Where To Stay In Ayutthaya: By Budget

Did you know that Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siam Kingdom for over 400 years? With its centre built on an island, many of the best places to stay in Ayutthaya are located there. However, there are many incredible hotels off the island, too.

It’s an awesome place, filled with museums, archaeological sites and enough ancient temples and ruins to amuse any history buff. It’s a place of history, ancestry, and fascinating heritage, so much so that it’s been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

To begin with, I’m going to run through the most affordable budget hotel options in Ayutthaya. Even though the city is usually missed from the standard backpacking itinerary, this doesn’t mean there aren’t any hostels. 

Luckily, the city is packed with hostels and budget hotels. Here are the best affordable places to stay in Ayutthaya.

The Best Hostels and Guesthouses

Plus Hostel Ayutthaya: Beds

The guests love Plus Hostel Ayutthaya and complement the breakfast and dinner, bike rentals, and clean accommodations. The staff is said to be welcoming and always willing to help.

There is nothing much to dislike about the hostel, although it’s located a bit far from the city centre, it can be easily navigated using the available bicycles.

It sounds like this hostel is a fantastic place to stay, with a homey atmosphere, a beautiful garden, and friendly hosts. While the beds are a bit hard, the overall experience is highly recommended.

11:11 Hostel: Beds

Based on the reviews, it sounds like 11:11 Hostel is a great option for those of you who are looking for a clean, comfortable and friendly stay. The staff is very helpful and always willing to provide recommendations. 

It might be cheaper because of its location, although, on the main island, it’s on the opposite end of the main Historical Park. 

That said, the hostel has a lovely view of the river and the breakfasts, although basic, are delicious. Some guests did mention that the breakfast could have more variety and that the mattresses were very firm. 

However, guests strongly recommend this hostel for its cleanliness, comfort, and friendly staff.

Early Bird Hostel Ayutthaya: Beds

Early Bird Hostel Ayutthaya seems a great option for those of you looking for a clean, comfortable, and centrally located stay. Guests really appreciated the helpful and friendly staff, the outdoor sitting area, and the bike rental option. 

The beds are comfortable and spacious, with curtains that provide privacy in shared dorms. Some guests did mention that there were only two toilets and showers for those in dorms and that the shower drains could get blocked.

Other minor issues mentioned were the lack of charging points outside in the communal area, the presence of mosquitoes, and the absence of hooks in the dorm for wet towels. 

However, guests strongly recommend this hostel for its great value for money, perfect location, and attentive staff!

Budget Hotel Suggestions

Zleepinezz Hostel: Double Beds

When we visited Ayutthaya, we stayed at this incredible hostel. The location is perfect, right in front of two temples. The staff is beyond nice, and the lady at the reception spoke great English and gave us so many tips and options for what to see and do in Ayutthaya.

The breakfast is absolutely amazing, with so many tasty options to choose from, including local porridge (congee), fresh doughy yum yum, eggs, bread, jam, fruit, and tea/coffee available all day long! 

The room we had at Zleepinezz Hostel was good and clean, and the bed was comfortable. The only downside was that our bathroom was located outside the room, but it was clean, and the shower was nice. Bike rental is available for only 50 baht per day. 

Overall, we would highly recommend this hostel. The staff were absolute gems, friendly, bubbly, and extremely helpful! The position of this hostel is awesome too, the only thing we didn’t like was the noise from the street at night, but it was not the hostel’s fault.

Momento House: Double Beds

Based on the reviews, it seems like Momento House is a fab place to stay. The staff is very nice and helpful, the breakfast is good, and the location is suitable for sightseeing the temples. 

The hotel is also very clean and has a nice design. The upstairs lounge area is a nice touch, and the rooms are spacious. The staff is accommodating and even offered to give some guests a ride to landmarks. 

However, there are a few downsides to note. The Wi-Fi can be poor, and the location is on the opposite side of the island from the temples. Additionally, bike rentals are not available at the hotel, and the restaurants around the hotel are not the best. 

Finally, guests should be mindful of the stray dogs on the street where the hotel is located, although not the hotel’s fault. Overall, the hotel does come highly reviewed and seems to be a good choice for travellers looking for a clean, budget-friendly place to stay in Ayutthaya.

Mid-Range Hotel Options In Ayutthaya

WHERE TO STAY IN AYUTTHAYA? Section 2 is for the everyday traveller!

