16 Best Hotels In Phuket Old Town: From My Personal Research

Are you looking for the best hotels in Phuket Old Town? You’ll be so happy you’ve landed here if you are!

If you’ve got a trip to Thailand on your mind, now’s the time to start planning and booking accommodation. One of the places I enjoyed the most in Phuket was the old town, and I think it’s one of the best areas to stay in Phuket.

The city is a mixture of cultural attractions, including Sino-Portuguese architecture. The markets, museums and shops make it a wonderful gem, but it often gets missed for the island’s beachside resorts. However, staying in the old town is a superb choice, especially if you’re searching for somewhere more affordable.

In this post, I’ve picked out the best accommodation in Phuket’s old town.

Best Locations To Stay In Thailand

Thailand is a large country where I spent five weeks backpacking around, exploring ancient sites, trekking through national parks and visiting animal sanctuaries. Although I enjoyed my time in Phuket town, Thailand is a fantastic country to visit and there are many other places to enjoy.

Ayutthaya: The ancient capital of the Siam Kingdom, Ayutthaya ruled for over 400 years before it was ransacked by the Burmese army. Many of the city’s central temples and palaces were destroyed and burnt but what remains today is a rich archaeological site which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fantastic place to visit.

Chiang Mai: A favourite of many backpackers, Chiang Mai is a large mountain city in the north of Thailand. I loved its upbeat vibe and boho-casual culture full of ex-pats, nomads and locals. It’s a place full of street markets and narrow winding roads bursting with cafes and massage parlours.

Khao Sok National Park: Khao Sok National Park is one of the best places to stay on Thailand’s famous floating bungalows and is an experience everyone should have. You’ll be able to swim in the lake, explore the caves and hike around the forest while learning about the history of the area from a local guide.

โ€‹โ€‹Kanchanaburi: Another historical city to visit in Thailand, Kanchanaburi harbours a dark secret and is somewhere to head if you’re interested in the Japanese occupation of Thailand during WW2. Specifically the Death Railway and Hellfire Pass! Not only is the city rich in museums and monuments, but it’s also very close to the Erawan National Park, which just happens to have one of the best waterfalls in Thailand.

Koh Mook: My favourite island in Thailand! Koh Mook is a tiny island in the Trang district in southern Thailand and is the perfect tropical destination for those of you looking to escape crowds and chill out on a beach with no distractions.

Why Is It Worth Staying In Phuket Town?

Phuket Town is definitely worth visiting in as it gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the region’s culture and history. The town is rich in history, and its unique Sino-Portuguese architecture, museums, and temples offer a glimpse into its past.

It’s easy to take day trips to popular beaches like Patong, Kata, or Karon or explore the natural beauty of places like the Big Buddha.

Staying in Phuket Town offers a more authentic and laid-back experience compared to some of the more touristy areas. You can enjoy a slower pace of life and interact with locals, who are friendly and welcoming. There are plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants to check out, and you’ll find a range of cuisines to try.

Lastly, staying in Phuket Old Town is generally more budget-friendly than other areas of the island. Plus, the fact that I really enjoyed staying in Phuket Old Town, I’d say it’s definitely worth it, but only for a few days, don’t plan your whole holiday there.

Is Phuket Old Town Safe For Tourists?

For me, my experience in Phuket old town was nothing but enjoyable. I didn’t feel unsafe at any time and found the locals to be friendly and welcoming.

That said, I always recommend following your safety strategies. There are certain precautions you should take while travelling no matter where you go. Practice safe travelling by:

  • Itโ€™s important to remain vigilant.
  • Never leave valuables lying around.
  • Keep an eye on your surroundings.
  • Avoid political protest and unrest.
  • Donโ€™t attract attention; this includes wearing expensive jewellery, flaunting cash and becoming too intoxicated.

Phuket Town is generally considered a safe place to visit. However, petty theft, such as pickpocketing, does occur in crowded areas, so keep your valuables close to you and avoid carrying large sums of cash.

Bonus tip >> It’s also recommended only to use registered taxis or reputable transportation services to avoid scams or unsafe situations.
