Safari Transfer From Ella To Ahangama via Udawalawe or Yala
If you want to turn the journey from Ella to Ahangama into more than just a travel day, a safari transfer is easily one of the most memorable options.
Instead of taking the local bus all the way to the south coast, you can leave Ella early, visit either Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park, and then continue on to Ahangama afterwards.ย
Itโs definitely not the cheapest way to travel, but it works really well if youโre short on time and want to squeeze a safari into your Sri Lanka itinerary without staying overnight near one of the national parks.
This is the option I personally chose, travelling from Ella to Udawalawe before continuing down to Ahangama.ย
I left Ella at 4 am, joined the safari from roughly 6 am until 10 am, and arrived in Ahangama at about 1 pm.
Arriving that early meant I still had time for lunch, a wander and a gentle first afternoon by the coast. If youโre following a similar route, my 4 days in Ahangama itinerary shows how Iโd structure your time once you get there.
For me, this made the journey feel so much more worthwhile. I got to spend the morning spotting elephants, crocodiles and birds instead of just sitting on buses all day.

Udawalawe or Yala: which safari transfer should you choose?
There are usually two main safari transfer routes to consider:
Udawalawe safari transfer
This is a great choice if seeing elephants is your main priority. Udawalawe is well known for elephant sightings, and it felt like a natural stop between Ella and the south coast.ย

Yala safari transfer
Yala is better known for its leopard sightings, although wildlife is never guaranteed. Itโs one of Sri Lankaโs most famous national parks, so it can feel busier and more popular than Udawalawe.

My take
If your budget allows, I think the safari transfer is one of the best ways to travel from Ella to Ahangama. It saves you from dealing with multiple bus changes, gets you to the south coast by the afternoon, and turns an otherwise ordinary transfer into a proper Sri Lanka experience.
๐ My personal pick: Safari transfer via Udawalawe. This is the option I chose. It was more expensive than taking the bus, but it meant I could fit in a morning safari and still arrive in Ahangama by early afternoon.
Bus From Ella To Ahangama via Bandarawela and Matara
The local bus is the cheapest way to get from Ella to Ahangama, but itโs also the option that needs the most patience.ย
This is the one for you if youโre travelling on a tight budget, donโt mind changing buses and are happy to let the day unfold in that classic Sri Lanka public transport kind of way.
The main route to know is the #31 bus, which runs between Bandarawela and Matara, passing through Ella, Wellawaya, Tanamalwila, Hambantota and Tangalle on the way.ย
This is the route I initially thought to take before I discovered the Safari transfer. For Ahangama, the easiest way to plan the journey is usually:
Ella / Bandarawela to Matara to Ahangama
From Matara, you can continue along the coast towards Mirissa, Weligama and Ahangama by local bus.ย
This also works if youโre heading towards other south coast stops like Hiriketiya Beach or Dickwella Bay Beach, especially if youโre building a slower beach-hopping route rather than going straight to Ahangama.
Some services leaving from the highlands can sometimes continue further than Matara, but I wouldnโt build your whole plan around that unless you confirm it locally on the day.ย
The more reliable mindset is to get yourself to Matara first, then hop on a coastal bus towards Ahangama. The buses are fun: colourful, noisy and a Sri Lankan rite of passage.
Should you board the bus in Ella or Bandarawela?
You can board the #31 bus from Ella, but because itโs already passing through, thereโs no guarantee youโll get a seat.ย
If youโre travelling in high season or carrying a big backpack, it may be worth going to Bandarawela bus station first.
Bandarawela is a larger town with a proper bus station, so youโll usually have a better chance of getting a seat there than if you wait at the roadside bus stop in Ella.
How to get from Ella to Bandarawela
If you decide to start the bus journey from Bandarawela, youโve got a few options:
Tuk-tuk or taxi
This is probably the easiest choice, especially if you have luggage. Ask your accommodation in Ella to help arrange on the day before, and leave early so you donโt miss the bus youโre aiming for.
Train
You can also take the train from Ella to Bandarawela. Itโs a short journey, usually around 30 minutes, and there are several morning and afternoon train options between the two towns.ย
The downside is that youโll still need to get from Bandarawela train station to the bus station, so it adds another little layer of faff โ but itโs only 400m, so you can walk it.
Local bus
You may also be able to take a local bus from Ella towards Bandarawela, but if the whole point is to improve your chances of getting a seat on the long-distance bus, Iโd personally keep it simple and take a tuk-tuk or train.