If you’re not keen on staying in budget accommodation, this is the section for you! At a typical hotel in Ayutthaya, Thailand, you’ll be looking to pay around £50 / $61 to £100 / $121 per night. There are some nice places available in this price range, which I’ve narrowed down to seven awesome hotels.

Standard Hotel Accommodation

Baan Tye Wang Guesthouse: Double Beds

If you’re wondering where to stay in Ayutthaya, this family-run hotel is a magic and super charming option. The guests are saying the friendly staff, relaxed environment, and beautiful Thai-style ambience make it a perfect oasis for peace and relaxation. 

The grounds are peaceful and beautiful, with lovely greenery, and the location is central and near temples and museums. The breakfast options at Baan Tye Wang Guesthouse are excellent and tasty, and the outdoor shower is a lovely touch. 

One guest did note there were more than the normal amount of mosquitoes around due to the plants and canal, so bringing some repellent can help. 

Limited parking and the location being a little too far from downtown may be downsides, but using bicycles or a grab can solve those issues easily. Overall, guests agree that it’s a beautiful and relaxing place to stay.

Krodyle Mindfulness House: Double Bed

The guests agree that Krodyle Mindfulness House is a lovely and peaceful place to stay. The host is very welcoming and helpful, making them feel at home from the moment they arrive. The breakfast was amazing, especially the Thai porridge – Congee. 

They also loved the peaceful vibe and how clean the hotel was. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the free bikes were a great way to tour the ruins. 

It sounds like the hotel is very well-managed, with a nice garden and a large public area to chill. Although there is no TV, the rooms are extremely clean, and the owners are very friendly. However, some guests mentioned that the shower water was weak. 

Overall, this is a beautiful and contemporary building, and guests loved everything about the hotel.

Phuttal Residence: Double Beds

Looking for the perfect place to stay in Ayutthaya? Look no further than this charming and beautifully decorated guesthouse near the river in a tranquil garden setting. 

Guests raved about the friendly staff, exceptional service, and delicious breakfasts in the garden at Phuttal Residence. While some mentioned that the location was a bit far from markets and restaurants, others enjoyed the peacefulness of being away from the city centre. 

There were a few minor dislikes, such as a weak shower and a slightly uncomfortable mattress, but overall, the reviews were overwhelmingly positive.

This one looks really nice, and guests agree that Baan Veanglhek Residence is a hidden gem in Ayutthaya, with beautiful river views, lush gardens, and comfortable rooms that combine traditional Thai style with modern amenities. 

The staff is attentive and helpful, and the cafe serves a delicious breakfast with river views. Although there were some dislikes, such as a clogged shower drain, limited access to the sitting areas by the river, and some confusion with the set breakfast, overall, this hotel offers an authentic and tranquil stay in Ayutthaya.

Baan Thai House: Deuluxe Villa

Overall, the reviewers had a very positive experience at Baan Thai House. They loved the beautiful, relaxing environment, the comfortable rooms with character, and the friendly and helpful staff. 

The grounds, gardens, and swimming pool were particularly enjoyable. However, some guests noted that the location is a bit far from the city centre and historic sites and that improvements could be made to the breakfast and lunch menus. So this might be something you want to keep in mind if you’re making a booking.

A few reviewers also mentioned minor issues, such as a basic toilet and a lack of hand soap at the sink. Nonetheless, you are getting a whole villa for a very good price! Since most reviewers were very pleased with their stay and would recommend the hotel to others, it makes my list!

The hotel is a traditional teak building with spacious rooms, pretty gardens, and nearby access to temples and riverside restaurants. The staff is friendly and incredibly helpful, making guests feel at home. The hotel also offers bicycle hire, allowing guests to explore the surrounding area easily. 

The only downside is that the wifi connection can sometimes be weak. Overall, the hotel is good value and a charming option for a stay in Ayutthaya.

The stunning view from the hotel pool is worth the stay alone, and there are several nice restaurants around the resort. Although some guests mentioned minor issues, such as the location on a busy street, a lack of natural light in the rooms, and some maintenance issues with the bikes, the overall experience was fantastic. 

The staff were wonderful, and the temple and river views were lovely. The included breakfast was exceptional, and the luxurious room and facilities were amazing. Highly recommended!

