Parks. Erawan National Park is particularly noteworthy for its gorgeous multi-tiered waterfalls!
Kanchanaburi was one of Jack’s favourite places in Thailand; so much tragic yet beautiful history makes it a must-visit destination for anyone visiting the country.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is a world-renowned digital nomad hub, popular amongst nomads and remote workers. This large, eclectic city boasts cool hippie vibes that make it enjoyable. It’s close to other mellow towns like Pai, you should check out route 1095 Chiang Mai to Pai by motorbike!
Moreover, if you’d like the opportunity to see elephants in Thailand, then Chiang Mai is definitely the place for you! Plus, this beautiful setting also has lots of intricate temples, colourful traditional markets and delectable food stalls to feast your eyes – and belly – on!

Khao Sok National Park
Located in Southern Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is an amazing destination for adventure seekers. From mesmerising landscapes to exciting activities like river rafting, exploring caves and going on rainforest hikes, this national park is something out of a fairytale!
Not to mention that you can also stay on the famous floating bungalows on the lake where you can relax and take in the breathtaking scenery. When visiting Khao Sok National Park, be sure to also explore its rich history and buy some handmade jewellery crafted by local artisans.
Is Ayutthaya, Thailand Safe For Tourists?
Ayutthaya is mostly considered a safe tourist destination that offers travellers a safe and enjoyable experience. You can visit safely with the knowledge that the local authorities take security seriously and therefore crime rates are low.
That being said, it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings and take necessary precautions. It’s advised to avoid political protests or demonstrations, keep an eye on your belongings when in crowded areas, and use caution when using public transport.