What I think
If youโre trying to keep costs low, the bus is the obvious choice. Itโs not the smoothest way to get from Ella to Ahangama, but it does the job and keeps your Sri Lanka budget nicely under control.
That said, Iโd only choose this option if I wasnโt in a rush and didnโt mind giving up most of the day to travel (but youโll still get to the south coast in time for sunset).
If youโre already feeling tired, carrying bulky bags or just want to arrive on the south coast without wrangling multiple bus changes, the shuttle or private taxi will be a much easier option.
Pro tip: If youโre set on taking the bus, ask your guesthouse for the latest advice the day before. Sri Lanka bus routes are one of those things where the internet helps, but the locals know more than anything online โ and never expect them to be on time.
Shared Shuttle From Ella To Ahangama
The shared shuttle is the best middle-ground option if you want to get from Ella to Ahangama without spending most of the day on local buses.
It costs more than public transport, but itโs much easier.ย
You book your seat in advance, turn up at the arranged pick-up point, and travel directly towards Ahangama without needing to piece the journey together yourself.ย
Research note: 12GoAsia (a transport booking platform I use regularly) currently lists a shuttle from Ella to Ahangama, with departures at:
- 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm.ย
- The listed journey time is around 3 hoursย
- And arrives at 11:30 am, 3:30 pm or 8:30 pmย
- At the time of checking, the price shown was around $80 per person
Why choose the shuttle over the bus?
The main benefit is simplicity.ย
With the local bus, youโll likely need to think about whether to board in Ella or Bandarawela, then change in Matara, then catch another coastal bus towards Ahangama.ย
The shuttle is better if you want to keep the day moving, arrive in Ahangama faster, and avoid having to work out local connections.

If I didnโt want to do the safari transfer, this would probably be the option Iโd look at next. It gives you a much smoother journey than the local bus, but without paying for a full private taxi.
For me, the shuttle makes the most sense for not turning the journey into a public transport mission. Itโs not the cheapest route, but itโs a strong option if your time, energy and sanity are worth a little extra.

Private Taxi From Ella To Ahangama
A private taxi is going to be the easiest and most comfortable way to get from Ella to Ahangama.ย
However, itโs definitely not the cheapest option. Instead, itโs the most straightforward: door-to-door pick-up, space for your luggage, air-conditioning, and no need to change vehicles.
This is an excellent choice if youโre travelling in a group or youโve simply reached the point in your Sri Lanka trip where the idea of dragging your backpack between bus stands makes your soul quietly leave your body.
Itโs also handy if youโre heading straight to your accommodation with luggage. I stayed in a couple of different spots in Ahangama, including Mellow Hostel and 7BD Surf House, which both worked well for different reasons.

Good to know
The journey from Ella to Ahangama is roughly 185โ190 km by road and usually takes around 3 to 4 hours.
I noticed some taxi companies list the route at around 3 hours, but Iโd always leave a little buffer, especially if youโre travelling later in the day or need to check in somewhere at a specific time.
How much does a private taxi cost?
Private taxi prices can vary quite a lot depending on who you book with, the size of the car and whether you arrange it locally or book online in advance.
As a rough guide, Ella Budget Taxi lists Ella to Ahangama from around:
- LKR 17,000 small car = about ยฃ39
- LKR 18,000 large car = about ยฃ41
- LKR 27,000 van = about ยฃ62
Online transfer platforms will be more expensive.
That said, I do think thereโs something reassuring about booking a private transfer online before you travel, especially if you want everything sorted before leaving home.
One thing to check carefully is the mileage included in the price. Some services include a set number of kilometres, then charge a small extra fee after that.ย
For example, the transfer I would use includes up to 160 km, with an additional charge of $0.45 per extra kilometre. As Ella to Ahangama is roughly 190 km, that would add around 30 km extra, which works out at about $13.50 on top of the listed price.