Baan Pomphet: Deluxe Double Room

I’ve read some amazing reviews about Baan Pomphet! The guests agree that the breakfast is absolutely delicious, and many recommend having dinner at the hotel as well. 

The hotel is conveniently located near the historical park, and the architecture and atmosphere are beautiful and embedded in the historical theme. 

The staff are very friendly and provide excellent service, and the rooms are comfortable and spacious with gorgeous views of the river. 

Some guests did mention minor issues such as mosquitoes at dusk and a loud AC, but overall, the hotel seems to be a perfect choice for where to stay in Ayutthaya.

One Dhatu Ayutthaya: Junior Suite

It seems like this is a new hotel as there aren’t many reviews, but it is receiving high ratings from its few reviews. It also seems like a really good price for location and style. 

The rooms at One Dhatu Ayutthaya are spotless, and the location is fantastic, with temples visible from the windows. The staff is exceptional, and the host is said to be lovely and accommodating. 

Breakfast is included, which is a bonus. The only minor issue mentioned was that access to the upstairs can be a little tricky. 

Overall, this hotel seems like a great option for those looking for a new and clean place to stay with excellent staff in a fantastic location in Ayutthaya!

Super Luxury

Sala Ayutthaya: Suite with Private Pool

Based on the reviews, Sala Ayutthaya seems to be a great option for those looking for a place to stay in Ayutthaya with a higher budget. The hotel’s design, comfortable and clean rooms, excellent location by the river and temples, and stunning views are praised by guests. 

The rooftop bar was also highlighted for its cosy atmosphere and beautiful views. Alongside stunning scenery, guests also appreciated the friendly and polite staff and the amazing breakfast.

However, some of the guests have noted the food and service charges being overpriced. One guest mentioned that the pool did not meet their expectations and that the bathroom doors were not fully closed, but I don’t think this is a major issue. The hotel also charges for bottled water, which is usually free in luxury hotels. 

Despite these minor issues, the overall consensus from the reviews is that this hotel is a good choice for those looking for a luxury, comfortable and convenient place to stay in Ayutthaya.

Cattani’s Riverside Home: Villa with River View

If you’re looking for a peaceful and comfortable place to stay in Ayutthaya, you might want to consider Cattani’s Riverside Home. This boutique resort offers beautifully maintained bungalows set in lush gardens, right on the Chao Phraya River. 

Note: It is rather far from Ayutthaya Island as it is about a 15-minute drive to the centre, but this adds to its charm!

Guests rave about the warm welcome they receive from the owner, Nana, and her staff, who go above and beyond to make their stay comfortable and memorable. It seems that guests really enjoyed their stay at this hotel. 

Visitors also appreciated the peaceful and private location of the hotel, which is set by the river. The breakfast is delicious, and the homemade food and drinks are a testament to the care and attention to detail the owners put into every resort aspect.

However, some guests mentioned that Cattani’s Riverside Home is not located near the city centre, which could be a downside for those who want to be close to the attractions. 

Additionally, some guests noted that there is no pool on the property, which may be a downside for those looking to cool down after a day of sightseeing. 

Nevertheless, the hotel looks stunning in a tranquil setting and since you know its location before booking this shouldn’t be a problem. Overall, it seems to have received very positive feedback from its guests!

Top Places To Stay in Ayutthaya, Thailand: For A Month Or More

Are you looking to visit Ayutthaya for longer than a few days? Maybe you’re heading there on a research trip; after all, it’s a great place to learn about the history of Thailand! 

If you plan on staying longer, you’ll need a bit more space than just a room, ideally a kitchen at least!

Chomnok Couple

“Chomnok Couple” is a unique and private space located on top of a wooden house with a queen-sized bedroom, bathroom, and living terrace that offers breathtaking panoramic views. 

The stairs to access the private floor are steep, so guests should consider their physical ability. Kayaking for 1 km to see elephants bathing and cycling for 5 km to the Ancient city are popular activities. 

The common area downstairs is available for guests and includes a kitchen, dining terrace, bathroom, laundry washer, and a wooden skywalk leading to the treehouse.

Athithara Ayutthaya

This authentic Thai teak house was built in 2014 and offers a peaceful atmosphere by the Chaopraya River close to the city centre. I have listed it above under “budget villas”, but it doubles as a good long-term rental.

You’ll be able to enjoy the garden and wide area basement for activities at Athithara and the riverside path. The room includes a balcony, a private bathroom, and cable TV, and breakfast is provided, plus a basic kitchen.

However, noise from neighbours, boats, and wildlife, such as birds and roosters, may be an issue for light sleepers. Free Wi-Fi and parking are also available, which makes it a great option!

The Best Locations To Stay In Thailand

There are our favourite places that we visited while we visited Thailand. If you’re heading on a backpacking trip or fancy exploring more of the country, these are great places to check out!

Phuket Town

One of the places we ended up spending longer than planned was Phuket. Originally, we went there for seven days, but Jack caught COVID-19, so we had to quarantine. In the end, we stayed just shy of 3 weeks in Phuket. 

Head out of the touristy areas, like Patong, and places like Phuket Town become really great places to visit. The town is steeped in history, Sino-Portuguese architecture, quirky cafes, and delicious street food markets. Discover the best hotels in Phuket for your stay here!

Koh Mook Island

Koh Mook was my favourite destination in Thailand. It’s located in the south Trang district and can only be accessed by boat. There are no cars on the island except the odd tuk-tuk, and it’s filled with friendly Thai and local culture. 

The island is still relatively new to tourism, with only a handful of shops and restaurants on the main street. It’s the perfect place to disappear and get some much-needed downtime. Disconnect, switch off and enjoy nature by the sea!

Kanchanaburi

Likely Jack’s favourite place, Kanchanaburi, is steeped in history – almost as much as Ayutthaya! It’s a big city with a terrible past, but this is what makes it an eye-opening experience and a must-visit destination in Thailand. 

It is a memorable place full of museums, monuments and memorials to all those who lost their lives. It’s where you’ll find the story behind the infamous Death Railway and Hell Fire Pass.

The good thing is that with all the sadness that shrouds Kanchanaburi, it’s also very close to two national parks: Yai Sok and Erawan National Parks. The latter has one of Thailand’s most stunning multi-tiered waterfalls!

Chiang Mai

Internationally known as the digital hub for nomads and remote workers, Chiang Mai offers a great experience. It’s somewhere we both enjoyed and found ourselves wanting to stay longer. It’s a large hippie city, surrounded by other smaller laidback towns such as Pai, which make for great day trips…

If you want to see elephants in Thailand, Chiang Mai is the place to go. It’s a place to relax and grab a coffee while wandering down narrow streets, immersing yourself in Thai culture. It’s full of intricate temples, traditional market stalls and delicious food stalls to make your inner foodie smile.

Khao Sok National Park

Another place I can’t rave about enough is Khao Sok National Park. Jack and I visited this national park on an overnight tour while we stayed on the famous floating bungalows. This was an awesome experience where we stayed on the lake in, well, you guessed it, little bamboo huts floating on the water.

We went on rainforest hikes, explored deep into caves (this was epic), learned about the park’s history, and made jewellery with a local.

Is Ayutthaya, Thailand Safe For Tourists?

Ayutthaya is generally considered safe for tourists. Like any other tourist destination, there is always some level of risk, but as long as you exercise common sense and take necessary precautions, you’re going to have a safe and enjoyable trip.

That said, It’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas or on public transportation. I’d also make sure to avoid any political demonstrations or protests!

Overall, Ayutthaya is a popular tourist destination, and the local authorities take security seriously. They work hard to ensure the safety of visitors, and because of this, the town has a low crime rate.

Here are some essential safety tips and travel tips for visiting Ayutthaya:

• Keep your valuables secure: Just like any other tourist spot, Ayutthaya has its fair share of pickpockets and thieves. So, it’s always better to be cautious and keep your valuables safe. Try not to carry too much cash around with you, as this can make you an easy target

• Dress appropriately: It’s important to dress appropriately as a sign of respect. You’ll need to cover your shoulders and knees, particularly when visiting temples or other religious sites. So, make sure to pack some suitable clothing that will keep you covered.

• Use reputable transportation providers: To stay safe, use legitimate taxis, tuk-tuks, and motorcycle taxis.

• Be aware of scams: Tourist areas often have scammers, so watching out for common scams is essential. For example, be wary of tuk-tuk drivers who take you to shops or restaurants where they get a commission. Stay alert, and don’t fall for these tactics.

• Stay hydrated: Thailand can be hot and humid, so make sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
